You know what’s funny? When I was a kid, I remember specifically seeing an advert for Sailor Moon here in the states and the announcer saying “Boys will like it for it’s non-stop action, and girls will love it for their pretty transformations.” Now I’m hearing in this video that Takeuchi-San thought the opposite. She believed that boys would like the show because of how pretty the girls are, and girls would love it because of the action (especially since it’s all girls, like them). I think it’s safe to say that Takeuchi-San won that argument for the most part.

Many magical girl anime feature themes of friendship, love, and self-discovery, and can offer a positive and inspiring message for viewers of all ages. Sailor Moon here, in particular, has had a significant impact on the magical girl genre and has helped to popularize it around the world. By introducing a strong and relatable female protagonist and incorporating themes of feminism and empowerment, Sailor Moon has become a cultural icon and has inspired generations of fans.

@@normadgarmez7026 That's a great point! Sailor Moon definitely had a significant impact on the magical girl genre, as it helped to expand the genre beyond its traditional slice of life format and incorporate more complex themes and storylines. By introducing elements of action, adventure, and romance, Sailor Moon helped to create a new subgenre within the magical girl genre known as "mahou shoujo heroines". These heroines were not just cute and bubbly, but also strong, independent, and capable of fighting for what they believe in. This shift helped to make the genre more appealing to a wider audience and inspired countless other magical girl anime to follow in its footsteps.

@XeonAlpha Жыл бұрын
@@sandiego2380 @sandiego2380 That's not what I said, AT ALL. Seriously, the fact that that's your interpretation of my comment says more about your own prejudices and perceived stereotypes than anything. Sailor Moon depicted queer characters in animation all the way back in the early 90's (no matter how much DiC and the US censors tried to cover it up), something that was unheard of in animation at the time. Those of us who could read between the lines (consciously or unconsciously) got comfort from watching it because of that. We didn't get representation in pop culture, let alone shows I was allowed to watch. So yeah, I latched onto Sailor Moon as a young queer kid, and it helped me through some very dark times. Let me make this quite clear: *YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIKE ANYTHING YOU WANT, WHOMEVER YOU ARE, AND NO ONE CAN JUDGE YOU FOR IT."* Your comment implying that my own lived experience is somehow invalid because it plays into what can only be your imagined stereotype is dismissive, insulting, and offensive. The only thing giving into stereotypes here is that someone on KZbin gets butthurt about something that doesn't affect them in the slightest and feel the need to throw out an inane comment trying to tear someone else down.

I first started watching Sailor Moon in '95. It wasn't until four years later I watched it again and I was hooked. I never read the manga, just watched the anime. I admit that I never watched a series about junior high school girls who transformed to become super heroines, like Superfriends. I didn't know that Naoko based this series on her childhood background about parents she earned a degree in chemistry and based on minerals and gemstones and using her neighborhood she grew up in and empowering women as main protagonist. I can't believe that the male editors didn't want her series publish, but she proved them wrong. I still can't believe how the American version changed about Haruka and Mitcheru's releationship about being lgbtq and avoiding controversy surrounding their homosexuality. I enjoy the live action version in 2003 when I watched the series from my anime club at UT Arlington. I was really hooked into the series and I enjoy how she went deeper in the characters based on the manga instead of anime re make. I would like to meet her at a anime convention in Texas someday.

Like a lot of 90’s kids in America my first exposure to Sailor Moon was on Toonami, and as a boy who knew at an early age that he was queer but didn’t put the pieces together until his late teens I loved the series. Of course the internet wasn’t a thing so I never knew about the major changes and queer censorship which sucks (although to be honest the characters’ name changes in the DIC and Cloverway dubs didn’t bother me as much, but I’m glad Viz gave them their original names back). Learning about Naoko Takeuchi’s backstory, inspiration, and vision was really damn cool so thank you for providing insight about a really amazing woman. One small bit of constructive criticism though -and pleeeease don’t take this the wrong way- but from one creative to another the overuse of stock video clips to give visual representation of feelings or themes was a bit too much and distracted from the subject.

I think what Naoko Takeuchi created was a Masterpiece, regardless the Original Sailor Moon Dub had it’s ups and downs, the Live Action one from 2003 was only Season 1 based (Happy 20th Anniversary to PGSM from 2003 BTW 🥳🎉🌙). And Viz definitely had an improvement on the voice actors, and getting the lost episodes and the Season 5 Dub for the Original 90s Sailor Moon out in the Early 2010s, plus doing a Reboot Series that was shorter and 8n higher quality animation. So Thank You Naoko Takeuchi for creating Sailor Moon, an anime that would change the World that was a Masterpiece by all means, and Happy 31st Birthday/Anniversary to Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon in 2023 this year 🥳🎉🌙, and Happy 20th Anniversary to PGSM as well 🥳🎉🌙. I don't really enjoy shoujo manga/anime, but Sailor Moon was so empowering, especially because Usagi was so clumsy and ditzy like I am. It's nice to see that she rises into her strength, as it's a natural growth that happens to girls as we see the power we truly have. The next best shoujo comic is Peach Girl. She overcame her dark skin to understand her own beauty, another trope that I related to deeply as a mixed race American. Naoko Takeuchi is one of the legends of comics and feminism too.

I don't know why she's got to be so reclusive, like Masamune Shirow is. You don't see people like Rumiko Takahashi or Hayao Miyazaki hiding under the radar. Because of the lack of public exposure we know very little about her and what she's doing now No doubt she worked hard, but the truth is this was around the time when the manga industry was relatively in a "blank slate", where any new archetype introduced that were previously unknown to the industry would be welcomed. To put it simply, she introduced a concept that was fresh at the time and it clicked with consumers, thus making a name for herself in a time when the masses were relatively open minded compared to modern days. Today however, the industry is so saturated with various archetypes that any derivatives would not have the same effect as it once did, or rather it has to be judged on more than just the archetype itself to be deemed worthy of interest Looks like Takeuchi shares some similarity with Megumi Hayashibara. They both knew what they wanted to do in life, but their parents asked them to learn a more conventional trade because there's very little stability in a career as a mangaka/seiyuu. So they heed their parents wishes and got normal jobs, but still continued to pursue their original career at the same time, and eventually their original career paid off big time and they end up ditching their normal jobs and went on to become famous in their respective fields As for the purposed Hollywood adaptation, Osano is basically saying western mindset is incompatible with the Japanese counterpart, given that the west had already altered her original work once just to fit their social norms "The demands seemed to never stop" That's the unfortunate reality of being a mangaka, once you stop you'll quickly find yourself becoming yesterday's news. This industry is cutthroat and unforgiving, there are too many newcomers looking to make a name for themselves, and they are not apologetic for taking your place in order to achieve their own goals
