In the war of the golden stool and the Sargentii war (1874) in Ghana the British brought most troops from Nigeria. They also had troops from southern Ghana and the West Indies. If not for Africans, Africa wouldn’t have been colonized. It was never plainly the British Vs Africans. British always had Africans allies in order to colonize.

...yes and that happend in almost any encounter the Brits (and European in general) had with African nations and empires. But they really gained the upper hand when, at the end of XIX century, they began to use automatic weapons like the Maxim machine gun...and World War One showed the world how destructive that weapon was...

Asanté Akan, Africans and black people in general do not understand themselves, probably the Bible played a big part. Look, it's unbelievable how to this day blacks still don't understand they are one family, the all came from one single first couple, what they eat in Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, is the same in Congo, Angola, South Africa etc, the slight variations are due to them having different colonizers in the past. The world know it that Africans are one family, because we don't understand it, they purposely use it to their advantage. Sad, time to re-learn ourselves.

@@nekongovitankanga A lot of what you said isnt true. Africa was never one big country and we never shared one Culture. Africa has always been diverse because of its my tribes and cultures MOST of which have completely DIFFERENT origins. Before colonialism there was already tension and yearsss long history between tribes due to cultural differences and often also because of the different origins some tribes and ethnic groups shared. Ofcourse a new enemy is going to benefit of the 100 year rivarlry two tribes may have had. Also no we do not all eat the same food ironically enough the only reason many nations now share similar cuisine isnt because of africans but because of Europeans. Because of europeans much of our cuisine became depended on the food europeans brought from other continents.. eg Maize, Cassava etc If it wasnt for europeans we would notice how different our NATIVE cuisines really are... South, central and west african cuisine wouldnt share so many similarities.

Abayomi Usi, correct your comment, I said one family, not one country. Expand your thinking, even in the same house, the same family différences do exist, but doesn't say due to such differences, the same family is no longer the same. Many of the things you and some black people think and say were brought to Africa by the Europeans, is actually complete nonsense, however the winner writes the history, doesn't matter how foolish it may look or sound. Ask any Congolese or people from Angola to tell you the meaning of "MPUTU", that's how my African ancestors called the Europeans, if your Kings cowardly accepted the Europeans, in the Kongo Kingdom it was the reverse, the first major battle took place at Ambwila in 1665, King Vita Nkanga's head got decapitated and taken to Rome for mass celebration, after more than 8 hours of brutal fight. There is so much to say, however the rest will be told another day.

@@lilmizzije Many people today are so Westernised that they start to resent their own African cultures. I was guilty of that, too! I grew up hating my heritage, so I became an Anglophone. However, there were times when I had an identity crisis: "Was I an American-wannabe or a Xhosa outcast? When I learned about colonialism in detail last year, I had a change of heart and started respecting my heritage more. This year, I'm relearning my mother tongue, isiXhosa, and it fills a long-empty pit in my heart. :), yet I still keep my American-inspired self because I grew up with this persona. Now two identities unite and work together equally. I'm not saying that Africans should give up Western culture, I'm saying that they shouldn't give up their own heritage for Western culture. Instead, Africa should use Western education and African philosophies, customs, etc. to strengthen herself!

@@loyisomomoti2213 A lot of Africans need to undergo decolonisation. A lot of us are mentally colonised and don't even know it🤷🏽‍♀️. For example, viewing the traditional religions of our ancestors negatively and refusing to reconnect or learn about them meanwhile willingly practising Christianity and Islam. Like HELLO you think polytheism (traditionalism)/ the religion of your ancestors is unimportant or outdated yet you believe in a religion that originated in the middle east. 😫🤣. I'm now aware that we are conditioned to consider "Colonialism" as just a "European" phenomena. Colonialism may just be what happened continuously for thousands of years.

Not true about the Arabs-they were mostly traders with the indigenous sub-Saharan Africans. Read about the Berlin Conference and the Scramble for Africa in 1884 or thereabouts...you will learn more about what really went down during that period, how Europeans carved up the continent to steal its vast natural resources which they needed for their new factories in Europe. Afrika needs her own [berlin-type] conference, were we lay out the flow of the continent in terms that make the most sense for us - and the education that you continue to provide, reminding us how we got here, should greatly assist in this! My great grandfather was one of the independent Africa traders who got together to form the United Africa Company, he operated between Liverpool and Lagos. His son, my grandfather, worked for him and inherited his position at UAC then later Unilever after they merged with the Dutch Lever Bros firm. Ironically when I was growing up my grandfather was one of the least racist people I knew, probably because he met and worked with Africans. There must many ordinary white British people like me who directly benefited from their ancestors' part in colonialism and many more who indirectly benefited. We all need to acknowledge the debt we owe africa and its people.

