THAILAND MY LAND... RETIRING DISGRACEFULLY

Күн бұрын

A question I am often asked is how much do you need to retire or live in Thailand? Well, how long is a piece of string.? My answer is it depends on your budget and what you want to do with your life when you arrive here. I know people who through necessity live on next to nothing and others who live in mansions overlooking the Gulf of Thailand and drive Porches or Mercedes. This video is about what I consider the bare minimum to live a fairly good life in Thailand.

I am a retiree and though I love making these videos they obviously come at a cost to me as the cost of travel through the Land of Smiles when I make the videos takes a large chunk out of my pension. There are many “free” ways that would help me get recognised on KZbin, they include:
• If you like my videos on Thailand you can help me by pushing the subscribe button (which is at no cost to yourself).
• If you push “Like and Share” and leave a comment.
• If you watch the video content of my videos all of the way through until the end.
All of the above will give me more exposure and more viewing time on KZbin which then helps my rating on the KZbin site. I would appreciate your help so that I can continue to improve my videoing equipment to enable me to make more exciting videos for your enjoyment.

We rented a house for 3000B a month with 2 bedrooms living room and a big kitchen. with large patio and parking. the house was 15 minutes from pattaya. My lesson learned is to let the wife handle the price negotiation. My neighbor who is from England paid 9000B for the same house. the houses had the same owner, there are two prices in Thailand, a price for Thais and a price for foreigners

I will contact LUNA today to see if they can supply any information also. Could you give me some more info about your policy such as any deductible and the type of coverage that is included in your policy I will put this in the video also? There are a lot of retirees and ex-pats worried about the government bringing in the new 3 million baht health insurance mandate this year to qualify for a retirement visa. Many are looking to other countries to retire because of the costs involved so if there are cheaper options out there it would help them with their decisions on where to retire. I enjoy your videos Ged, but I do think you've missed the point here slightedly. Rather than ''How much do I need to live/retire in Thailand?'', the question should be ''How much do I need to live the life to which I aspire, in Thailand''? There's all sorts of crazy figures floated around, most of which mean nothing unless you are the one living that life at that time, for example I used to live in Cha Am, I don't smoke, I enjoy a beer now and again, I like western food (but don't have to have it), I like to get a massage every couple of weeks, I owned a scooter, my rentwas 6K month with electricity at govt rate. I like a nice beach side, laid back lifestyle and it cost me no more than 20K a month.....if I wanted to live in a fancy house, eat western all the time, hit the bars every night and pay for ''company'' most nights then, yeah, 40-60Ka month would be appropriate, but I didn't live like a pauper, I had a very nice comfortable life, and that's all I wanted.

Hi Ged, many thanks for compiling this estimate. Looks quite doable, except for the health insurance. I am almost the same age as you, but with a history of health problems (although I feel ok right now). So if I can get insurance it will be expensive. It may end up almost doubling your estimated overall budget. I think rental for me will be more like 15-20,000 baht a month, judging from the houses you showed (hope it is at the lower end). You are brave to ride a motorcycle, but it certainly is the cheapest option. I think even with health insurance it will be cheaper than the US (Medicare only covers part of one’s expenses and I was advised to budget $5000 a year for supplemental insurance). Of course it is free if one goes back to the UK, but that prospect fills me with dread. Anyhow thanks for the vlog as always, Colin

Regarding the houses to rent there are many bargains around at the moment but of course, these will go up when covid eventually goes. Few Asians even think about insurance. Live a good life free of insurance worry. Health insurance attracts ill health. A little pain here and there is a little of every day inconvenience. Just ignore it. A simple room is all your need. Close your eyes and go to sleep. Waking hours, go out to see the world and be among friends. Forget about luxury at home which actually is outside there. Food. Street food is delicious n so much cheaper. Why restaurants which charge not for the food but the rent?

If you look online at Facebook Marketplace or Baht&Sold and type in Hua Hin and then look for houses for rent you will see many. Whilst a budget of 30,000 baht is achievable, there is no way that most people would want to live that lifestyle, unless there is no choice. That is a budget to exist, it certainly isn't a budget to live a happy, relaxed and worry free retirement in Thailand. Take care.

Obviously the better your income the better lifestyle you can lead which is what I said in the video. But many people come to countries like Thailand because they have no investments or superannuation and live from pension day to pension day just surviving. It's not an ideal existences but at least the weather is better and because the cost of living here is cheaper here they can try to have a better life Cheers Ged

Hi Brian. I am glad that my video was helpful. The retirement visa is the best option, unfortunately. For tourist visas, you have to leave the country and cross the border into Cambodia, Laos or Malaysia to renew them every 60 days which is expensive and cumbersome. I have heard that some visa agents here can arrange to borrow the 800000 baht on the retiree's behalf and put it into the retiree's Thai bank account for the three months required with the retiree paying interest over the three months that the funds sit in their account. Once you get your retirement visa the 800000 is repaid and nine months later you do it over again. not an ideal situation but it may be something to think about. Cheers Ged

Very interesting video thank you , I’m 11 months away from retiring Thailand and the Philippines are my two choices (I’ve been leaning more towards Philippines the visa is slightly easier and you can stay up-to 3 years without leaving the country having said that I do plan on a retirement visa in either county, the costs you are quoting are around 15% less than similar in the Philippines I’m not quite sure why that is given the infrastructure of Thailand is way ahead of the Philippines and medical is certainly superior in Thailand?

If you go to the video description it has a link to the insurance company where you will be able to get a quote. I decided not to take out health insurance as it was very expensive for me as I am 70. It is still not mandatory to have health insurance if you apply for a retirement visa while being in Thailand, though I believe that if you apply for a retirement visa from within your own country it is a requirement for some reason. Hi thanks for your comment and input. No I didn't forget health insurance. Health insurance is still not compulsory here as yet and many people like myself find it better to pay for medical treatment when needed rather than take out expensive health insurance. Especially when you're 70 like me as the premiums are very expensive, more so since covid arrived in the country. It may come soon where you will have to take out medical insurance as part of the retirement visa process, but as of now it's not mandatory though I am expecting it to happen soon. The amount that I have put in the video is the minimum to live here and though many people live on that amount or less most people would want a more satisfying lifestyle living here and will spend more depending on their income and required lifestyle. Cheers Ged

Hi Nigel. You can apply for the retirement visa through the Thai Embassy in London. From what I understand if you apply this way you need to produce more information such as a police report and I was told that if you apply from the UK you also have to have health insurance. I have just renewed my retirement visa here in Hua Hin ( you can see the video of it in a few days) and I didn't need health insurance cover. So I think that it is easier applying from within Thailand but do your own research because they change their rules all of the time. Cheers Ged

Hi mate. I assume you mean 900 US dollars which is around 32,000 baht. It's doable and many people live on that or less. If you like to drink and socialise or like to travel around the country then it could be a problem. But if you just want a quiet life you can rent a room for about 5,000 baht a month or a nice condo for about 10 to 15 thousand baht. If you are coming here on a retirement visa you have to have 850,000 baht in your bank account at least three months before you apply for your visa every year or show proof of an overseas pension or a monthly income of 65,000 baht.

Prior to covid you had to leave the country after 90 days to renew your entry visa. The rules on entry visas for visiting Thailand have changed since then because it's hard to leave the country to go to another country such as Malaysia or Cambodia and then re enter Thailand. You would need to check with Thai immigration to see what they require now as they change their rules often. For a retirement visa the minimum age is 50 but there are other visa options if you have the funds such as the Elite Program. I hope that this helps Cheers Ged
