OOOH an episode on my birthday! And a relatable one at that!! I remember during a special session our whole party got stuck in front of a magic talking gate with a trick riddle thing for nearly an hour. Basically the password was written on to the wall but you had to trick the wall into saying the password. YIRBEL LIVES!

I am no longer allowed to play artificer's because i know too much chemistry . . . I know there's a difference between what I know and what my character knows. So I set the stage by gathering samples of things throughout our journey and practicing with my alchemy kit every evening. Several sessions later my character had discovered multiple ingredients and mixed them together. My artificer made a rocket launcher in a medieval setting . . . i blew up so many things . . . it was glorious!

My group managed to completely skip a quest by managing to convince the shady quest giver that he was in a Zone of Truth and questioned him relentlessly until he slipped up on words. And that’s how my party avoided getting betrayed by him, him making a giant mech to overthrow the king, et cetera.

The explosion story is the reason why you need to put the word "harmless" in the spell.
@hackcubit9663
@hackcubit9663 2 жыл бұрын
That's actually a very good point and fantastic idea. Like granted, as a GM I would have been torn between telling them it's harmless, and answering "well, that's on me for not specifying harmless when I wrote it down." Especially knowing he wanted to make enough explosive chemical to make a dent visible from space, and an explosion that could be felt in the Astral Sea. Centuries later, the clerics would tell of the day that the creator god farted so hard his wife divorced him.

@@alkatron768 Decades ago, in the original canon, magic items of a permanent nature used to be virtually indestructible by default if not specified in the item description. Monsters, events, and objects that could destroy magical items had notes to specify how they could. That's no longer the case because WotC threw out a lot of the default AD&D reality when they took over from TSR.

"Backfire" from the Knack is an understatement. Oh, and I never disallow such repeats in my AD&D campaigns. Those things draw the attention of others in the campaign world, and such an event would draw the attention of the gods. The gods of nature and magic would probably agree to remove knack as an option for the spell after that while every power-hungry person in the campaign would hunt the characters down to learn how that spellcaster was able to do such a powerful blast. I have you beat. My players spent three hours in a room spinning a Homebrew Wheel of Fortune, three real-world hours like your session. They only stopped after they exhausted all their means to recover from future bad spins. They left the dungeon to resupply to come back to continue the adventure. They almost parked in the same room again but instead chose to complete the mission... and took the Wheel of Fortune with them on the way out.

I was thinking when I saw the title that maybe they were in a room with a mirror and a pencil and no obvious exit... ;) You look in the mirror and then look again and see what you saw. You take the saw and saw the pencil in half. Two halves make a whole so you crawl out the hole. (Obviously, it works a lot better when it's spoken instead of written, due to the homophones) :D

Reminds me of what our kobold artificer did...he made a magical bomb with the help of the warlock and sorcerer...10 levels of Sniloc's Snowball Swarm went into that bomb... We didn't find out for another two levels that the bomb tore open a hole into the primordial plane of ice. We had to go back to the castle where we set it off and close it...as well as fight an adult white dragon, several of these horrible giant fire/ice centipedes, and some large ice frogs. The paladin almost died three times on this little sidetrack.

Us being paranoid we try everything in to make sure they were not mimic's and after enough time passed. Let's see... The most absurd item I ever gave my players was an enchanted (or cursed, I suppose) ring, that the players found on the floor beneath a hanged skeleton, which had been a sorceror's apprentice, the creator of the ring. Thing is, the ring had the purpose of identifying every enchanted item the wearer carried. Which It would do. One by one. Including itself. As if a male voice was speaking over and over and over again in the wearer's mind. And it would never cease, not even If the ring was thrown away. It HAD to be taken (or, hilariously enough) reverse-pickpocketed. That ring was the best thing ever. It was, in the end, sold to a shopkeeper that had tried to outsmart the party by accepting a "measly enchanted item" in return for repairing their weapons and armor, as well as a general restocking of items. We laughed ourselves for weeks on end over that. LMAO

So a item story that I have (this was like three years ago details are a little fuzzy) Is I worshipped Loki the god of mischief and we had to go to this town right before we got to this town he gave me a special coin that caused madness to whoever I gave it to and I believe who ever they touched after being affected with the madness this was pretty early on in our campaign so this town we had to go to I think was like anti magic and the guards took over the town and like kidnapped us as soon as we walked in and tied us to poles in town square they were about to begin looting us before killing us and I convinced the guard captain to rummage through my pocket and take the coin because it was SUPER valuable so he does and is then promptly cursed and so do all of his men eventually and they wipe them selves out by killing each other/committing suicide and this was like when we were level 2-3 so that was a pretty fun item story that I have

I remember how to make a bomb sense I'm invisible I can gather the materials I need to to quickly whip this up crude explosive roll really well to improvise and set it off I expected dynamite damage the Dm ruled that it was so well made that it was 5th level fireball level damage in a stairwell with locked doors so that's how the party became domestic terrorists in the matter of 5 minutes so to quote hitchhikers "Don't Panic"

The first story may not be about something like a puzzle, but that's still the reason i stopped using puzzles in my games and hate when other gms put them in theirs. For me at least, there's nothing more boring for the dm to just sit there for 2 hours listening to the players argue about how to solve a puzzle you thought would be easy, and as a player there's nothing more boring than listening to your fellow players argue for 2 hours trying to solve a puzzle the gm thought would be easy. Just make it a knowledge check and let players take 20 if they want. Whatever keeps the game moving forward. As for the second story, nice use of magic and science. I always allow similar effects if they have a grounding in real world science.
