If I have a choice, I always place the binder on the curbside of the trailer so if I must stop on the side of the road to check or tighten a binder, I'm not subject to passing vehicles.

Excellent video, I'm a career oversize carrier, the way you did it is 100% legal, the oblong hole you used in the lift arm is also used with a T-hook, that eliminates the side load on your hook, again great video, Just wanted to throw that in. All the best.

I can tell being a heavy equipment hauler, I always hit the chains with a breaker bar/pipe to make sure they are tight. A lot of time you think it's tight, be there is actually a "knot" in the chains, and the first bump you hit, you get slack in the chains. You will be surprised how often you think your chains are tight but they are not. You want have to pull over and check anymore doing this, but you should still check them when you stop for something else

You should get used to securing your load on the passenger side of your trailer. That way you aren't out in traffic messing with ratchet straps or binders when they loosen up.

According to the J.J. Keller "Cargo Securment Handbook For Drivers" the minimum requirements of any cargo securment system are as follows: 80% of the cargo's weight being secured against the cargo moving forward. 50% of the cargo's weight being secured against the cargo moving rearwards. 50% of the cargo's weight being secured against lateral (sideways) movement (the cargo moving in the direction towards each side). 20% of the cargo's weight being secured against the cargo being moved in an upwards direction vertically. The NACM "Welded Steel Chain Specifications" (a free PDF) is the definitive source on the working load limits of welded steel chains based on their grade and thickness, (there's a chart to reference). A common myth is that 1 chain is good to secure 10,000 lbs of a load. No Grade 70 (G-70) (gold colored) transport chain under 1/2 inch in diameter/thickness is manufactured with a 10,000 lb. working load limit. It's also a good idea to keep the weld on the chain facing toward the opening of the hook. The chain link can snap if the weld is facing toward the inside of the hook due to the pressure being put on that weld. The outside of the hook should face away from the cargo when possible, so if the cargo shifts it pushes the hook into the chain and the chain remains connected. For chain binders, consult the manufacturer for their intended working load limit. When you use multiple items in a securment system (including the anchor point on the vehicle), the system is only as strong as the item with the lowest working load limit. The best practice is to use the manuals accredited by DOT compliance consultanting firms such as J.J. Keller, the standards of NACM (the National Association of Chain Manufacturers), and a calculator to determine the forces and chains/straps needed. At the end of the day, once it is driven off private property the driver becomes legally responsible for anything that goes wrong with the load securment, even if someone else loaded it. Criminal negligence is a stupid thing to be in prison for. Let's keep everyone's Grandma's safe when they drive next to us on the road.

When citing those percentages for tie down strngth, are they using the breaking strength, WLL, or half of WLL?

Is is recommended the tie down chain is placed completely around the outside of the stake pocket and the chain is hooked to itself forming a teardrop .

Would you need an additional chain for the bucket on your loader? If the combined lenght of the unit with bucket is over 10ft, do you need a 3rd chain? Like you mention at the end ove the video this info is hard to find in one place and I have seen that as part of the 393.100. Thanks and nice vid.

I think there is language in the section about tying down equipment that priorize pulling in 4 directions. The rule for tie down count per length is in the section about bulk materials.

On equipment under 10,000lbs, could you use two chains without binders on the rear, with chain and binders on the front to tighten? I understand you cannot do this with heavy machinery over 10,000lbs, but I can't find info on under 10,000lbs.
@ExcavationRevelation6 ай бұрын
Great question! I would recommend putting a binder in the front AND one in the back to be covered for sure. I think technically, having just a chain in the back counts as a tie-down if it is tightly securing the machine.
@maxenra4 ай бұрын
No. You need an adjustable securement device on each tiedown. If you have only one on two different tiedowns, if something were to happen to the one, that renders the other useless. Two chains is fine for under 10k, but two binders are needed as well- pulling in opposite directions.

All load ratings specified by the manufacturers are straight pull. None of yours are straight, and that one on the front in that oblong hole? Yikes, that killed whatever rating that turn buckle had. Consult a load master for aircraft handbook before advising others.
