I'm a retired general building contractor of 50 years... try to get all your on site dirt work done before you get to many things in the way... you need to be very aware of drainage especially during moon soon season.... and insulate your building now and go over board on the insulation....that building will get 140 degrees plus in the summer..if you have questions ask me I'm here to help.

Don't get scared off of solar. The tech is improving by leaps and bounds. Solar of 5 years ago is like a car in 1987 compared to a Tesla. The batteries will last you from 8-12 years so estimate 10 and by then new tech for batteries will be around that would be available for cheaper and be more efficient. Your solar panels will last well over 30 years and still produce at 80% of their stated output. Get solar and get a system that you can have a generator backup that kicks on automatically to charge your batteries if needed.

Morning! I came online to subscribed to another channel and saw you had uploaded a video! Love the new firepit area! Don't forget to reach out to Josh and Erin over at Wild Wonderful Off Grid. They have an amazing solar setup! You can shave thousands off your solar installation by doing some of the work yourselves. Here's my story: When I had purchase my home I didn't have much money to do the backyard irrigation. At the time I was a single mom of 3. However, the builder factored into the pricing of my home the price of installing irrigation in the front yard. I had/have this neighbor that felt it was okay for his blind dog to eliminate in my yard and forwent picking up the dog's feces. As he didn't want the dog to use the bathroom in his really nice landscaped backyard. So! He and I had some very bitter words later ending up with him turning me into the city for having weeds in my backyard. The city came out and gave me a warning. My new husband and I didn't have much money as I had used all my money to buy the house and he was paying child support. So, something happened and money became available. It wasn't much money but it was enough for me to do my backyard. My husband being an over the road truck driver wasn't home long enough to help me with the grunt work; therefore, the work that needed to be done fell on my shoulders and my 8 year old son. God sent someone by and they told me of this place name Smitty's. Smitty's sell and install irrigation systems. I was nervous and my words were stuck in my throat when I got to the business seeking help. Now, I'm about to cry! Because I will never forget God's hand in helping me get such an undertaking done. A woman came from the back and could tell I was lost, scared and confused as to what I needed to do the job of installing an irrigation system in my backyard. God, once again, sent another person to walk me through the process! I grabbed my 8 year old son and told him I would pay him $200 to dig the trenches! He dug most of the time and the other time he was searching for bugs and playing with insects. But he and I as a team got the job done. So! I went back to Smitty's and the guy said if I was uncomfortable tying into my existing system he would send someone out to connect the two for $500. $500 was like $5,000 to me, I needed every dime to landscape my backyard! So! I asked the guy to tell me how to connect the two systems. He did. And, I didn't learn what was needed because I had to go back a couple of times until I got what I needed to learn. Now! I'm a pro! I can install an irrigation system with little to no help other than having a plumber connect to the main water line. BUT I'M SURE I CAN DO THAT TOO! However, I can repair and replace things on my system with ease. I wrote all that to convey this, you can install your own solar panels with ease; however, because it deals with high voltage I suggest you hire someone to connect the system to your structure. Simona, with God standing by your side you and your husband got this! Those IBC totes you were talking about finding used for under $100, make sure they were used for food-stuffs (like syrup) and it's cleaned. I'd also even only say use those for water catchment you're going to use for non-drinking water (garden, doing dishes, etc.). You want new and not white for drinking water as the non-white tanks don't let light in to promote algea growth. I'd even say bury it at least partially to help keep it from freezing in the winter.

You should get the big water tank .Some get a big rain tank and use that to water their gardens and get another for drinking water.Some people have wells but they have water tanks so they can use for drinking water and washing and don't have to use their well water too much.

Suggest looking into a 12 volt or 24 volt pump that will be more efficient and compatible with your solar system. That way you do not have to run the 12v solar through a inverter to get 110v for a pump and loose efficiency.

From the picture you showed, the adirondack chairs were suppose to be within the paved area of the rectangle, not outside of the pebbled rectangle of the fire pit. I would have also put lights out there, bordering inside the pavers and outside circumference of the pavers so you can chase the coyotes away! Have you been out there at night? It must be pitch black out there! Will the home have a second floor, like an attic to store things or another living space? How many bathrooms do you plan to have? Is your husband a contractor? Yeah. Install water tank(s) until you can decide on where your water will come from. Carrying water bottles Everytime you go there is going to get old! Tuff terrain.

