Great info as always! Finding my community and learning how to interact with people on the internet has been a bit difficult - mostly because I haven't found any obvious specific sub genre or niche I fit into. I've asked friends/musicians/etc and they all basically hear a lot of similar influences but don't know any artist they think sounds like an obvious comparison. I've started my spreadsheet though which I love because I'm in Finance :), and I'm being a bit liberal with the types of smaller artists/communities that may be interested in my music. So far I've made a few rando connections which has definitely been rewarding and cool. It's all an experiment at this point and I'm just grateful for these type of videos. At worst they always motivate me to do more / keep trying so thank you

@@Musformation It has probably been that spreadsheet and how it visually became a starting place for me to organize my thoughts on all of this with some direction because it can be massively overwhelming. At least as a 36 year old that was never really into social media, and just kind of coming back into this music world after a multi-year hiatus. But honestly man everything you've put out has been helpful in some way for me. I've watched a lot of your videos over the last year and gone from basically not even knowing how to operate my IG app on my phone to interacting on multiple social platforms and posting content with much more regularity. And I've gone from hating it all to finding value and enjoyment in it. So I'm at least at like Step 1 of where I need to be lol. Thanks again!

Leaving the Latin Grammys in Miami and headed back home to Chicago and while I’m inspired by all the people I met. My fears remain true, Chicago has not been successful at exporting Latin talent. It’s hard to up and leave and start over as a person w a family and I’ve made a name in Chicago and beyond in various different niches that provide me space to continuously work in music (reggaeton, salsa, boleros, pop, Spanglish, English, R&B, hip hop, jazz scenes, as a vocalist, a percussionist). I love music and creating and try to keep a sonic vision in tact as best as I can, but even scouring KZbin, I never truly know if any of this advice works for Latin artist who seem so disjointed and disconnected in their local communities (some like darkwave/punk Spanish goth vibes, other like psyche cumbia, others want the rinse and repeat reggaeton for example). it’s hard to build towards a global exposure by building community in your city. I do it cause I love my community but it does feel insular and just how many concerts are your 200 or so fans going to go to in your city before they get tired after so many years. Not to mention finding publishing deals, booking agencies, or any Chicago based infrastructure is almost impossible. A bit of a Hail Mary from frustrations that I think many folks in similar positions may feel, but Latin is such a huge umbrella term, but I guess if this can work for niche like hyper pop, it should be able to work for Caribbean, Puerto Rican perspectives into Chicago based music finding inspo in House and Juke but mostly sounding like smooth danceable R&Bs and Latin Soul with the occasional Reggaeton flow in Spanglish 😅

This all sounds great, no doubt years of experience help But it would be great to see this into a real context Statistically, there should be an artist or artists interested on working with you, among your subscribers. This is potentially a great series in which it is seen how this methods work on their numbers. That way many other people would learn what do to, and how much it can help them. That way everyone can see it by themselves, how it all has an impact, in the current music business.

@Musformation

1. Split releases are still in and doing features gets done in bands all the time. 2. I find that a lot of time people who say the cold emailing doesn’t work is they tried 4 times and it didn’t work. When the numbers game is you keep up a relationship you comment and occasionally message and slowly build up

Hey Big dog. There's so many mixed ideas out there on how to build fast and efficient. I just spoke with a company who tried selling me their service which teaches how to run fb ads in a very targeted way and to funnel traffic to ones website where you can grab their email and try to market with them for years to come as well as have them as part of an active community on your website. Seemed like a great pillar to add to the arsenal. They were a little pricey though to purchase the mentorship. any comments on that? Further , I'm a diverse artist. I literally do songs in various genres. I feel like my sound is all over the place. Im hoping to build a following based off of being a well rounded diverse talent. Some people think I really have to niche down. Idk. If the talent is there then probably not. It's the same thing if you have a hot supermodel. If she's hot, do you care what niche she's in necessarily? Or do you just care about seeing her content.
@Musformation
@Musformation 21 күн бұрын
So 1. I hate Facebook ads and explain why in many videos here. 2. You should follow your artistic whims but there’s a reason the saying goes “the more niche you go the more you grow” I explain in many videos why it’s hard to grown when your diverse. It’s not an asset.

To do that, I need to put myself out there and get incredible producers and songwriter to work with me, I want to make friends with the same ambition level as me. In the old days, we played shows as openers making fans and connections at venues, eventually making a name locally with promoters and local indie labels and bands. Once we grew out of the local pond, we would expand to neighboring cities. Eventually, if you were good enough and didn't split up, you were likely going to open for a bigger name band and hopefully get noticed by a label. You can skip all of that now and just "be social" online. Whoo'da thunk it? Great video!

