Zac Efron was once an actor seemingly stuck in the publics image as, that kid from High School Musical. Though as years progressed, Zac Efron set out to prove he was capable of so much more than playing a teenage heartthrob. Starring in the comedy Neighbors alongside Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, and Dave Franco was that start of a major shift in the roles Zac Efron would be offered. Proving to the movie going public that he was a real talent, and was not about to be typecasted the rest of his life.

I’ve always found Zac Efron to be an extremely under appreciated talent, especially for someone who got their big break on Disney Channel. He’s actually a really strong emotional actor, and I love him in everything I see him in.

Fun Fact: The final scene between Mac and Teddy outside of the Abercrombie and Fitch store was completely improvised. Zac Efron had no idea that Seth Rogen would take off his shirt.

Definitely one of the LAST comedies, when you think about it too. What was the last really notable comedy that's come out and made an impact since that movie? The sequel? The king of Staten Island (even though that one seems more like a borderline drama)? I can't even believe it, but it feels like somehow it's a dying genre.

His best role is in Greatest Beer Run Ever. The result of being a wholesome well intentioned person who doesn't understand the gravity of the situation and the mindset of the people in that situation. Wanting to do something good for others but lacking the experience to empathize at a level that will reveal what those others really need. The depth of the characters creates an environment with room for more complex humor and it really worked for me. Check it out if you haven't seen it

I like that the role of Teddy, an immature Frat Bro, allowed Zac Efron to break out of the twee family friendly mould that High School Musical had given him. He showed that he could play a different type of character than Troy Bolton, and that he was a versatile actor.

To reiterate what you said, I think it worked because it was a soft turn, not a hard turn, for Zac Efron. While he's playing a darker role in Neighbors, the movie overall is still a comedy. While Teddy is a dark character, since it's a comedy film, it's a funny dark character. If Zac played a dark villain in a drama from the start, the transition would not have gone so well.

I was a big HSM fan when I was younger, then I saw him star in Charlie St. Cloud (drama) and 17 again (comedy) and I remember thinking "Wow. He's actually a really good actor." Since then I haven't really kept associating him with HSM that much, since he's had a flourishing career for many years now. But I rewatched the HSM films recently and I gotta say, while there are some cringey moments, some things were better than I remember. Like the song "Scream" where Troy has an identity crisis and Efron puts on a fantastic performance, both in song and dance, while showing all the different emotions and thoughts on his face. Amazing actor.

Analyse the parody "Not Another Teen Movie". I had seen it in college and though I found it funny, I didn't get many undertones. Now 15 years later, after having seen many movies and having been through phases of life, I understand the presence of subtle and blatant dirty humour while also lampooning the concept of teen movies. Plus it has a few people who would go on to become more renowned - Chris Evans, Josh Radnor. Has cameos by past stars Mr.T , Molly Ringwald and contemporary ones like Melissa Joan Hart and Jaime Pressly... etc. But of course, a lot of the material is also offensive which will not fly today.

Idk I actually liked The Good Son, I think McCauley did a great job at being an unsettling psychopathic kid. Elijah Wood also was great, don’t see many movies where two child actors display those kinds of emotions without it coming across as corny. Maybe I’m biased because I grew up in a very similar situation to the younger sister in the movie.

I personally never saw him as a Disney guy maybe cuz I became a fan of him around Charlie st could. But with the 4 indie films he did from 08-13 I knew he could act and neighbors and it’s sequel really enhanced Zac Efron ‘s Markability also post 2014 films even the comedy’s have been extremely good imo. From Mike and Dave to extremely wicked. But what really boosted him was beer run and now iron claw. Who knows maybe he’ll get a Golden Globe or Oscar nomination in ‘24 for it. Or get one step closer before he’s 40. He’s kind of like a mix between James Franco and Matthew McConaughey, acting wise with the looks of Brad Pitt.
