My experience is tube style frames are prone to rotting from the inside out. In upstate NY , the salt kills them. Also, with the temperature changes we experience, the insides of the tubes can condensate and lead to rot. I prefer an I beam or channel frame.

In NC you only need a class A license if over 26k GVWR, if you are not in commerce (for hire/CDL). Class A drivers license only requires you to take the safety portion of a CDL test. Other than that it's the same license as a class C. If the towing vehicle is licensed for farm use you are also exempt.
@michaeldankert1962 Жыл бұрын
In Michigan we have to go get a (F) endorsement on our license, then we can drive/haul anything in farming operations, as well as can your family/farm employees. The F endorsement requires a 60 question written exam with no driving test. Just FYI, the Secretary of State didn't even know the type F endorsement even existed until she looked it up. Lol

I have recently spoken with a compiance officer and he said that if the combined gvwr of the truck and trailer excedes 26,001lbs you need a cdl. I hold a class a witch allows me to drive anything up to 80k. I can pull a fifth wheel, goose neck, or bumper pull as long as the truck is rated for the weight i am pulling as well as the trailer. The cdl depends on the combination of the truck and trailer as well. If you excede the class c rating then you need to get a class b licence if you are only planning to use bumper pull or pintle ring trailers. If you want to pull goose neck or fifth wheel you have to have a class a licence as it goes by weight and the combination of truck and trailer. If you dont plan to pull anything over 26001lbs then you dont need a cdl, dot numbers, fmcsa sticker, or an ifta sticker. After your truck tag excedes 26001lbs youare subject to all fmcsa/dot rules and regulations.

Good stuff my brother. To the point with no fluff. Hell, you should have done the video!
@nickr88292 жыл бұрын
That's completely wrong, the type of trailer has nothing to do with the CDL class, only the weight. A vehicle over 26,000lbs GVWR towing a trailer under 10,000lbs GVWR is what a class B CDL covers. A class A CDL doesn't cover "up to 80,000lbs," it covers ANY vehicle over 26,000lbs GCWR towing a trailer over 10,000lbs GVWR.
@michaeldankert1962 Жыл бұрын
That's how I understand it. Nobody ever goes into detail when they describe the 10,001 lb rule. The DOT says if you have a GCWR of 26001 (AND) "KEY WORD HERE" Trailer load exceeding 10,001lb, then a CDL is required. It doesn't say (OR) a trailer load exceeding 10,001lb. So if you are below GCWR of 26,001lb, but are pulling over 10,001lb, you are still ok?
@mattsmith927011 ай бұрын
@@michaeldankert1962 From what I understand if the combo is under 26,001 the weight of the trailer doesn't matter, and you don't need a cdl. if the combo is over 26,001 and the trailer is under 10,001 that requires a B cdl. If the combo is over 26,001 and the trailer is over 10,001 that requires a class A cdl. Also each state has its own rules.

Our small 3000-5000kg payload delivery trucks (NZ) have scissor lift mechanisms. We've never had a problem with them. Like anything it comes down to engineering. Pushing the 26k barrier need not be the hassle you are making it out to be. 1) a VAST majority, if not all, of 3/4 tons can haul a 16k trailer without breaking the 26k barrier. Some 1 tons can as well. 2) if buying new, have it down-rated. If you have a 10,100 GVWR truck, instead of limiting your self to a 14 trailer, get a 16k trailer and have it down-rated from the manufacturer if buying new. That will give you the heavier duty axle, tires and frame without breaking the 26k barrier. Just don't haul over the rated value on the road. I had my trailer manufacturer rate my enclosed 10k trailer to 9,990 lbs on the manufacturer's tag, to keep it under 10k. In retrospect, I am not sure what I gained other than skipping the reflective tape on the side, but all I lost was 10lbs of legal payload and a minute on the phone. On the other hand, if like the example above, you are only pushing the CDL-A barrier by 100 lbs, you could have a whole lot more of an impact. Asking the mfg to put a lower number on the paperwork and ID plate is an easy way around it.

