One of the most common symptoms of a poorly functioning water softener is when the water level in the brine tank is too high. My water softener stopped working after 6 months. It filled with water and didn't drain. Heres how I fixed it.
In my case, the siphon valve was plugged with debris.

Btw, for that cracked drain hose; cut the hose, then heat it with a hair dryer or lighter. It will slide on easily and not crack.

Do you know if the Brine Tubing can be replaced independent of replacing the entire brine valve & float assembly? If, so any tips on how to remove the old and replace with the new? Asking because they sell the tubing only, but when I tug on the tubing at the top of the float assembly it doesn't act like it wants to come out of the pipe adjacent to the float.

Thank you very much. My brine tank holds about 3-5 gallons after it completes the cycle. Your video helped me understand the moving parts and how to troubleshoot it. My system is different than yours but I am confident the functioning is very similar since I recognized many of the components.
@PilotJon
@PilotJon 4 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped! Thats cool- I know some of the more advanced systems will pre soak the salt so the brine is ready for the cycle. so yours may do that.. Mine is the cheapest one out there so the cycle is slower because it starts with filling the tank- where yours may end with filling the tank?

Great video, mine backed up overnight during recharge, sure enough pulled float assembly out, o ring was broke from sediment caked in fitting, and screen was clogged. I soaked everything in vinegar rinsed everything in hot water, put a new o ring on, emptied tank, cleaned valve on top, re-generated and problem solved, thanks much appreciated for your video. I do want to add, I found the small cone shaped screen completely clogged. I recommend taking venturi completely apart and soak in some clr.

ADDITIONAL TIP: The valve assembly that you worked on (where the hose from the float valve in the tank is connected to) also comes apart. There is a screen filter in there that you will want to check and be sure it's clear. This cap should be hand tight, so some good twisting by hand should loosen it (put about the same amount of torque when re-assembling). Careful when you do, there are several small components/gaskets/seals in this value so don't lose them & know how it all fits together again. Pretty self explanatory when you pull it apart - clean any debris from the screen and make sure everything looks in good shape and put it back together. Your owners manual probably has a diagram of the entire valve assembly in the appendix to reference.

Thank you for this! I can't get my bypass to close and when i push on it, a little water beads out so I'm at do or die time and found your video. Found the hose for the siphon valve totally hanging out of it. I jammed it back in and put it in the recharge mode. Stuck my garage camera on it, marked the water level and now I can watch it slowly go down from the comfort of my ac! I'll comment again if something else happens. Guess I need to go buy a new hose, could have been worse!

You need to put cleaner in the system every 3/4 months, that is supposed to take care of this type of issue. The valve you cleaned is the venturi valve (also needs to be cleaned periodically, every six months) and yes the venturi valve puts water in the brine tank and then reverses to pull it out to send it to the resin tank for treatment... it's a two way valve and cycles back and forth. If it's clogged, your system won't work as you found out. All of this is in the owner's manual. If you don't have one for your system you can probably find one online. Thanks for the video.

I'm curious what the cleaner is "cleaning." If it's dissolving salt residue, that's a design flaw, and if so, the mfg is very shrewd to turn a design defect into an income source, making customers buy their cleaner...

Hey Jon, I have the same issue. When you took that Venturi piece off and notice it’s blocked with sediment how did you clear it? I blew into mine and it had resistance but water and eventually air came out(barely). It was just difficult to do. Wondering if I should soak it in clr? I’m running a regeneration and will see if that took care of the issue.

Steve Wojtowycz sorry to hear you’re having to deal with it! But this is common- that’s why the process is kind of easy. You can use warm to hot water, CLR or Zep (similar time CLR) they should all work fine. Just make it a regular thing- 6 months or so and you won’t have problems! Thanks for watching and your input!

