The 1993 Giro was the 76th edition of the race. It started off in Porto Azzurro on 23 May with a split stage, with the first leg being a mass-start stage and the latter an individual time trial. The race ended on 13 June with a stage that stretched 166 km (103.1 mi) from Biella to Milan. Twenty teams entered the race, which was won by Miguel Induráin of the Banesto team. Second and third respectively were the Latvian Piotr Ugrumov and the Italian rider, Claudio Chiappucci. Indurain's victory in the 1993 Giro was his first step in completing the Giro - Tour double - winning the Giro and Tour in one calendar year - becoming the first rider to repeat this feat in consecutive years.
Moreno Argentin was the first rider to wear the race leader's maglia rosa after winning the opening stage. Argentin held that lead for ten more days before losing it to Miguel Induráin after the conclusion stage 10. Bruno Leali stole the lead away from Indurain after the race's eleventh leg and held it until the end of the fourteenth day of racing. Indurain gained the lead after mountainous stage 14 and then held it all the way to the Giro's finish in Milan.
Indurain became the first Spanish rider to win the Giro in consecutive years. Amongst the other classifications that the race awarded, Italian Adriano Baffi of Mercatone Uno-Zucchini-Medeghini won the points competition, Carrera Jeans-Tassoni's Claudio Chiappucci won the mountains classification, Lampre-Polti's Pavel Tonkov completed the Giro as the best rider aged 25 or younger in the general classification, finishing fifth overall, and Ján Svorada of Lampre-Polti won the intergiro competition. Lampre-Polti finished as the winners of the team classification, ranking each of the twenty teams contesting the race by lowest cumulative time. Ariostea finished as winners of the team points classification. #Cycling, #Sports, #Doping

I met Indurain, fairly briefly, at Futuroscope before the 1990 Tour, Couple days before the tour started, riders were cruising around the place and staying loose. Riders were gong through a gaping the fencing to get back to the buses, I met many of the pros of the day there. Indurain stopped to talk to someone and I offered my good luck in my best school boy Spanish, he gave me what appeared to be a genuine smile, nodded and rode off... Two things, how freaking tall he was and how skinny... and he carried this air of calmness about him, very centred

Lets face it... they were all on it. If your all doing it its a level playing field. You still have to put in the training to get there and you still have to race the stages. Not a level playing field. Some respond better, some take more risks, some have better doctors and more money to hire the best, some have more favor with the UCI, and some lose because they refuse to do it. "Level playing field" is a joke. What does training have to do with it? You can train a lot better on drugs.

Fignon said the same thing in his book...not too believable that the richest cyclists wouldn't have taken the best drugs when there was no risk of getting caught...remember that they were used to taking "stilulants" since turning pro.

@philiprice6961 Жыл бұрын
Let's be clear. In the early 90s EPO was undetectable. Fact. Throughout the history of pro-cycling PED use was rife, even when detectable. Can we reasonably believe that EPO was not widely used as soon as it became available, since not using it would mean almost certain failure? (remember that Delgado and by extension team Reynolds were nearly caught out in 1988). Lemond, I think, was a clean honest athlete who did not use EPO, was forced into overtraining which then ruined his (already compromised) health, and was robbed of several chances to win tours. The whole era was a tragedy and anyone involved should be ashamed of themselves. Indurain was a hugely talented rider and would probably have won tours and giros in a clean peloton. I don't believe he was clean, but I can't prove it, beyond noting that in a spanish language interview he said something to the effect of 'I did what I had to do'.
@Peakabike
@Peakabike Жыл бұрын
@@philiprice6961 Pre-EPO they all "did what they had to do", there's no way they could have competed otherwise. Now some like Lemond were never caught so you have to give them the benefit of the doubt, not so with Fignon who was caught at least twice for "speed", he fessed up in his book but of course said that was the only time he ever doped...right. It's actually pretty comical because for one of them he said he'd taken "speed" because his coach Alain Gallopin had just had a baby (or was about to have one) and couldn't accompany him on his training ride ! Doping was such a way of life for him that it didn't occur to him that anyone with a brain would be surprised that he would just have "speed" hanging around in his garage ;-) With EPO, I'm not sure, it's possible that Fignon and Lemond would have had doubts and not much to gain, it was after all scarier than just popping some pills, especially in the beginning.