A stellar job. The Colonisation was post the Berlin Conference some times referred to as the West African or Congo Conference. Finally putting paid! to the African Empires and getting us to think in European languages and telling everyone we had no form of written or documented communication. Our forms of writing were labelled as demonic, so we condemn our identity. A real battle to conquer the mind, to reduce/contain uprisings on one of the largest continents on the planet. Even the world maps were doctored to show Africa smaller than its real size...

From my history class, I learned that the British Indirect rule system in Nigeria was most successful in the North because of the centralised system of govt. The emirs and sultan had all the powers and so the British just had to convince the leaders, so they could convince their ppl. Partially successful in West but not like the north because the Yorubas has checks and balance. The Alafin (king) had veto power but his power was regulated by the Oyomesi (council of elders usually 7 members). Which meant he had to discuss everything with the council before making the final decision. It's easier convincing 1 person(north) than 8 persons (west). Moreover, if the Alafin oversteps his bound, the oyomesi would deliver an empty calabash which means he must commit suicide. Totally unsuccessful in the South east (Igbo) because they were not centralized and had no checks and balances. Had so many kings which made it difficult to unite the ppl. The british sent Warrant chiefs to Igbo communities but they were mostly ignored, beaten and sometimes killed.

@@ane1315 With due respect, that is the popular history but that is not the truth. Biafran attempt to leave Nigeria and the January 15 coup are two different things. The January 15 coup was a coup by Junior officers of Nigerian army who agreed were mostly Igbos but had a lot of non Igbos like Lt Tijan Kitsina ( a Fulani), Ademoyega (a Yoruba) and without Ojukwu and Aguiyi Ironsi, the coup would have totally succeeded. By the way, Aguiyi was a target but he escaped and countered the coup. Frankly with all due respect to you, that a Nigerian thinks that the death of 25 people including an Igbo person justifies the genocidal killing of more than 3 million Igbos is the highest level of wickedness I have seen in this world. Probably, this mindset is the justification for the wholesome killings still going on in Nigeria. Then tell me why people that killed all of a country founding fathers (mistakenly letting their tribesman elders flew out) in 1966 don't want to be part of that same country they in 1967 murdered many to unite under their rule, just by the next yeah? Phase 1. The Europeans (including the British) exploited pre-existing rivalries between ethnic groups and kingdoms and sold them a bunch of weapons to keep it going. Phase 2. Through the capture and sale of their enemies for short term economic gain, all groups were weakened enough for Europeans to come in with their own new weapons tech created from exponential profits made from the slave trade a few decades prior. Europeans and especially the Chinese play the long game.

Nigeria being the most populated country in Africa and the most populated black Nation of the World has never worked together as one people. There's no way people of different background who were merged together by the British could thrive under one National interest. The British were able to couple certain group of people made up of Three Major Ethnicity group with different Languages, Cultures and Religious believe in a nation they named Nigeria. It's vital for Nigeria with excessive population of 200 million people to embark in accord to decolonize herself from the British messed up system, this has to be done through Referendum which will allow those who wish to be free from the British Enclave called Nigeria to freely go form their Nation, hence it will bring lasting peace, prosperity and harmonious coexistence within the Region and Africa generally.

A. Rashad, please, don't make me laugh. It is still the same today, whenever you see black people in general together all they do argue among themselves, when you are like that people will easily take advantage of you. In the context of the Europeans arriving into Africa, it was soft power first, they converted Africans into Christianity and Islam, then they changed their attitude, force started being used, when Africans complained, they showed them Biblical verses, if you don't obey, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Thus seeing Africans as Christians or Muslims is cowardness

Cyclone IDA hit, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, how many black nations or even millionaires have sent their help, or even ordinary blacks from other countries gone to help??? So, back in 1482, the Portuguese arrived in Kongo Kingdom, left and came back again 1491,this time with a plan, first convert Africans into Christianity and then started capturing slaves and colonizing the locals. A. Rashad, I agree. On Religion part or spirituality it's the same we think and believe, but other's got their views which we must respect and hope as we move forward, our true God will reveal to us whichever way to follow. Please READ: Exodus 12:40. Also do your own research, King John I or Nzinga NKUWU from the Kongo Kingdom received baptism in 1491, the official entry of Christianity into Africa, because the brand of Christianity which entered Ethiopia and Egypt had not spread throughout the continent as such had no spiritual impact on us as Africans. After King Nzinga Nkuwu's baptism, which meant that Africa had lost its spiritual powers, the start of paying back for our forefathers sins in ancient Egypt. In 1706, Kimpa Vita preached and prophesied the return to our ancestral spirituality, is burnt alive together with her child and husband by Catholic priests, before getting into the fire, she promised the return of her son to reveal to Africans and blacks in general, the lies of Christianity. In 1921, Mfumu Kimbangu Mvuluzi denounced Christianity and started preaching our African ancestral religion, during the 3 months performed greater miracles never seen or heard by any prophet on this planet, from Jesus to Muhammad, three months later was arrested and spent 30 years in prison; his crime was he had misinterpreted the Bible. To conclude: 1491-1706, we have 215, which is half of 430 yrs(this means Africa should have been free along time ago, but our brothers participated in burning Kimpa Vita , when she begged them not to do so), From 1491-1921, we have 430 years, the total of years the time when the Israelites stayed and were mistreated by our Egyptian ancestors. So, Mfumu Kimbangu Mvuluzi is the saviour of Africa and of the black race, it is time to recognise him and leave all those oppressive and imported Religions, thus to please God and our ancestors. Any questions, please ask. INGETA, Hotep

