The 1984 Giro was the 67th running of the Giro. It started in Lucca, on 17 May, with a 5 km (3.1 mi) prologue and concluded in Verona, on 10 June, with a 42 km (26.1 mi) individual time trial. A total of 171 riders from nineteen teams entered the 22-stage race, that was won by Italian Francesco Moser of the Gis Gelati-Tuc Lu team, doped by Michele Ferrari. The second and third places were taken by Frenchman Laurent Fignon and Italian Moreno Argentin, respectively.
Amongst the other classifications that the race awarded, Urs Freuler of Atala-Campagnolo won the points classification, Fignon of Renault-Elf won the mountains classification, and Renault-Elf's Charly Mottet completed the Giro as the best neo-professional in the general classification, finishing twenty-first overall. Renault-Elf finishing as the winners of the team classification, ranking each of the twenty teams contesting the race by lowest cumulative time. The team points classification was won by Metauro Mobili-Pinarello. #Cycling, #Sports, #Doping

Back in the day, I might use a 12-26 freewheel to ride all day in the Sierras. 39/53 rings. Usually I was on a 12/21 or 12/23 in my smaller local mountains . Decades later Im still riding single speeds and fixed gears most often. Straight blocks are for pretty flat terrain.

I think there was a hint that Charly Mottet might have had assistance with his cycling. I read the Paul Kimmage book and he said Mottet was as clean as a whistle. Mottet would run out of gas much over a week of racing thanks to the lack of steroids. Hmmm...
@janscanulfsson9295
@janscanulfsson9295 Жыл бұрын
Mature GC Charly was super-clean by the standards of the day - prob. just iron injections, anti-oxidants, B12 - but I think he admitted to having taken amphetamines in crits and might have dabbled in other stuff in his very early days. As well as Kimmage there's Willy Voet's account of being stunned by just how clean Charly was when he left Uncle Cyrille and signed for RMO. It makes the Giro 2nd and 2 x TdF 4th all the more remarkable
@jerrychicken967
@jerrychicken967 Жыл бұрын
@@janscanulfsson9295 I think Kimmage said Mottet was a health freak for sure. He picked out Mottet in a book full of Naughtiness. No idea how anyone can validate but if so, Mottet could've been a dominant force in cycling in the late 80s but chose another path.
@janscanulfsson9295
@janscanulfsson9295 Жыл бұрын
Willy Voet said the whole RMO team was staggered by his dedication to 'faire le metier' in the cleanest way. Eating, sleeping, equipment choices, even the way he presented himself. His palmares is already impressive, but then you look at the placings and near-podium finishes and wonder what he could have achieved in a sport where everyone was tiring after ten days.

Great video. I knew that Moser's giro was not one of the most clear victory in sport history... Stelvio switch, the elicopter in the last stage and so on.... Anyway, in some way, I miss the days when at sporting events the home athletes were obviously helped by the organization. It Adds an epic and historical flavor to sporting challenges. Today we are all fans of great champions like Pogacar, Messi etc. But once upon a time a Frenchman couldn't win in Italy and a German couldn't do it in England. Bye

A memorable Giro edition, nomatter what. My first Grand Tour watching live, standing together with my parents and sister on an excellent small ramp in the country side on the stage from Chieti to Foggia. This just months after watching Joergen Leth's excellent documovie 'Stars and Water Carriers' first time. That the heroes' names were dishonored decades later (typically by Millenial 'explainers' not even born at the times) cannot take away my intense experiences. I'm not exactly the type to bow my head to the poisonous grip of woke cancel culture going on these years. Those were the years.
@venusfooltrap7371
@venusfooltrap7371 Жыл бұрын
My nostalgia for the racing of that era isn't spoiled by learning what was really going on. I too witnessed a grand tour from the roadside for the first time in the 80s. Those who moan about woke cancel culture and call for a return to a mythical golden age are living in a fragile fantasy world devoid of truth. The dishonour of the 'heroes' wasn't invented by 'milennial explainers'. It was always there. The 'explainers' merely bring it into the open, and so they should. We can still admire the spectacle and the daring acts of those who took part, whether clean, lightly doped or 'charged' to the eyeballs, and the corruption of the teams and organisers makes the whole thing even more intriguing.