Now my math says that’s 36,500 gcwr I literally went to the DOT with my CDL permit. I did even show the guy in the book where it said a GCWR over 26k lb And they would not let me take the driving test for a CDL. They said the truck and trailer did not meet the requirements to have a CDL so the test couldn’t be taken in it. I see it this way if they won’t let me take the test with my truck and trailer how can they write me a ticket. I got the DOT guys name and phone number in case I was pulled over. We do a lot of drainage problems around houses and we end up digging out a bunch of shrubs and bushes to haul of and sometimes excess top soil. We also usually dig down a few feet from the top of their basement and paint the block with a tar based sealer and add heavy plastic and tie in gutter drains and a second higher up French drain. So we need to haul gravel and off huge bushes, the tall wall trailers are good for that but I'm not sure about topsoil and limestone. We haul with a 08 dodge 3500 dually 6.7 Cummins and 6 speed manual.

26,001 lbs gross combined weight rating(gcwr) is class A cdl IF the towed vehicle(s) have a 10,000lbs or greater gross vehicle weight rating(gvwr). A single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001lbs or greater or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000lbs gvwr is class B cdl. That is directly from the CDL handbook in the chart that shows which license you need. A 3/4 ton truck rated at 10k can pull a 16k trailer without a cdl. GCWR is not an estimate. Its literally the exact ratings. If you are at 26k GCWR, that is not a commercial vehicle. 26,001 is the start of commercial vehicles. There are two situations where a 10,001 and over trailer GVWR apply. First is with a GCWR over 26k. If your GCWR is over 26k and your trailer GVWR is over 10k, you need a Class A CDL. If your GCWR is over 26k but your trailer GVWR is 10k or under, you need a class b CDL. Second situation. Anyone with a trailer which the GVWR is over 10k needs a medical examiner card. This is not a CDL but a doctor saying youre medically fit to tow heavy loads. The MEC applies to all trailers over 10k GVWR, even if your GCWR is 26k or under.

Couple of things to note: One on the single front cylinder it is susceptible to tipping to the side if you are on a slight incline to the left or right, two, You can only haul 10000 lbs without a CDL and if you get weighed by the state you wont like the fine they issue.
@KI4HOK4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the state, Florida is straight to the 26,000lbs. Also if it is personal use it is the state the vehicle is tagged in that defines the rules that apply. As a FL resident I can haul 26,000 anywhere in the US as long as it is personal use.

The advantages of a telescoping, front mounted cylinder out weighs the disadvantages. I’ve hauled over two hundred tons in my 14K 14’ dump trailer without any problems. Don’t rely on your equipment to keep you out of trouble, rely on yourself to stay away from trouble.
@BrianSimmons Жыл бұрын
I suppose it depends on your state, but in most states you are fine to tow a trailer that weighs more than 10k without a CDL as long as the total GVWR of the truck + trailer is 26,000 pounds or less. (This is the combination of the GVWR "sticker" values of both the truck and trailer). The 10k "limit" comes into play in two places and it is common for people to misunderstand it. First - if your GVWR of the truck and trailer is 26,001 or more, then if you use a trailer with a 10,0001 or higher GVWR you'll need a Class A CDL. If your total GWVR of the truck and trailer is 26,001 or more, but the trailer GVWR is 10k or less, then you'll need a Class B CDL. Second - you may need a DOT number if your GVWR is grater than 10k AND you are involved in interstate commerce (ie you travel out of your home state). Of course some states may require a DOT number even for intrastate commerce.

I don't know why there's so much confusion about needing a CDL. It's pretty simple if you just read the rules. Find the GVWR on your truck. It's usually on a sticker inside the driver's door. Then find the GVWR of the trailer. It's usually on a sticker on the tongue. Add both GVWR numbers together, then answer these two questions. 1. Do both GVWR numbers together equal 26,001 or greater? 2. Is the GVWR of the trailer 10,001 lbs or greater? If you answered yes to both questions, you will need a Class A CDL.

Class A CDL covers any combination vehicle weight ratings provided you don’t have the restrictions on it for air brakes and manual...ect. Class B CDL is for a single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 lbs or more, think tandem axle trucks, dumptrucks, large flatbeds, ect.
