seasonal spending really makes the most sense. it's like the natural and old-fashioned way to shop- the season changes, you see what you need, you buy it then. back in the day maybe the things for that season are only available at that particular time. i think part of our collective problem is that we love things and want all the things all the time, and now we can have them thanks to the internet and cheap labor and cheap materials, and we kind of can't handle it. the old rules of time and place no longer apply. we can get tropical fruits year round, even if we live in the north, for example. it's weird, if you think about it. i mean, even peeps! they used to only come out at easter, but now there are variations for all the holidays, because we are greedy for what we want and want it all the time. it's like humanity got its childish wish that christmas were every day, and we are now living in the consequences of that- nothing is special, we still feel empty, and our planet is drowning in trash.

Yup, that’s how my mom showed me to shop. One or 2 nice things that show you are up to speed with fashion but that are also timeless. People never believe when I get compliments on a certain garment and asked where I got it from “I’ve had it for around 12 years, I don’t think is being made anymore” 😊

It was really great to hear you talk about your online window browsing. That’s one of my most common ways to turn my brain off as well, and I’ve always justified it because I never actually buy anything. But hearing you talk about your habits made me reflect on my own, and it made me realize that it doesn’t actually bring any sort of relaxation, it just drives my anxiety of finding the perfect something. I think I need to double up on figuring out different ways to spend my time, and work on being ok with wanting but not having!

Hannah, I came across your channel just a few weeks ago and you've very quickly advanced to my favourite current youtuber. I am not interested in beauty content per se, but the way you talk about things, even eyeshadows and all that stuff is just so enjoyable, for me not being able to work (usually i work in retail) in isolation it has been very comforting and entertaining. you are very much succeeding at your relaxing content, and you just feel so approachable and positively authentic in your videos. love from Germany.

For me since the beginning of quarantine, I’ve been on the side of “shopping has become a method of coping’, and I definitely went so overboard. I got into this habit of buying whatever made my heart leap from my chest in the moment just because it was something to do. 2021 was the planned no buy year, and January and half of February went so so well and I was so proud of the success. But losing a close family member halfway through February threw me back seeking that dopamine through the coping mechanism I was already used to and which was readily available when so many other coping mechanisms were not, and it was really easy to click that check out button and try to supplement my grief that way, especially since there was an element of hopelessness and uncaring to that grief. I’ve allowed myself a short grace period, and I’m not mad at myself for breaking my no buy, but March 1 I will be back into it.

I totally get the waiting for returned “normalcy” and an acceptance of deprivation. I bought a few purchases with an eye to the future throughout, but it made me feel kind of stupid. One thing I have learned is that I’m a planner and buying stuff mostly for use in the future feels like I’m a fool because how/why plan. Who knows who I will be on the other side of this? I’m not the type of person that’s wearing her normal wardrobe in quarantine, for better or worse. Lifestyle advice, be damned; If I’m cooking my own lunch mid work day and working remote, I’m not wearing my nice dress pants and blouses and risking the wear and stains. So what is my actual wardrobe going to be in a month? 6 months? A year? Who says I even HAVE a job in a year? It’s resulted in a very “make do” attitude since my tastes are not aligning with my usage. So, I feel like I’m hibernating in many ways, including in my shopping behavior. It feels like I’m waiting for spring in many ways after a very long winter Edited to correct verb tense and improve parallelism

I absolutely feel the same, the pandemic is really curbing my desire to spend... It just feels like wanting to buy something just pales in comparison to wanting to go out, wanting to be able to work again, to live my life. Simultaneously, I am falling in LOVE with the collection I have. I am allowing myself a more creative look every day, because no shame interferes with my desire to use beautiful things, to be colourful, to be creative (I work in the sciences - a very male dominated work space and have encountered shame and shaming about beauty and the desire for it in this environment quite a lot. I'm working on it...). My seasonal no-buy feels very easy because of this, too.