On that drain tube, try heating it with a hair dryer or heat gun (gently) and then see if you have something like a phillips Scredriver that is about the same diameter as the fitting and push it in to help enlarge it. You can also try heating and putting it straight on. By heating it you should help to relax it and hopefully keep from splitting on you again. It almost looked to me in the vid around the 10:30 mark that the tubing has cracks forming again.

Whirlpool WHES40 Water Softener: Yea so I'm going continue the saga right here for some to see. I purchased some silicone lubricant, (plumbers grease), pulled the bypass assembly out, cleaned the ends and inside, re-lubricated the o-rings as expected on this brand new Whirlpool Water Softener. Still leaked. Swapped the o-rings left to right and re-lubed again. Still leaked same side. Called customer service and a nice guy named Daniel said that he would send out a new bypass assembly with the necessary clips and o-rings included. He said that some of the specs were a little bit off sometimes on these bypass assemblies. So now we're down to making "lemonade", it seems, out of "lemons". Now IF the specs are right on the bypass replacement but somehow not on the receiving end......you know where this will go!

I am in the process now of replacing my water softener a part at a time. Had mine flood, checked for blockage and found none, replaced the switch that signals the motherboard (wasnt the switch), replaced the motherboard because it was corroded that fixed my error 3 code but water softener still wasnt working. Finally found that the shaft of the rotor and disc in the valve assembly was snapped. Replaced that and it started working, here I am and its a little less than a month later and my water softener is full of water like yours. Im suspicious of either a blockage or the venturi valve now.

That sounds odd sorry you're having to deal with it. Is your softener in a humid area? Even without an error message I'd say to disassemble it and clean every part very well. Make sure your model isn't one that fills the brine tank after a recharge. If it is, that type works very best in a dry climate. Mine fills with water at the beginning of its recharge cycle. Let me know how things go?

During recharge, is it normal that there are about 5 buckets of water came out from the drain hose? Is there a way to set up the recharge every 3-4 days or have to do it manually?
@PilotJon
@PilotJon 3 жыл бұрын
David Tang that is normal- the water coming out is the brine being rinsed from the beads that attract the minerals causing hard water. Changing the recharge would not be helpful- you can set the timing to be when you’re asleep.. it is recharging based on water use ultimately- are you using a lot of water? (Large family?) this will cause it to need to recharge often

So using iron out things are better, but still over flow of water by 20 inches. I think i have to take it apart like you and check all this. The home builder made me waste so much salt, time and money on salt for 4 years by not installing it right. It was never not floating full of water even when it was a brand new house.

great question! did you add a gallon or so of water to begin with? it works off of a siphon system, if your brine tank is dry it wont work.

Did you add water at the end or it will do itself?

Sorry for the late reply.. it will do it itself after once cycle. But its helpful to add about a gallon.. (for this type anyway)

I'm sorry it's late at night I'm watching you it's you need to add more salt not to the top but you just need to add more salt and it'll clean all that water that's in there's not getting clean

204 days for the small amount of salt. That seams optimistic.

Mine too, like it's not draining the tank correctly. I fixed mine last year just cleaning out the venturi valve but this time I'm stumped. The rinse drains just fine, but draining the brine tank makes a squeaky noise and barley drains/stops draining before its finished. Dang water softners lol.

Just buy a box of junk Gunk I think it's gonk rust out and it's rust out and you put a cup to a gallon of water poured in the thing that you're pulling out of the thing it'll work it all clean it up and and you don't have to do nothing just put it in there and that stuff the rust Gunk or rust out it'll clean it out it'll just sit there and then it'll work and then once a year what in severs maybe twice a year just pour a gallon of that in there it's some in a powder you pour a cup of it in a gallon of water mix it around dissolve it and then just portrayed in there

Part of the problem is a low quality softner also the installation is terrible quality and totally against code. Did anyone notice the softner is blocking the waterheater element and thermostat access panel? This is what you get when you dont hire a professional and theres several other problems that this homeowner will slowly discover over several years. You dont know what you dont know.
