I don't wish to argue, but I think learning multiple languages simultaneously can be advantageous if you're strategic. I think it's a case of 'a rising tide raises all boats'. I've found it useful, if not essential, to stop thinking about languages as different 'subjects', like at school, and instead see them as all being related, which they are. Exploring the similarities and differences between them amplifies your learning. Compare and contrast. Learn about the history of each language. Contemplate language maps. Identify which sounds are used in multiple languages. Learn about language families and the most common alphabets. If you can mentally keep each language in it's geographical and historical context, you won't mix them up.

Masagin You wrote exactly what I was thinking! I don't know yet if this method will work for me, because I've just decided to use it to study my 4th and 5th languages and even more, if I can. I too believe that a comparative approach to languages is a good strategy, because we can say that it really is only one, big subject, that is communication. For me is easy to see patterns and links between them. Few days ago I was curious about Kiswahili and I watched some videos of basic grammar; when they explained the sentence structure I couldn't help but thinking how different it was from evertything that I learned before, but also similar in some aspects. Same when I saw the alphabet. I have to say that having studied ancient Greek and Latin at school (Italian students in classical secondary schools do them) helps me a lot with this process!

I agree with this when I was in choir we had to learn Celtic,Italian,Latin Spanish,German, and know about the piece of music we where learning and the composer (if known) so lots of study on culture and pronunciation of the languages. Now I couldn’t speak these languages fluently we only had time to learn the lyrics of the piece. So I very much think it’s possible to learn multiple languages. My Tia came to the United States and became a citizen she speaks 4 languages and she learned 2 languages at the same time when she came to America Spanish and English. She was from Italy.

My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Thanks to the author of the channel for this interesting video! Good luck to everyone who studies a foreign language and wants to realize their full potential!

I respect Luca's opinion however I will say if you plan on spending more than 2 years with one language you can possibly learn more. I'm currently studying four languages but i plan to stay with them for at least 3 years, probably longer. I study Spanish and Mandarin on M - Thurs (Spanish is easy to pick up as I studied it already in school), and I study French and Egyptian Arabic on Fri - Sun (although its only 3 days...2 of them are on the weekend so i have extra time). Although my progress is slow the benefit is that I get to enjoy speaking 4 languages instead of just 2 and then waiting 2 years for the others...

I believe that some people are just predisposed to learning languages easily. Of course most believe it's easier when you're a kid to learn something new, but that point really hit home when my daughter started learning Japanese 5 years ago, close to the time I began learning Cree. I added French to her studies a year later and she became fluent in both languages within 4 years, while I've only recently gained confidence in speaking Cree publicly.

Hey Luca, thankyou for this video! I'm currently doing a degree in French + Chinese but aside from those I have been learning Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Russian as a hobby. Although I very much want to learn them I'll take your advice and stick only to French and Chinese for the next three years. Grazie!

On average, I spend a couple of weeks on one language and I move on to another, and then return to it again a few weeks later. I like your approach: it is better to learn things properly at the beginning - you do not have to rush and learn a language in 3 months! :) My mother tongue is Finnish. At school and at the university (when studying linguistics) I got quite a good "core" in English and Swedish. I have been using English a lot, so it is my best foreign language, but I have not been using Swedish too much, which is a pity - now I am trying to activate it. I am homeschooling my children, and it is a continuing challenge to keep up my own language skills and get better all the time! During my studies I also had to take short courses in German (I had learnt it at school for 3 years, too), Hungarian and Estonian, and I used to learn Polish and Russian just for fun. All this happened 20 - 30 years ago, so I have forgotten most of what I learnt - but I have decided to revive my skills in all those languages and even study further! I think I will start with Russian; one day I watched a Russian film on KZbin and I found I still understood some words here and there... By the way, Russian is pronounced almost the same way it is written (you just have to learn the phonetic value of the letters, like in Finnish). My teenage son wants to learn Russian, too, so we can study together! Some weeks ago I started learning Irish, which is fortunately quite different from Russian! I had dreamt about it for about 30 years, but I had always thought I already had enough (or too many...) languages to keep up. But when you are over 50 you just have to make your dreams true if you are ever going to do it! I am really thankful for your tips about learning more than one language at a time!

