The description of cod loin ( and hence all fish loin) is as follows ... What is cod loin? Cod Loins are the Fillet Mignon prime cut of a cod fish. Cod tends to be a large fish and the fillet is often too big for a single portion. It is therefore possible to buy the cod loin, which is cut from the middle section or fattest part of the fillet. Hence your paying for the best part of a fillet and hence uts expensive.

My first thought was the Aldi Everyday Essentials Battered Fish Fillets at £2.35, also 500g. However, the Essentials fillet is Alaskan pollock, not haddock. These two products side by side would make an excellent comparison on taste. Ideally, a blind test so that you didn't know whether you were eating the Aldi pollock or the Iceland haddock. I've eaten about twelve of the pollock fillets since your review. I love them. I would not rush to buy the Iceland fillets at almost 3 quid more.

A bit of an update and comparison. I did a shop in Lidl earlier. They were doing 2 X Cod loins in batter for £4.49. They weighed in at 520gms, so quite a bit bigger. They also had chunky cod fillets X 4, but obviously not loin cuts, for the same price. So the Haddock fillets are bit of a bargain after all. I did buy some Salmon burgers and tried one in a bun, a bit of salad and a bit of tartare sauce. It was well tasty. My dear older sister would have a fainting spell if I told her I shopped at Lidl and Aldi. But I've been shopping with them for decades and very, very rarely have I been disappointed. I look at this way. A beef animal when slaughtered is sold on. Half of it may go to Waitrose and sold with a massive profit. The other half could go to Aldi and sold for a lesser profit. If their food is of a lower quality? Why do Lidl and Aldi get the top spots in the yearly store awards for their products?
@BaldFoodieGuy Жыл бұрын
Sounds good Gerry. We don't have a lidl sorry
@SuperLittleTyke Жыл бұрын
Both Aldi and Lidl are brilliant at providing good quality food at affordable prices. But this was not always the case. I can remember shopping in Aldi in Germany in the early 1970s when it was still called Albrecht. Back then the quality wasn't nearly as high as it is today. It was mainly just cheap. But both chains learned over the years that the only way to compete with the big boys like Tesco and Asda was to equal or surpass the quality while maintaining lower prices. They have achieved this, and Aldi and Lidl regularly receive awards. Result is that now the car parks are full of large BMWs and Range Rovers as even the well-off among us go there to shop.

The LOIN is from the middle, chunkiest part of the fish, and as such is always nicer to eat than a thinner piece taken from elsewhere on the fish. We have an excellent, award winning fishmonger locally, and these Iceland Battered Haddock Loins are considerably cheaper than buying Haddock loin from him and preparing them myself. They're also delicious, and so far, neither of us have found any bones! We would much rather pay for Haddock Loin Fillets from Iceland than cheap Pollock from anywhere else. We have already had them several times and don't agree that the batter is too thick, it's lovely crispy batter, and for me, it could be thicker as it's so nice! They're always going to be more expensive than thinner fillets, it's a case of 'you get what you pay for'. You're not going to get the same quality and flavour from cheap beef compared to fillet steak, and fish is much the same! When compared to fish from the 'chippy' they're very good value, you don't get served Haddock loin in chip shops! We cook ours in an air fryer, and serve them with either home made potato wedges or buttered mash and petits pois or mushy peas, depending on how we feel!

Cooking Recommendation: I was thinking, you like fish, so why not try really fresh fish to pan-fry at home? There's a fishmonger in Market Street, Ulverston who sells a wide variety of fresh fish and seafood. You could get a couple of plaice fillets, lightly dust them with flour and pan-fry in a little sunflower oil for about 2 minutes each side. It's dead easy. Just don't overcook it. Remember, the fish is still cooking a little after you've removed it from the heat. I guarantee you won't taste anything finer. I have recommended plaice, because the thickness is more even than cod or haddock, but you can experiment with other fish, even pollock.

Mostly white fish is sold from the tail end, especially in a chippie. The loin is the best part and the thickest of the fish. Also it is Haddock, which is dearer than Cod and as I said the loin is the best cut. It is like comparing a fillet steak to a frying steak. So yeah, there are cheaper versions out there, but of a lower quality. With the price of fish today? the price for almost 500gms is fair value. Nice review Mr G 👍👍👌 and "spot on", with some chips and mushy peas and this would be great. Have you ever thought of doing a chippie review of different fish? Huss, AKA Rock Salmon, is well underrated and is a lot cheaper than other white fish. It also has the benefit of having no bones, just cartilage which some chippies will cut out before frying. And yes I'm coming up to 70, but I have "Are you ready for this?" By 2 Unlimited on my Spotify playlist 🥰🥰😎🥰🥰.

Hi Gareth from Spain. That has to be the most expensive batter you've bought yet. Weight for weight, I'd love to know which was the greater quantity, fish or batter. No traffic lights, this time? Think you've deen done again.

Cheers pal, yes pretty expensive.

Yes a wee bit expensive Gaz but if it is of any consolation these would cost way more if a chippy sold these. May give these a go with just mushy peas, tartare sauce and lots of s&v.

£5.25! Don’t think I’ll be buying them anytime soon. Gareth, would’ve been interesting to see what the weight of the batter or fish alone came to?

The best ones are from Marks and Spencer. They do a chunky cod or haddock in batter or breadcrumbs. I won’t buy any others. They are the best. The cost of them is £7.50 for 4 but worth every penny.

The price is in the stratosphere now. If they were £3.25, that would have been great. They are turning the screw very tight, on our cash Gaz. Utter joy of a video Gaz.