Some important points. 1. No mention of British Activity to abolish the Slave Trade in the region - Hence the Colony of Lagos 2. No mention of the importance of Commerce , in particular Palm Oil for soup for the Industrialised Britain, King Ja Ja and the Liverpool Merchants 3. No mention of the Berlin Conference of 1885 4. No mention of the reluctance of the British Government to have any colony in Nigeria upon till 1900 5. No mention of the Treaties signed (Dodgy or otherwise) between the African Rulers and British Companies/Governments 6. Irrespective of the Maxim Gun - a presence of just 2,000 British Officials, Administrators, Engineers and some Soldiers cannot and would not be able to subdue a population as vast as Nigeria by Force. There was a strong degree of co-operation and also "Divide and Rule" . Otherwise a good condensed overview. Sir Fredrick Lugard and Sir George Goldie ( he dropped the Taubman much earlier on in life) were pioneers of their time One has to appreciate the impact of an industrialised nation meeting and trading with various Feudal principalities. The British model of Colonial rule was much more restrained than either the French ( Centralised) or Germans. It was through the principle of Indirect rule that Lugard brought with him from his experience in India and adapted more thoroughly while in Nigeria that 2,000 British subjects managed to command an area and population vastly greater than Britain it'sself. Bottom line was that both parties benefited. The problems start when you have white settlers, that creates a different dynamic. As Kenya, Northern and Southern Rhodesia, South Africa and Namibia demonstrated for the British.

Nigeria was never colonised. It may have been briefly administered by Britain, but there certainly wasnt masses of colonists who went to Nigeria.

I think it’s good this story gets told, the story of how West Africa in particular Nigeria was colonised had always been abit sketchy, which makes out that no Tribes in Nigeria offered resistance to Europeans and although were engaged in inter tribal wars and internal infractions were obliviously selling out and depleting their population to appease the Whites for just Gun powder .... which is ridiculous.... Yes the Yoruba were heavily engaged in slavery but they were at war with the Dahomey, Fulani and internal factions. The Benin also through empire expansion, even the Igbo and Calabri who did not have extensive empires but equally were more clan focused .

Is Nigeria in unity since its creation in 1914 by British government till today? The answer is NO. Do Hausa fulanis or Yoruba ethnic groups love and accept the Igbo ethnic group? The answer is still NO. Is there any peace in the so called Nigeria of today? The answer is still NO. Why are hundreds of Christians from Middle Belt Region and the Eastern Region of Biafra land being killed daily by Fulani herdsmen and Miyetti Allah while the Nigeria federal government led by Muslim Jihadist APC party keep mute and the local media like NTA, Channels TV, AriseTV, AIT, TVC, Foreign media like BBC, CNN, France 24 or RT not reporting any of the heinous human killings going on in Nigeria? So many injustice and human killing going on in Nigeria daily and no one is talking about it. Nigeria is not working. Nigeria is not One or United and can never be one country even in thousands of year to come. Nigeria is a creation of British government for their economic interests. Nigeria as a country is a British experiment and it's not working rather millions of people are being killed daily and the country is moving backward. No human or capital development, no good road, no good basic amenities, education or conductive classroom for the students, no good hospital or electricity, government is full of corrupt officials who finds it fun to embezzle money meant for the provision of basic amenities for the poor masses, no employment for the youths or university graduates despite being one of the major oil producer in the world. Importation of foreign products are on the rise. Nothing valuable is being produced in Nigeria as the government policy is not conductive to foreign investors and the local industries are closing up due to poor electricity supply, unstable exchange rate and inflations. The only solution is to divide Nigeria and let Biafra/Igbo people seek for self-determination and restore their total independence from the British forced/created zoo country called Nigeria.