It's impossible to learn a language in 90 days unless you're a genius and can recall everything without repetition. The most challenge part is to be able to retrieve the vocabulary and sentences of the cuff when you're giving a speech. Maintaining a language takes a lot of time. I have learnt 4 foreign languages in the last 8 years. Do I speak all the languages well? No, I don't. I get by, or at least I have a decent level to make myself understood. Yeah, another critical factor is your mother tongue or maybe more than one. I have two native languages. If you stop using them, you will lose part of them as well.

I'm doing 4 at the moment (Chinese, German, French & Spanish), but almost every word is revision and next to nothing (beyond vocab) is new. However, when learning two new languages in the 'building the core 'stage, they need to be really quite different. More would indeed be hard, but once the core is there, you can safely increase. I totally agree about the problem of being in too much of a hurry and the 'Learn X in a Week' publishing craze has done nothing to help!. Thanks for the good vid!

I speak French and German to like a weak C1/strong B2, and I've been been learning Spanish for about a year. I'd say I'm a B1. I'm gonna start Italian when the new year starts :) I hope 1 year and B1 is enough Spanish to not mess it up with Italian.

I’m about to learn 13 languages at the same time because why not? I haven’t started yet because I’m thinking of how I can learn that many at once. So far I have come up with a notebook method where I have categories. For example; this one page is for greetings and the greetings page is located in the beginners section of the notebook. On the greetings page the languages will be separated via whether they are a Romance language, a Slavic language, a Germanic language, or a Semitic language and if I have multiples of one category language then they will be separated from each other to avoid confusion. I will also be using Anki flash cards. I have so much time because I’m not in school or have a job due to my illness. During this time I will try to speak zero English so I can practice the languages and not revert or rely on my mother tongue for help.

I think ur right about the core, im going to study Turkish for a couple months to a year before doing anything else.. I have a base in Spanish, so I think that will be my third language after Turkish

Of course it's OK! My humble opinion is that, once you have the core in place, then you can safely branch out to a new language. To be honest, you can really do as many as you like and you don't need anyone's permission. Luca makes some excellent points, but at the end of the day, YOU must decide and if you take on Polish and then find it too much, you can always drop it again, no?=)

Well, I think the short answer would be that, if you're learning some 1 foreign language, you're already learning 2 languages at a time, given that languages are always developing and you also learn more about your native language everyday. And when you "finish" your 2nd language, the same rule applies, so you'll start learning 3 languages at a time. So, in reality, we're always learning, the only difference is the levels at which you'd put yourself at each of them.

I find it hard to stick to just 2 languages. I try to follow Robin Macpherson 3-tiered approach. You have 2 languages every day, then you alternate the next day. I do a 3rd language on the 3rd day. I dont go as fast, but I am getting more accomplished, I feel.

Hi, Luca, thx so much for sharing this video with us. The ideas you mentioned are so constructive and helpful. Just wonder whether you make other videos about how you study a language specifically, i mean, reading guiding textbooks, reciting sentences, stuff like that :p

I agree with the fact that it is better to not study similar languages at the same time. I have studied Japanese for the past several years, but I recently took up Korean within the past two years, and I was using japanese-korean resources at the time. These two languages are similar enough that the grammar I had already internalized for Japanese slightly conflicted with what I was learning about Korean.

@poliglotta80 I've just watched your video and I agree with you when you use the word "absorbe" to explain the process that led you to acquire a native-speaker accent. I've been working in Paris for two years and I feel proud of my Parisian accent altough I find it quite heavy and "flooded", as speakers' voices are often low and flat.

I found your tips and opinion very helpful. Since I am older, I don't have the time to learn 2 languages at once every two years. I already speak Spanish. I started with Port. which was easier for me, although confusing at the same time. After 6 months I started French. Then after a year, I started Italian. I mix up Port and Italian a lot and sometimes throw in a few words without thinking of Spanish into Italian. I am getting better at switching without a problem as time goes on. I study all 3 a week though. I started Russian a couple of weeks ago and then gave up the idea. It was too much pressure. All of my languages are related which helps and hurts. I do know that I would be a lot more fluent in each if I did them one at a time. However, I can get around with all of them and I am happy with that. It seems like I have a path in my mind and I need to find the path to switch and once I find it, I am "good to go". I agree if you have the time, it is better to stick to one or 2 that are very different. I don't have the luxury of time. I started Spanish when I was young so it is not an issue. I wish I had continued then but I waited so now, I try to do as much as I can, as I love learning different languages.

