Take-Two's CEO recently hinted that Grand Theft Auto VI may go over the $70 price point when it launches next year. What will the game really cost when it goes on sale and what are the implications for pricing it at $80, $90, or even $100? Michael Pachter responds!

I fully admit that this is just my personal opinion and the aggregate truth could be vastly different, but... It's the perceived value of a price, not the inflation adjusted price that matters. As an example, the higher $70 price for games has changed how I buy them. I haven't payed $70 yet even though I routinely paid $60 in the past for top tier games. Also the higher price has made me far more critical of games. Returnal was a perfectly fine game, but it didn't seem worth the higher price tag. I never bought that game, and only got around to playing it when I paid some nominal fee for PS Extra for two months, and I played it through that. Overall the higher game price has made me pay less for games. It conditioned me to wait for a great sale. Once I get past the initial hype of a game at release, the drive to buy the game drops dramatically, and the higher price is enough to push me over that initial threshold. If I don't buy a game within a week or two after launch, it's no big deal to wait a year or two to pick it up. A great example is God of War Ragnarök, which should have been a day one purchase. I didn't and now it's out of sight, out of mind. I have an alert set to email me when it goes on sales, but beyond that, I honestly had to think a bit to come up with it as an example for a game I wanted to buy but didn't because of its higher price. So be careful of unintended consequences with raising a price. It could just train your audience to ignore the urgency to play your games at launch. Oh btw, my feeling that way has only been reinforced due to the fact that by the time I do get around to playing games, through bug fixes and updates the games are much better than they were are release. Looking at you Cyberpunk 2077.

I hear you. I’m the same way. I haven’t bought a $70, ever. I always wait for some kind of sale or discount. That or I’ll rent a game from my local library (PS5) and that works just fine. And, like you, I did buy $60 games somewhat routinely but at $70 plus tax I just can’t do it anymore. It’s very interesting from an economics analysis perspective in how our purchasing habits hit a threshold at $70 but at $60 we were somewhat more willing to spend. 🤔

So 50 million people have bought a PS5. You need to have bought a PS5 to play GTA6. If GTA6 wants to sell 100 million copies, they need to convince 50 million people to spend hundreds on products from Sony, Microsoft or Nvidia. Isn't there an opportunity there for capturing those hundreds the customer was willing to put up? I don't know, maybe they can make their own console. Or maybe only offer a cloud game with a subscription -- That way they can be everywhere and nobody can pirate a copy. Don't even need mtx if people are paying a subscription. You're predicting a level of success following the trajectory from GTA4 to 5, but they're already close to having captured the whole market. Even Fortnite only has 500 million registered accounts.

It is not even getting PC release which is poor. The whole been building the game for say 12 years is BS anyway the current consoles have been out 4 years dev kits was released on a year max before launch so its misleading. pirating games really isnt an issue anymore and has been backed by real data it nerve harmed media sales (The industry refuses to listen to unbiased facts) GTA online has big numbers and generates a lot of $$$ this is what Pac is getting at.

@@nicmonberg5974 making a game is more than just what dev kit you're using. loads and loads of pre-production work. not to mention they likely started building the game on last gen consoles first, then as time went by, problems arose and the scope evolved, they decided to push it to current gen. and the lack of a PC release sucks for PC players but is smart for Rockstar. they won't sell as many upfront but it's less work for them, gives them more time to polish, builds tons of desire for the PC version, then they get to basically relaunch the game with another marketing push later. they did it with GTA V and RDR2 and it's worked both times.

@@nicmonberg5974 I'm sure Microsoft and Sony would of given developers a good idea of expected specifications of the new console coming. Developers would make games based off what hardware is expected and then adjust as needed when dev kits are available.

Phantasy Star IV on Sega Genesis was $100 when it released back in the 90s. People forget that.

They could charge $80 and I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy it. And they know millions of people would do the same. I don't think they'll do it though. Also... there's not a chance in hell that Rockstar wastes ANY GTA 6 Online assets on the current GTA Online in the state it's in now. Nope.

Didn’t Pachter criticise Sony for being the first to raise game sales to $70 because inflation wasn’t that high and now he’s saying it would be ok for GTA6 to be $100 because inflation justifies it? 🤔

Rockstar is the most powerful game developer in the world. They pretty much dictate everything about GTA VI on their terms. Microsoft and Sony have no say whatsoever.

Pachter seems like a genuinely good dude, but he has major bad takes from time to time. A reminder that a certain level of success and wealth changes a person view. His movie theater take is baffling. Music, movies and games are cultural events and moments. This idea to price the average person out of seeing a movie day 1 to more successful people is pretty disgusting. I always recommend successful people look into the concept of survivorship bias. One of the grossest things very successful people believe is that they are entitled to their wealth because “they work hard,” like no one else does. The reality is that either they found wealth because their skill set aligned with what’s valuable at the moment or they sought what’s valuable because they weren’t tied down to some circumstance that kept them from doing so. Everyone works hard, money isn’t a sign of that. Let’s make sure everyone can participate in the things they are passionate about without the upper class getting more entitlements.

I agree. I like Pachter a lot, been watching him since GameTrailers, but he's way off on movies. The reason I don't go to the theater is because ticket prices are already too high for me to justify dealing with dirty screens, sound issues, and old, out of focus projectors. Now you have to get a literal subscription to the theater to make it at all a reasonable proposition. No thanks. Unless I really want to see a given movie on the big screen, I'll wait for home release. But I really, really miss when going to the movies used to be a fun, cheap way to spend the evening with friends. Didn't even matter what we were seeing. You just wanted to be at the movies. Not anymore. As for wealth, I've learned in my life that it all comes down to luck. You can be the most talented, skillful, driven person in the world with all the right qualities for success, everything going for you - but if you're not lucky to boot, it doesn't matter. Like many others, Pachter got lucky. That's not to say that he's not deserving of his success or anything of the sort, but he's just lucky that things have worked out for him. That's really all it is. You can absolutely be proud of the work you put in to create an opportunity to capitalize on that luck, but the moment you fool yourself into believing you aren't simply lucky is the moment you become an entitled arrogant rich person.