I started a budget this year even though I did not have any trouble overspending before. I started it to learn to spend on things I love and not be so restrictive, but what I didn't expect was for it to be soooo hard! I realize now I essentially put myself on a replacements only no buy for as long as I'm an independent adult. And budgeting now is way harder than just not allowing myself things, but probably eventually a good practice in self love.

This resonated with me a lot. I'm so glad you've enjoyed Animal Crossing, I've logged over 700 hours on it since March of last year, and it's actually been a really effective tool for me to dial back my shopping behaviors. I've also been missing my dance of choice (salsa) so much since Covid made close contact impossible, and I recently started doing live youtube styling classes which have brought so much joy into my life! I'm hoping that by practicing, the wait between now and whenever dance clubs open up will hurt a bit less. I'd be super interested in a review for the tile you're thinking of buying, since I've been considering that both for dancing and roller skating 👀

Love extra long videos. I can listen to you talk all day! I also used to online window shop as a break, but never felt rested or fulfilled after. Always have this feeling of regret like I just wasted an hour of my life and accomplished nothing. Would you be interested to do a video where we window shop with you? Almost like a thoughts on new releases video, but it can be of older products. Maybe about highly rated products or "holy grails", and why you'd never buy it. At least that way you are window shopping and being productive at the same time!

When Covid started the grocery stores were so unstocked. I am not panic buying but I am making sure we have enough to get through if we can't get things.

This is easily my favorite HLP video of 2021 so far. I recently re-watched a handful of "No-buy Year" videos, and when I watched this new one, I thought, "Oh, if No-buy Year Hannah could see this . . . " You explained so well how during a singularly stressful, unexpected period of life, you're coping without relying on your unhealthy mechanism of the past. Is it "easy?" No. Is it fun? In its way, it can be, but not in a conventional sense. Is life fine and happy right now? No. But there are serious wins, and this video explains one so well. If you don't see it or feel it right now, I believe eventually you will. Because I'm believing the same thing for myself. I can relate to this. I was working on changing MY unhealthy coping mechanism a few months before lockdown started, and it was a great blessing to myself that I did, because if I hadn't changed the way I cope with high stress, this past year would have been so different and even harder than it has been -- and I have found it very difficult. Congratulations and much love.

I am right with you on tiny waiting just not making a ripple in the endless waiting of the pandemic. I haven't really wanted anything or bought anything (though I took a social media sabbatical in February so that probably helped too). I don't want to say I feel like there's no point, but I'm definitely aware that I have everything I need for this season of my life and aware of the fact that what I want when this ends may be entirely different from what I might want now. So yeah. I'm having pandemic issues of course, but not the overspending one.

Ooh, what's the portable dance floor you're looking at? My husband practices historical longsword fighting, and last summer his footwork drills completely tore up our lawn 😂 I think something like dance floor tiles would be perfect for him to create a practice space out there that wouldn't be so destructive. Also, is it weird that one of my favorite things is pulling something off my wishlist because it didn't age well? There's something so satisfying about it. Knowing I didn't impulsively spend the money on something I eventually lost interest in, and paring the list down to just the stuff that really sparks it for me.

I think when I was first diagnosed with my chronic illness and was housebound, deprivation (socially, financially, emotionally, future/dreams) was such a huge part of my learning, reframing and life and coming to terms with my situation. 6/7 years down the track (and now able to work a couple of shifts a week) getting myself out of deprivation is what is difficult. Even with the pandemic because of my work I've still been leaving the house for work (I work with animals and they still need their needs met) and getting myself to the idea of treating myself with a bought meal with some friends (even if it's over zoom) has been a real struggle. The fear of losing control of my deprivation has been really highlighted. So I'm trying to allow myself to feel the dopamine rush (and that doesn't mean that when I've engaged in purchasing behaviour the past few years it hasn't been unhealthy, it's just been part of the process of letting go of who I was, the life I had and the person I am now). Can't remember now why I decided everyone here needed to know this! But I think it was about how the idea of waiting or deprivation for a long amount of time before buying is an important muscle to build but to not focus on only building that muscle either; long term that muscle can also create issues. Something some people may discover in a year or two...? Life. It's a complicated business!