I've been working on a comparison with Reader's Digest multilingual dictionary edition which includes Portuguese - Spanish - French - Italian - English - German. And it makes a lot of sense how the words are formed... or which words are related, or borrowed, or variables... I plan to work on something for the polyglot community concerning this comparison.

This helps alot! I like to study languages, and I can easily get absorbed in studying 8 languages. I can see that I need to focus on just 2 but that will be difficult. I read , write, and speak Russian, so I want to be fluent in Russian. I am learning French, and I am teaching the grandchildren Spanish. I also study ancient Greek, but not nearly enough. So the list goes on. So I really do appreciate Lisa's words of wisdom.

It's fine if you study Ancient Greek at the same time as any other modern language for the sole purpose of reading texts as you will likely focus on one, at most two skills (reading + writing) with Latin and therefore the language won't demand as much time and immersion from you as a modern language. I'm learning Italian + Latin at the same time; the former is already at an advanced intermediate level and the latter at a basic level...despite their similarities there's no interference between them as Latin will only be used passively to read and my brain will not make the effort to look for words in latin to try to speak them. Italian IS/WILL be for speaking and therefore that clear separation and compartmentalization of activities (one language only for reading as opposed to another language for speaking/hearing) prevents any kind of interference. I feel like Italian even at an advanced level plus Latin is already more than enough and even though I'd like to learn other languages, I rationally can clearly see that to learn more than two languages is overkill. Even with not having to speak/listen to Latin I feel like I have more than enough on my plate as it is with the grammatical complexities of Latin.

Thank you for replying to my response about Greek. I have the New Testament in Greek, and also The Little Prince in Ancient Greek, which I just purchased. I also have something by Plato. Since I am a senior, it doesn't get into my brain as fast now. I do think I'm better at ancient Greek than modern Greek, however. I do try Latin on occasion, but not regularly. Best wishes on all your language studies.

Thanks Luca, great video as usual :-) I'm currently dusting off my Spanish with Lingoda while progressing with French and German. Have to say not easy to manage the time, but well, let's see what comes out of this madness. I kinda abandoned my Italian for a while, only watch TG everyday. I will be extremely sad if one day my Italian devolves back to Stone Age :-(((

In Finland, we learn 2 - 4 foreign languages at school. However, we never start two new languages at the same time. Now, as an adult, I am learning three languages at the same time: Polish, Croatian, and Turkish. Polish and Croatian are similar. With both of them, I am already at intermediate level. I often tend to blend them, but not as badly as earlier. I need both of them, so I have no choice. I find it helpful to use a totally different method for Polish (audio books), compared to Croatian (Anki and newspaper articles). In addition, I am learning Turkish with DuoLingo just for fun. There is no risk of blending it with the Slavic languages.

Tjänare Luca! First of all I would like to tell that your videos have been inspiring me with my "language journey" and just after few weeks i've noticed that the methods I've been using, which are yours, have made it all so much easier. So thank you for these videos! I've been learning modern greek for a while, and I would like to improve my spanish at the same time. I was wondering if it really is a good idea to learn those two languages at the same time? Or are they too similar? Thank you!

Astonishing American accent! I'd like to ask you a question: Did you choose to sound like a native American or did it just come out naturally as more as you learnt it? As you could easily guess, BE rules of pronunciation are almost always taught in Italian schools and that's the way I learnt it. I can't even end a sentence picking up the standard AE accent.

Learning two languages at the same time: Something I want to do for the sake that I love to learn languages. I learnt korean Hangul, thinking that I would learn Korean, although some months ago I quitted looking for Korean learning resources; ultimately I'm more into Icelandic language, and I think I will accompany it with learning Italian or keeping learning Turkish (a language I was learning time ago) PD: Your video is good, and unavoidably, I had to subscribe to your channel... You're right, learning two languages at the same time is a challenge, nevertheless, it's been a year since I started french and italian (very related languages) and I consider I've had a pretty significant process, because it is easier for you to associate and memorize words from each language, and you link one feeling to both languages at a time. I would really like to know your opinion about this.
