On January 22, 1824, in the Battle of Nsamankow, the great Asante "Ashanti" defeated the British general officer Charles MacCarthy along with his battalions forces were killed. The Ashanti defeated the British and their African allies, the Fante and the Denkyirans, again in the Battle of Efutu later that year. The British were forced to withdraw to their colony at Sierra Leone in 1828. The war officially ended in 1831, after the Ashanti accepted the Pra River as the boundary between the British-controlled Fante coastal region and the Ashanti territories.

Fantastic! After the "How Nigeria was colonized" episode I hoped for the Ghana one! And I really appreciate how you covered not just the Ashanteman colonization history but you included also the Fante, Ewe and northern regions story. I'm so proud as a Kwahu Akan (paternal side) and Anlo Ewe (maternal side) that you exposed to the world how such a fierce resistance we put on to the colonizers' forces. And the Defence of the Golden Stool is one of the most notable and successfull acts of defiance made by Africans agains European colonization... The real reason Asante was defeated in the golden stool war is due to the fact many powerful chiefs decided not to fight. There was a civil war in Asante years before. The British and their African allies didn’t face off against Asante as a whole. They only fought a faction of the army.
@Kya1942 Жыл бұрын
Additionally, the fantes, gas, west indian army and the hausa regiment from Nigeria were included to defeat my people. The British could not defeat Ashanti with their own army even in other areas of Africa it applied. They make it seem as if they were that tough.

Ashantis till this day have always been very brave and extremely proud of their culture. I never knew how some parts of Ghana felt the “Ghanaian culture’ like our languages were soo inferior, until I moved to Accra (capital of Ghana) a few years ago. In the Ashanti kingdom where I was raised pride of culture is a way of life. The way we carry ourselves, our language, Ashanti garments and adornments, and almost loud in a sense too, hence Ashantis are seen as arrogant by some. We are proud to speak our Language which is Twi eloquently and not “intentionally” mix it with English to make the sentence supposedly sound nicer as others do, and also some are just shy to speak their native language etc. It’s a part of how Ashanti kids are raised. In a group, U can always make out the Ashanti by how boastful they are are...clearly 😂✌🏾

i worked with a man from Ghana who told me that he was not like the U.S. blacks. he claimed that his family sold us the slaves, and that those slaves were the trouble makers of their land. he was on the phone all day long and when i would give him a ride home from work, he would ask me to stop so he could buy disposable phones...he would always be calling his children on those phones...he had 8 children all from different women. their culture believe men can have many wives and concubines and many children. and the disposable phones were to avoid paying child support for those children. he would give me some african roots in vodka after giving him a ride home and he still had other girlfriends other than the one he was living with right or wrong, he lived aaccording to his culture and he was friendly and a great worker

The war for the golden stool was the last war inwhich the Ashantis were defeated and allowed for colonization of the Ashantis. There were a lot of clashes between the Ashantis and the British but in all, there were about 4 main wars with British. The Ashantis won the first 2 and lost the last 2 including the war of the golden stool.

Would be interesting to see the progress and success of Africa if all Africans decided to stop building other countries and continents but focus on building Africa. Under great leadership. Then we would not have to deal with racism. Let us be selfishly united in our dealings with each other. I have a friend (East African. Not gonna mention the country she's from) who has only been to her country once when she was 4yrs old. She's 20 now and still refuses to listen to the history of Africa cos all she knows about Africa is voodoo, evil and corruption. She's now warming up to the idea of African history but it is sad to see how Africans growing up outside Africa are being brainwashed. I can't blame it all on the white man though. The Europeans were only able to defeat the Asantes because they teamed up with the Fantes. That's where divide and conquer started.

According to my history teacher Ghana (Gold Coast) would have been like South Africa if it was not for the people of the coast which were not mentioned in this video. The Asantes moved further inland of modern day Ghana. Many other Europeans tried to colonize Ghana too like the Dutch and Portuguese. But they couldn't due to the nature of the people of the south who created the Black Elite. It was through brain rather than brawn that led to the independence of Ghana. Once the Asantes saw how financially beneficial it was to work with the British than fight the British they decided to fight with the people of the coast to in order to reclaim the coast. But they did not win. The Ghanaians know how the finesse people with charm, intrigue and sophistication which led them to the first independent country plus the most diplomatic.

I didn't know how complex the colonization of Ghana was(however, it doesn't surprise me that the British used deceptive tactics), I thought it was just a matter of the European"s superior weapons power alone, the" little" details I learn gives me an entirely new(and better, more accurate) view of the "Big Picture". Our African ancestors weren't these backward, unorganized types that Europeans(and Whites in general)paint them out to be.

stop the lie. I beg .. The independence was worn by coastal people. The Ga tribe who supported and Nkrumah's campaign was financed by Naa Dede (The lady on 50p coins) and also support from Fantes

@Stanley Dougé nope, Khoisan are the oldest ethnic group in human existence, they live in South African, Africans traveled from South and Central Africa to Eastern Africa, then people travelled from there to around the world, to India, North Africa, Europe, Asia, then back to West, Central, and South Africa

They only succeeded because Prempeh I was very young and weak. And they also used the help of a traitor called Kwame Tua from amongst us, who gave the British a lot of information about we the Ashantis. The British themselves couldn't fight the Ashantis alone as no European can because they'll even die on arrival. They employed the services of other African tribes especially the Hausa from Nigeria, people from Sierra leone and most of the southern tribes of Ghana. They were lucky because if it was the great days of Osei Tutu I, Osei Bonsu, Opoku Ware I and "Osei Kwadwo Okoawia" the story would have been different. We still have the head of captain George McCarthy. Asante can never die, the Golden Stool is our soul. Still "Wo kum apem aa , Apem beba" To wit "If you kill thousand, Thousand will come" Asante Kotoko

Africans needed to be united. If the other ethnic groups were united with the Asantes, the British will have taken a good lesson of inability to colonise Ghana. With only Asantes, they fought for 100 years. Asantes has few allies and included Bonos, who are brothers to Asantes. The Dagombas contributed soldiers to help. But the others trusted the whites, and that plan of Asante killing and exacting from the British were spoilt. So so sad