I realize I did the delayed replacement of a blemish concealer, I used it up last summer and was good until January when I had a really bad breakout! As far as pandemic shopping, early on I had a lot of analysis paralysis around if I was going to buy something it had to be the perfect thing, and of course my results were mixed. Now I've moved into a mindset of what I buy needs to be something I will actually use now (and within my budget) . There are still lots of practical beautiful things to buy, but it has helped with the temptation to shop aspirationally, and I've found joy in quality lounge wear and tea while working from home!

I know you prefer paper books, but library ebooks have been a total lifesaver for me during the pandemic! I know e-readers aren't for everyone but the kindle paperwhite mimics looking like paper so it doesn't give me eye strain (and lacks the internet/social media temptations of a phone or computer, haha), and even my small local library has thousands of ebooks. Totally agree about shopping behavior and the pandemic, I'm having the same reaction. I'm wearing as much makeup as usual (well, apart from lipstick because I do have to leave the house for my job unfortunately) but have only bought 2-3 makeup items since the pandemic began. Idk, it just doesn't feel important anymore. Interested to see what happens when it's over.

Kind of bad of me but I think it's OK as I can afford it and I'm only buying things I genuinely have had on my wishlist for a long time Books, I'm allowed to just buy whatever and I do buy too many but I'm OK with that as they're my mental, intellectual and emotional health and reading more means I shop less. I had that feeling of delaying everything (travel, eating out, shopping, etc.) last year, but then at the end of the year (around the holidays) a dam broke, and I started spending on myself and others pretty heavily. I was so anxious during the beginning of the pandemic (food/supply chain breakdowns, shortages, the stress of the pandemic, worry about my friends/family) that I didn't spend any extra money... on anything. I saved every penny. I was so stressed and worried, this was a way for me to "control" my situation. As the pandemic wore on, something changed... I may have just reached an exhaustion point. So from November to now, I've spent more on myself (and lots on gifts), which I now want to rein in again. I hope to find a balance this year.

Oh, pandemic shopping... I have so many thoughts. During the first few months, I did some regular shopping, but it kind of bummed me out because some beautiful things are sitting in my closet with no where to be worn. And I don’t want to “waste” them on my living room! But I’m looking forward to having reasons to wear them. And I left the tags on so I can still have that ceremonial moment. Now that we’re really in it, I’m really paring back and have a capsule of things I rotate between. Everything is comfy and machine washable and will probably be up on poshmark as soon as I’m vaccinated. In the meantime, I guess I’ll invest in some cold-weather workout gear, because that’s a thing I need now that I didn’t need before...!

Yes to deprivation/waiting feeing easier! You always hit the nail on the head ❤️ For me at least it was much easier in the beginning of the pandemic. Its becoming less so lately, as the full year mark approaches

Hannah, I really believe you have come to like the sense that you are very comfortable in a no buy. You love the challenge and the feeling of accomplishment that you have when you put off buying what you would like to have. You had a life changing event doing your no buy year and you grew from it and I think that carrying that on is an extension of that. You then had a monthly budget in which you practiced spending and gave yourself permission to buy but that original accomplishment of the no buy and the high you felt was so powerful you are drawn back into it. There is nothing wrong with that. There is something from your early years in which you had to live in a sort of spartan way and that is in your memory as being comfortable or comforting. You then made your own way as a young adult and had to find out the trap of having credit cards and having what you wanted when you wanted it. You sort of foundered on the debt and the overabundance of stuff. Now you are moving back into the familiar of having only what you need. But you have the option and ability to to give yourself permission to buy things you want and you are very choosy in those things. I greatly admire you and your relationship with beautiful things. Thanks for sharing your heart.

