How much should you hinge your wrists in the golf swing?
I’ve been asked this question many times, and until recently, my answer has always been…
More wrist hinge if you want more distance…
Less wrist hinge if you need more control.
But with the help of some of the latest technology that’s available to us golf pros, I’ve come to a deeper understanding…
It took me a long time to figure this out, but today’s video is one that can help you gain distance AND control.

Zach, your instruction is always clear and helpful. I used to cock my wrists early -- and a lot -- and played well that way, but keeping the wrists quiet is unquestionably better for consistency. Quiet wrists also promote a wider swing with more of a one-piece takeaway -- and definitely forces the use of the big muscles to create power. Good lesson.

Thanks for this video Zach. I've been trying to find that balance between distance and accuracy via wrist hinge and this video really crystallized it for me. Those three players you mentioned, Watson, Daly and Mickelson, also struggled mightily with accuracy and control. When they were on they were as good (and long!) as anyone. But, when they weren't, they could spray it all over the course like us mere mortals.

Hi Zach; I'm really glad you made this video because I was going to comment on how wrist hinge, for me, really causes timing problems with where the hinge is released. I have an issue with mis-timing it & hitting it fat. I also noticed during your demonstration that when your wrists are hinged at the top, your left wrist is noticeably cupped leaving the clubface open which causes a slice or can even cause a shank. Nearly everyone else is stressing a lot of hinge for speed at impact & it's good to see someone going the opposite way & really simplifying things. Thanks for your videos.

As always, great instruction! I feel it’s best to focus on not hinging my right vs left wrist during the swing.

This makes a LOT of sense. Looking at Tiger in slow-mo, we can see his wrists stop and the club shaft load, so it makes sense that if we do that, we can still get power, particularly if it helps up center up the strike!

Exactly, especially if you are having a lot of inconsistencies.

Watched a few videos now Zach. I can imagine your high tech approach is a tough hack for many, but I’m really getting so much out of the detailed thinking and how you break down the swing into an exact science! (Quite a bit better than my local golf instructor who tells me to stop thinking so much. Lol) keep up the great work!

I was way too handsy and to long a backswing, I've noticed just lately if I shorten my backswing, I don't hinge as much and tend to hit the ball more solid.

Awesome explanation. I was watching some slow-mo swings of Tiger a few weeks ago and noticed that he didn't really cock his wrists. I tried it at the range and couldn't believe how better I was hitting it. I kept thinking of Stricker as well.

& DeChambeau. He hits it a mile without wrists. I know his speed is off the charts but he proves not using them much works. To use your wrists requires really good timing & your wrist has to be flat & setting your wrists can really cup them at the top & leave the face open at the bottom.
@IamWonderBread
@IamWonderBread Ай бұрын
@@mikerodrick2430he loads his wrists at the top fully instead of earlier. Stricter also has full wrist set if you look at GEARS data. The fact you guys think hinging the wrists so somehow something no one does is astounding to me when every tour pro loads them. You have to load them to have any type of speed.
@IamWonderBread

Tiger and Stricker fully set their wrists regardless of how 2D videos and what they said. GEARS data proves this. No good player has played with no wrist set. Go watch videos of Stricker from face on, he has almost a 90 degree angle at arm parallel.

Really great video Zach but a serious question is why do all KZbin coaches contradict each other. I watch a video by another creator just an hour ago saying the absolute opposite to what you’ve just said 😢 give us a clue to why as it’s not helping the average golfer at all. Thanks 🙏🏻

That's the main problem with youtube videos. Many things are total contradictions. Nearly every other teacher here stresses wrist cock for speed & more distance but the problem is timing the uncocking thru impact. If I use my wrists, too often I'll hit it fat because I can't time it properly.

Hi Zack, Interesting topic. Let me add my .02 please. As you know the grip plays an important part of this comparison. You have a much "stronger" grip than tiger. A weak gripped person cannot cock his wrist as much as you or I who grip it stronger. Interested in your comment about this.
@ZachAllenGolf

You definitely make a good point. About a weak lead hand grip like Jordan Speith. I would say in comparison to Tigers grip and mine, probably not a significant difference.

Should help with a bit more penetrating, and less handsy at impact.

I get this. But for me personally, a more handsy/hinge-y swing just works better. I guess I'm just lazy that way. 😂 Also, what confused me was your point to not copy Bubba, Phil and Daly 'cause they're just too talented... while using Tiger as a reference for the ideal hinge levels. 😆✌️

You might experience some loss initially, but at some point it should help you compress the ball more eventually.

The “quiet” hands technique you’ve been demonstrating has been a real eye opener for me. Feels very strange but it seems to really tighten up my impact location on the face. I’m going to stick with it Thanks for these videos, no one else seems to be talking about this

Zach - in your opinion - is the $295 version of the Hackmotion worth it for us “laypeople”? My understanding is it does not come with pro comparison features which limits its usefulness. Thank you!
