I'm pretty sure that practically no native speaker of English in any country says "so to say" as a collocation phrase. Everybody says "so to speak" in such situations.

I cannot believe that anyone would really think Luca's English sucks. They seem to be trolls who are jealous of Luca and what he achieved. They probably speak only English, and likely aren't that great at it either. Since I started learning languages, I became VERY aware of the awkward sentences and grammar mistakes native speakers often make. Yet no one highjacks their videos and says "English is your native language but you suck at it". We need to acknowledged that being a native speaker doesn't mean that you speak the language well. Seriously, the number of people I've come across who don't know how to use adverbs and adjectives and AREN'T deep Southern or anything. And most don't know how to use who and whom correctly. It only seems to be acceptable to correct native speaking children, not adults. If you go to a writing exchange forum for English speakers, you'll see how they cannot agree on what is correct and a lot of times, it'll be about regional differences.

However he has shared, and still does, a lot of info and motivation through this channel that I find hard to believe it only has 60 thousand subscribers. I've seen very silly channels based on entertainment with much more. I imagine to learn languages is not very popular after all, eve though speaking them is a great skill. I'm learning Maltese. For a while, I kept inserting Maltese words into the conversation, while speaking Spanish, which I've spoken for over 50 years, with my neighbors. This confusion stopped after I stepped up my studies of Maltese history, culture, and cooking, with readings and videos in Maltese. It makes sense now.

Thanks for these tips. This is happening to me know because I've learned Spanish to a intermediate level, but recently I've been dedicating my time learning Chinese, and I tried to talk Spanish on the odd occasions but Chinese keeps on coming to my mind. I also noticed that it feels like my brain is working too hard when trying to recall Spanish. So the tip is too also passively keep up with practicing Spanish 👍🏾

Oh, I can relate to this so much. I have been struggling because french takes over whenever I try to speak Italian (in my head, because I have no one to talk to face to face just yet) and I tend to use il instead of lui, mais instead of ma and little things like that but no matter how small they are, they mess up with my head so bad. It does not happen that often, it only happens when I try to switch from one language to the other very quickly. I can definitely see your point, the only way to increase your retrieval capacity is to use the other language more often and that is what I am going to do because that feeling when you realize you are mixing two languages is kinda like having a fridge inside your brain, and the fridge is falling down the stairs on a 10 story building. Not very fun. Thank you for the insight Luca, your advice is always useful.

I fully agree with the fact that our behaviour changes depending on the language we are communicating with. In my case, this also applies to the way I use my phone's keyboard. I'm a native French speaker so using an AZERTY keyboard but as soon as I start texting in English or German (so changing to a QWERTY keyboard), I don't make more typing mistakes as my brain adapted itself and knows that the keyboard isn't the same so I don't confuse letters even while typing quickly

I really resonated with your comments in this video about having a particular personality for each language that you speak. One thing I often think about is that each language that I speak itself carries a personality with it. French, for example, is very lyrical and expressive. So when I speak French, I feel fluid and passionate. Contrast that with German. No further comment necessary! QED.

I've always liked your videos. I don't usually have issues mixing up my languages but I noticed that when it does happen, it usually happens when I have to switch in that moment (Spanish to Portuguese or Spanish to French). For instance, it would happen sometimes if I went from French class to Spanish class or if I passed someone in the hall who spoke to me in Spanish but then a couple of seconds later, I ran into someone who said hello to me in French

This is fascinating. I agree so much. I have a slightly different voice for each of my languages (and I'll admit it sometimes I give myself a name in that language too - I only use it in my head!). I often in the early stages latch on to a native speaker who has a voice I like and who speaks in a way I like and try to use him as my model. I also believe I have slightly different personalities too due to things I have picked up in different countries. I actually believe I can argue more in Russian than I can in my native language English because Russians use that kind of language more than the over-polite English. Same with Spanish. But I am pretty placid speaking Finnish. You don't hear many (sober) Finns shouting! Interesting you mentioned mixing up Polish and Russian. I don't do that so much because Russian sounds so different and I did it at university so I think it's in too deep BUT I do get Polish mixed up with Czech and Slovak. It's a thing with the Slavonic languages that they can be so similar that you can passively understand quite a lot when you first start a new one so you need to make a BIG effort to learn the vocabulary properly or you end up speaking a weird Slavonic hybrid.

In other words, don’t just learn the language, integrate into the culture as much as you can. Emotional experiences strengthen memory connections, which will form kind of a mental pocket for that language.

Some languages like Spanish and Italian are so similar in terms of phonology, syntax and orthography that it gets really hard to compartmentalize and I've heard even native speakers tend to mix up a bit in such cases. Did you have such problems while learning Spanish or maybe Portuguese? Thanks for the video so much

I totally agree with what you said, and I have been doing the same thing for the past couple of years. However, I must admit that learning Italian before fortifying my Spanish totally ruined the latter. It got so bad that I couldn't tell which language is which. So I decided to completely hold of on the Italian till Spanish is embedded in my subconscious brain. It appears to be easier to learn languages from different groups at the same time than similar ones! Am I right or is there something I can do to fix this? Another question, how many languages must one speak before they can be called a polyglot? :)

Is it possible that this tendency to develop, as it were, a different personality, varies greatly from one person to another? If it does, will it then be observed that people whose personalities are more consistent across languages mix languages up more? In principle, one could conduct an experiment to investigate, but it would be brutally difficult to control for all the different variables. Either way, it is an interesting topic. Surely the main factor is the similarity of the languages in question?