I, too, experience what you mentioned about the waiting muscle. A lot of things are on hold, so it's OK if I didn't get what I want right now. But, at the same time, I'm allowing myself a little seasonal budget.

I've loved animal crossing since my middle school days and I totally understand the allure. It is very charming and a good creative outlet for me. I love video games but I'm terrible at them so I mostly backseat game. Since you have a switch now, I really recommend Undertale and Celeste! Undertale has an amazing story and it's pretty easy to play. Celeste is harder, but the story helped me deal with a lot of anxiety I was having at the time

i am an adhder and I function the same. My brain runs on a hamster wheel and needs always to be occupied and pursue information. Also pursuing the dopamine constantly is an issue eg shopping hits the dopamine, You are doing a good job of managing this behavior.

This model is something I really feel is good for me, but I've realised I think for me it would be best to do spring shopping and fall shopping. So like March - April and September - October. I think spring and fall are good shopping periods for me, because spring is early enough to plan ahead for seasonal summer things like a swimsuit and fall is early enough to plan ahead for winter for a coat or boots or something if needed. I have not committed to this model as of yet, but I think from spring through fall I am going to plan a 6 month no buy, save for a spree in fall and plan to not shop again until spring. I feel like the saving for the shopping spree is key for me. It's not only budgeted in, but it's money that has been specifically set aside for the purpose of a joy ride. I think I personally would exclude books as well. Replacements also. I'm starting to lose some weight and hoping to continue on. I have a lot of weight to lose and my plan is to try a 33 piece wardrobe when I lose enough weight to need to replace it entirely. In between if I NEED something new, like underwear or pants I'll need to make an exception but be as minimal about it as possible.

Animal crossing! Whats your dream address? I want to visit ! I got a switch last summer and finally started using it more now ! Animal crossing is a slow burn thats for sure. I'm glad that it's cheering you up. Also : I feel that animal crossing is a good place to get that "shopping therapy" because there are just so many items you can get in the game. So its a good outlet for "letting loose and getting that shopping rush."

The remake of skyward sword game is coming out soon. It is a good introduction to the Zelda series because it’s kinda like starting at the beginning of the story. I’ve played almost every Zelda game there is in the past 6/7 years. I am a huge animal crossing fan. Those are probably my top 2 Nintendo series. Oh and Pokémon... but you don’t want to get me started on that. I’ve been playing since 4th grade 😂

Playing Breath of the Wild on the switch has saved me from a lot of shopping desires. Not saying purchasing a video game system is necessary or practical but I only got it so my boyfriend and I could have something to do during the Midwest winter while being trapped inside. I think it’s rekindled my childhood love of video games and I’m pretty thrilled about it.

Interesting about how the pandemic has shaped spending habits. I think I’ve been going back and forth between not spending money, because where am I going to actually use anything I buy- and spending quite a bit of money just to get new things and to feel something. London has been in full lockdown since mid December, and it’s as if I’m getting impatient and impulsively buying stuff just to feel like my life is changing in any capacity. Which I KNOW is terrible for my financial/shopping health but package arrival days feel so good when literally nothing else is happening 😫

Just leaving this here as a heads up: I wouldn't mind at all if you started refusing PR again - whether for a shorter period of time as a trial or all together. I'm here for your essay-ish style of videos talking about beauty and sense-of-self, your ideas on engaging with "stuff you already own" and I prefer your self-sponsored reviews over PR even when you have a say in what is going to be sent to you. So if you ever start to feel like the work-aspect of it becomes a burden, feel free to go back to your channel's roots without PR-content 😘

hahaha Hannah, you don't need to feel like animal crossing is a "not sophisticated enough" hobby, a hobby that requires some kind of "good enough" justification. Maybe you don't think that way at all, but i felt a subtle undercurrent of this "vibe" from the animal crossing talk 😆. And I think that's something we can easily internalise, when the gaming community can be really elitist sometimes and enjoy putting groups down (it's got links to sexism too!). But really, it's fun! and that's enough reasons! 😆 Enjoy gaming!