I love the look of the fire pit area but it’s going to be too hot to be usable in the summertime. When you wanna be outside. I live in Phoenix and there are times when near Kingman it’s hotter than down here. Also, the Adirondack (add-er-on-dack)chairs and picnic tables probably need to be sealed because the heat will dry them out and they’ll start looking terrible within a year. Also, one more thing to think about is insect control, there are scorpions and other creepy crawlies that bite in the desert and you are building on their homes. So they will be there and you’ll have to control them. I’m definitely hoping the best for you down here in Phoenix.😊

I just got my septic system in Louisiana and it was almost $7k, they are concrete tanks 500 gallons tank. Solar not that expensive it last for years. San Tan Solar in Phoenix, AZ. Fire pit is beautiful..

I don't know if you get enough wind out there to have a wind turbine but that might be something to look into if you go to batteries for your electricity. A well and a windmill to pump the water may also be something worth looking into. Don't know if either of those ideas are viable options but I figured that I would throw them out there anyway.

Please take advantage of the pitch roof on your building and check into water harvesting. When I heard your plans of all the fruit trees and possibly chickens, I knew you were not going to have water for that even with carrying it in. There are some gorgeous rain barrels on the market. You can bring gutters down and have a rain barrel at each corner, or just to each side of your building and you can connect rain barrels like a daisy chain.

Buying a used water tank is like buying used underwear from Goodwill, I don't recommend that. Simona and Big Bear, starting to realize why you don't have any neighbors, lol. Love what you guys want to do, and you seem really nice. I originally said that you were going to need a diesal generator. You can go the solar route, but you will be real, real sorry because it won't ever cover your needs. I strongly suggest you start looking at on line auctions for generators on wheels that municpalities, counties or the state are selling (hint, hint, HINT) or you could go with solar and waste your money. You could probably pick one up for 10k that will be overkill for your needs but will be thankful you got it when you need it to run a/c, water pumps, WHATEVER. How do you go back to Home Depot and not get a pick axe and sharp shooter? I like the fire pit, word to the wise, when removing the cover, be careful, you never know what may be under there. Story time. Been in Mohave county for all of maybe 3 days. Now, I knew I was being assigned to the OK corral, but I had no idea what I was in store for. So I am sitting in traffic in Bullhead City along were the airport is across from the Casino's. Back in those days they ran water taxi's from the Az side to the Nevada side (just a fun fact). It's "bike week" in Laughlin which means it's total chaos and partying on both sides of the river. While I am sitting there, just looking around taking in the sights, here comes Harley woman driving against traffic on the sidewalk, long hair flowing as she is literally doing like 60-70 mph down the sidewalk. I think to myself, wtf. Hot on her tail are 2 DPS troopers , ryding Kawasaki's in hot pursuit on the sidewalk. That's when it really sank in that my time there was gonig to be "fun filled and exciting". 😅🤣😂 Moral of the story, avoid the river during bike week and Lake Havasu during spring break, too much crazy going on that you don't want to be a part of. Sorry forgot one thing. You mentioned earlier you were seeing a lot of bee's. Where you live whould be a great place to keep bee's if one was so inclined (hint, hint, HINT) as they would serve 2 purposes. They would provide you with great honey first and foremost (growing up, my neighbor kept bee's and I can tell you, there is nothing better than fresh honeycomb right out of the hive, omg it's so good) and they are much easier to keep in Arizona than say in Ohio. Secondly, if you are keeping bee's, they will not be inclined to allow other bee colonies to move in so to speak.

As someone stated previously be very aware of the water drainage. Get the site tested. My in laws live on 40 acres in Arizona. They are off grid and self sufficient. They have been living on their property about 20 plus years now. They have 1 or 2 solar panels (not sure of the size) for energy, they also have a windmill to help generate energy, batteries and a generator for backup. They have a huge 2 story log home that my father in law built. They are great at growing their own vegetables and have some fruit they grow. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out. I can't wait till my guy and I can purchase our land and start to build on it & be self sufficient like my in laws are! I wish I could post a picture of their home here in the comments. Once you start living in your home & get all settled in I suggest getting 2 kittens or cats. It'll help with the mice and bugs. Start them off indoors until they adjust & know that is their home. Little bit at a time let them go outdoors. Just make sure you bring them in at night, you don't want the coyotes getting them. Love the fire pit set up. The pavers and black river rock make the color pop! We have those same chairs, my father in law made ours.