Very interesting video , I'm a native spanish speaker & until now iam realizing why people i work for many years in the hotel industry over the years would tell me how my facial expressions change every time i would switch from spanish to italian which in fact was my third language my hands &my whole attitude would change my italian friends julianna armenti &lina Rossellini would notice how my tone of voice how passionate i was about anything i would do or say in italian,same in portuguese from brasil or french a native french speaker Laura rousselle used to say that when i speak french to her i had such a hard time avec la pronunciation i(laura used to say) you twist your mouth & look like a walking stick !!! También es importante cuánto tiempo pasaste con el idioma que ya hablas bien. Por ejemplo en tu caso ¿crees que puedes mezclar español cuando hablas francés? Aunque hablas ruso a un nivel alucinante, el hecho de que hayas vivido tu vida a través del francés tantos años( y el hecho de que practicaste francés mucho más que ruso, porque viviste en Francia) dudo que pueda mezclar el francés con ningún otro idioma. As there are actually some other articles arguing that the change of personality is not necessarily due to language shift but instead the situations of using the language. i.e. Imagine yourself talking to your boss and then to your friends, the language used and personality shown would be just different. This saying makes sense to me but I really think it's true that language has and will cause the change of personality (my own experience tries to agree on that too), only that I don't know what's the difference between the personality change in different situations and that in different languages?

Nosotros nativos usamos preguntas que van con cada caso para aprender ellos (se aprende todas preguntas juntos con cada caso). Si usted puede usar un libro escrito para ninos de la escuela primaria o alguna pagina web para ninos ruosos se puede ver estas preguntas. Es lo mismo en mi segunda lengua materna- el polaco.Y se puede usar tambien para aprender el aleman. Pensar no en casos pero en los casos como respuestas a esas preguntas que van con cada caso es la manera mas logica y natural de aprendizaje. Me parece que esto puede ser el caso de todos lenguas slavicas.

Luca Lampariello I messed up my FLUENT and NATIVE Language of English. With learning some spanish, german. I know mispronounce english a lot! I need to learn what you managed. Sometimes I mix with spanish/english/german when I trying to convo with someone. Also many words mean VERY different things. Like Russian Suka in Spanish means sugar but a very rude word in Russian. Its frustrating. The left thing when asking an Russian worker who is female about the Suka. LOL

For me it's similar that languages are separated by personality, but I find more so that my current language of thought is a reflection of my mood and that, sometimes, there is a certain phrase I'd like to use to express myself to someone that doesn't speak the language I'd like to express it in, and the language we converse in has no equivalent, and I'm unable to express myself. As ironic as it may be, in this sense, language is isolating. Do you ever feel like this? Do you ever feel that people cannot know who you are because your personality is split in so many ways that they cannot understand? If so, how do you deal with something like this?

Charlotte Gardyn what happens is that both spanish and portuguese have the same grammar at 89% approximately, but the pronunciation is too different, so you should learn them with audiobooks, I think.

I would say its best if you chose a British accent. Although America is by far the most powerful Anglophone country in the world, the British accent is the prestige accent of our language. When a speaker speaks with say received pronunciation for example, almost reflexively it, the speaker is perceived to be well spoken, articulate, intelligent. Very few if any real British people naturally speak in received pronunciation. So unless you want to do only business and hang with the rich, I wouldn't recommend RP. If you choose British, "standard" British that isn't RP works better. Sometimes one or the other is easier to learn based on a lot of things, including native language. For speakers of German or Russian American often seems easier while British often seems easier for speakers of Chinese or French. For Italian like Luca, American might also be easier. Of course it also varies from person to person. Some people don't fit the mold. I'd choose whatever you're more likely to master unless you really love the other one more. Standard British and American are both easy to understand worldwide, so you can't go wrong.

I speak a whole bunch of languages, but I don't feel having many personalities. My personality kinda stretches over the thinking modes I have. So I would say we polyglots have several modes of thinking, but our inner intrinsic core, identity, self - no matter how we call it - remains the same. Personality of human beings does not have a lingual character.

I have a problem where I speak mono-lingual (English) but once I hear another language (or an accent that brings to mind another language) my brain flips over to multi-lingual. Then all words that mean the same thing become interchangeable and I can't remember how to say a word (for instance "thank you" or "what?") in the language I'm speaking. All my coworkers are used to me just saying "danke/hvala/gracias" when they hand me something, or "que/quoi/como?" when I need them to repeat themselves. Because that just pops out right away, and I have to pause and sort through all of the synonyms of "thank you" in my head until I can get to English again. Probably my ADHD. ;p

I'm a native American English speaker. Question re: your approach to English: given all the regional variants, and the fact that pretty much every English vowel is spoken as a diphthong, how to you figure out what source to trust for pronunciation? Listening to your American English, I'd call your accent 98% native quality, but there are a few words that keep bugging me, e.g. it sounds like you're saying "lenguage" instead of "language" ("a" should be broader). (Hmmm, maybe that's a British vowel creeping in?) The other challenge to achieve that ultimate native quality is figuring out the right balance between "more precise than a true native" versus "too affectedly informal". E.g. I know of one near-native who is always dropping the "g" from "ing" words; drives me crazy. Best regards!