I been making music for 20 years. Made so many mistakes in so many ways finding new fans fast has become impossible for me. I've been in the charts TV Radio, Gigs, done update videos and made content 24/7 I'm now working on film music and do many genres of music but it still doesn't seem to be getting any easier. If anything I just get more hate 😅

7:19 this is right, but how do you find your Microniche if you don’t release a bunch of different songs to different communities? Like finding your microniche doesn’t mean sitting and deciding “oh I’m gonna go for that”. YOU DONT KNOW what you are best at until you try different things. The data that you receive back after attempting will show you. If you only release something that you think is the best then your data is limited to that. But the songs you think are the best could be your worst. You can be a great musician, but be horrible at judging songs are ”the best”

That’s actually not right. My book, Rick Rubin, Quest love and David Byrnes all say the same thing. You make what you want to hear and if you try to make what you think the audience wants to you fail. We’ve all seen it a million times but people who haven’t been through it often think it’s the opposite.

@@Musformation actually what you are saying is exactly what I think. I don’t know why it feels for you like my comment contradicts it. I am well aware of what those people say, even though I haven’t read your book yet. I think the music supposed to take people on the journey, and it is only possible if the creator is completely genuine and honest with themselves. I am not saying we need to be creating what we think people will like. What I’m saying is that when I have released a bunch of songs, or the songs that I didn’t think will become popular had the most plays. This is how I learned not only which part of my creations resonate with the audience, but also which creations of mine are the most genuine and authentic… often that are not overly produced, songs that took the least time to make (so they capture whatever they supposed to capture), and often songs were most people participated creative wise. What I’m saying is if I tried to release only the songs that I think are the best I would not release those songs that the audience liked, at all. Especially in the beginning of the career artists don’t even have any data. 📊 Releasing a bunch of singles Help. But not only because of this Spotify discover… I personally think you can release them as a part of 40 songs albums with the same result: if you are really looking for is that data that comes back to you, it will work either way. Well obviously most people will never go to the song number 36. But that’s completely completely different topic. Another thing that I want to emphasize is that when you say “fail”… this word can mean a lot of different things. For example, I never wanted to be the artist number one or for people to recognize me on the street. It would totally ruin my creative space and freedom of expression. I also don’t know why people are looking to be signed. in my eyes, it has no benefits in terms of creativity or profit. In 2024. I would sign with a major for a certain release or a few of them. Which basically means I would trade/sell it to them. But to be signed as an artist… I only see limitations in it. Considering all the tools that are accessible to everyone these days. You know it’s like if you don’t know which bag is the best you buy the most expensive one. But it’s usually not the best one. I know for sure that most people who work for labels are not even into music. This is not the tribe I’m looking for. As a creator, I’m looking for listeners who want or could create music toO. Not to say that real music fans never establish labels. But major labels are straight up tech companies… correct me if I’m wrong

Yeah, I understand. You probably thought that I mean, fabricating some songs that would hit different audience… because it is not even a question for me. I didn’t even think that someone would think like that. But you are right that many people do think so. No I just meant that from different songs that the artist genuinely create, it doesn’t make sense for the artist to pick which of them should be released. Because the artist often has no idea which of the songs are the most powerful and I even have a theory why it is like that. It goes like this: what hits artist the most, leaves the least energy left for the audience. it’s like the wave that hits the shore and there only splash and foam that goes further… where the artist is the shore. But if the artist is the medium, then the wave goes through the artist and hits the audience much stronger.

I make sort of varied styles of hip hop. From pop rap to lofi boom bap to r&b rap blends. It's been difficult finding an audience that enjoys sort of a broad melodic hiphop genre. Any tips for diverse sounding artist growth would be dope. Feels like each single I'm targeting a different subgenre.

Hey Jesse! I just found your channel today which feels serendipitous. I am currently writing a business and marketing plan for a new merch, booking and event management venture for a niche of acts/ audience (that I'll use to also help support a band I am putting together.) Thanks for the spread sheet download, I really appreciate the attention to detail. I am using Chat GPT to break down the process you explained into actionable steps. Would you like to receive what I put together from the process?

I released my most recent single today (wednesday) and found significant less traction than I typically do releasing on a friday. For context I've got a 10k followers and 60k monthlies. Is this strategy more specific for folks with smaller followings? Im still using the rest just curious.