Lol yes ma'am. We had APS do an estimate for us on Snowflake. From our property to the nearest power source, they quoted us $420,000. We already planned on going off-grid, but considered power because we planned to have an Air BnB incorporated with our homestead. So, we'll eventually purchase water ranks and have water hauled until we can afford to ads a well, which was quoted between $35k-$50 will solar well pump, solar with battery back-ups and inverters. Vance from White Mountain Testing and Septic, installed our septic last year for around $10k. I am not sure about Kingman, but up north does get good winds. You guys did great with the tank estimates! 😃❤👏

You can never have too much water in the desert. Get two of those tanks if you can. Or build up to it.

Buying land in a better area with a high-water table is cheaper. Most of the desert land (Over 50 Acres) I have has a water depth between 6 feet and 300 feet maximum. Cheap land is not so affordable when you factor in long-term water needs, and with Arizona running short on water, you have an uphill battle that's going to get seriously real in 22 months. As far as water tanks go, you need between 5,000 and 10,000 gallons to cover your crops, trees, and personal living needs.

That guy trying to talk you out of solar is giving you partial truths. Yes, batteries are expensive and have to be replaced occasionally (like ever 10-15 years if you use lithium), but how many times do you think you'd have to replace those batteries in your lifetime compared to that $200k quote he gave you to run grid power to you? A LOT! Also, then you are not reliant on the grid power, which does fail occasionally, and be stuck for life paying the taxes that accompany your monthly electric bills.

I should also note that the batteries aren't dead after that 10-15 years. They are down to 80% capacity. That means you may be able to use them for other projects (like powering an electric gate or electric fence).

I see you've already put up your structure, but I'm confused how you plan to get water to the inside of the structure? Did you have drains installed under the slab before it was poured? Are there water supply pipes underground which lead to the sinks, tubs and showers? Is there conduit to run the electrical wires to the walls? Obviously electricity is needed to run refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners. For a house your size in a hot desert climate, you'll need very efficient insulation and a LOT of power to run everything. You'll not get away with strictly solar unless it's a HUGE bank of solar cells, with a LOT of batteries to back it up at night. Generally, these items are to be planned BEFORE putting up a structure. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but solving these problems AFTER the building is constructed can be very expensive. My advice is find a good general contractor and pay him or her a "consulting fee" to make this work. Good luck.

There’s other ways to get water, septic and electricity to your house. A well and septic are the most popular but not the only solution. Shop around or go buy a water tank, a pump, filtration system and run the pvc to your home and have someone deliver your water. Solar or generator. Good luck

I like the water toes because you can see what's in them just three of them to last for 2 or 3 months I've been off-grid in Texas for three year some state requirements are different some accept compost toilet and some places just do not bother you when you truly off grid. It's good to see someone of color doing it with rising rent prices I think more of us will come to this conclusion and live a self-reliant lifestyle can have everything there that you have in the city solar power is a man's best friend 🌄🦍❤️

Solar is good. These guys always say discouraging things about solar. It depends on what Solar products you use. Being that your new home is big. You will need 6 to 8 wall batteries backup. Also you can have wind Solar that will give you power all the time. Because of your location. As for your water 💧 look into a. AWG: Atmospheric Water Generator. Which creates water from the air. As long as there is a 60to65 humidity. Nothing is impossible. You guys are on the correct track. Also, with the solar, you will get a 35% government rebate. These are facts.

Hi Simona...I know in Africa most people who build their own homes use what they call a Borhole for their water system or what we call a water well...for those that can't afford them they use the Blackwater Tanks that you showed us...just some info

I like river rocks. I bought some American Heritage River Rocks. I have not been able to find them again. However, in the future, I will use black, white, beige, burgundy, etc. to separate different areas of our homestead. I like the black river rocks better than the mulch. Once you put builders' sand under the pavers, it will be awesome. You can also put solar panels on a powerwall. Maintenance might be easier. You still need the well house (doghouse) to cover the pump. Your cacti will be happy in the new planters.

I think your estimate is good. I was told just a septic system could be $15,000 - $20,000. So I'm definitely keeping that information. I will be sell my home this spring and looking for land in northern Az.❤

15k ish is a great price I have 2 500 gallon tanks, a white one for fresh water and a black one for black water. Once a Month I will dump a pint bottle of Pine Sol in the black water tank to eat the fecal matter and the sludge and break it down, and it's still safe to use on plants because it gets diluted, regular mix of Pine-Sol is 1/2 cup per gallon, there's 8 cups in a quarts so I'm putting 16 gallons worth of Pine Sol in a 500 gallon tank, You can't even tell there's anything in there.
