Really nice find at 8:55. That's a pretty fundamental defensive principle, you always switch those kinds of actions, especially if its guard guard. If you don't Norman has to lose sight of the ball to chase his man because of the angle of the screen, and if the screen makes contact theres nowhere for help to come from.

People got to realize that if Aaron Gordon would of went to Portland, we would of had to give up picks in which in the Powell trade, we didn’t have to and in Terry Stotts system, Aaron Gordon would of just been a spot up shooter and wouldn’t have helped us become that much better. With Powell, you are able to have a 3rd scorer who can give u 15-20+ ever night on good efficiency and he fits more into the blazers offense more due to his shooting

This was a smart move. Trent Jr can't score off the dribble. We still have height with our small forwards. Melo, Nassir, Jones, and Covington give this team plenty of versatility.

Just shows how trash Portlands defense is no proper rotations and pick ups, just leave players open when a breakdown occurs because of dumb lack of communication

And breakdowns occur often with their star players being subpar on ball defenders

It’s the coach I promise lol 😂. If you ever watch the games, the coach only tells them to drop coverage most of the time 😭. Blazers would be a very great team if they got a new coach. The only reason their offense is good is because of their players. I personally hardly see any good sets. So iso-heavy and pick & roll heavy. They just need a new coach.

@@tsiyong7583 or maybe rogue nurk can be their defensive coach, lol
@pdxgolfpro3 жыл бұрын
They’ve had no rim protection for most of the year with Nurk out. With Nurk back the last few games the defense has looked much better. It’ll be interesting after a few more games to look at the defensive numbers before and after Nurks return. I expect them to be at least a middle of the league defense compared to bottom. Rim protection is important.

@@tsiyong7583 1000%. He really brings pretty much nothing at this point besides his shitty conservative defensive schemes that get ripped apart, and our offense most of the time is literally 24 hour fitness basketball. Most other fan/media bases would of had stotts on his way out the door a while ago but being a small market that is obsessed with having a good culture we have big time homers whos arguments in favor of him basically boil down to “well hes a great guy and players like him and hey we have a pretty good record (ignoring how much dame is the reason for that)”. its already been on record that stotts was gonna get fired after we got embarrassed by the pelicans but dame begged our gm to save his job (dames loyalty to his guys can be a curse sometimes). Hes finally on the hot seat this year w ownership and more of the fan base and i think theres finally a good chance hes fired this summer. But yeah i think with how shittily our team is coached it should highlight how impressive what lillard has been doing the last few years is, especially in his ability to carry us down the stretch of tight games, the dude really gets no help from his coach, he has to go out there and fuckin improvise most of the time. Dame also gets too much shit for us losing in the playoffs when so much of it is literally just the other team hard doubling and trapping dame and so dame passes and we end up in a 4v3 situation and years later stotts STILL cant figure out a plan to help us capitalize off that so teams face no punishment for loading up on dame every play. Kinda telling that our answer for dame getting trapped was for him to learn how to shoot from half court and start pick and rolls 50 ft from the basket

Agree. I worry about Norman's chances of getting paid properly after this period of being suppressed out there in Portland. We can see that Trent is an awesome player, so it wasn't his playing that was the problem in Portland, it was the team. Same issue with Norm. Oddly, they don't seem to notice that their playing is part of what's getting in their own way of getting further in the playoffs... 🤷🏼♀️

Interesting. In the past, terry stotts has actually implemented a 3 guard lineup of dame, cj, and shabazz napier with varying results. Defensively they would be taking a hit obviously, but that could be a very potent lineup offensively is that clock motion offense

Norman actually has a 6’11 wingspan and is a much better than dame and CJ on defense. Powell, roco and nurk will help a lot on D

Blazers essentially said, screw defense we're gonna go all offense. I still think think they need a wing stopper to match LeBrons and the Kawhis of the world (Cov is not a good on-ball defender, allthough he is the best team defender in the NBA).
@abehawkey34023 жыл бұрын
Replacing Trent Jr. with Powell in the lineup doesn't strike me as a particularly all offense move...Powell gives up a little height but is much better off-ball and in passing lanes than Trent, heck even on-ball. Agreed about their lack of wing depth, but with Nurkic and Powell added to the defense it seems like rotations and pick and roll defense should at least improve- but in playoff-time half court sets, you're right that they will run into trouble.

@@tsiyong7583 You cannot entrust DJJ to guard a bulky wing (like Kawhi or Bron) in an intense playoff. They need a wing stopper, and their 29th ranked defense will not take them anywhere.

@@vasudevan333 nah djj is undersized but hes the one dude on the roster id feel fairly comfortable having guard any superstar wing, hes been very good on-ball even against dudes that outsize him a bit all year, he did for the heat last year too. Sure hes not a PERFECT answer but rly hes does pretty damn well. Also this def isnt a “screw defense” move, norm is probably average defensively but he is still definitely an upgrade on that end from trent and hood, i love trent but his defense got overrated to some non blazer fans just bcs hes the type of dude who can get scrappy and aggressive and high effort on ball at times and thats more of what people notice than the off-ball stuff (and even with his effort he still wasnt too great on-ball either), it hides a lot of his other issues defensively, also i think ppl just wanted to put trent into that “3 and d” box when really at this point he only fits the first part
