I went to Paris for the first time last year, and loved it. The people were so kind and friendly to me. I was on my own and felt very safe. I am going back in a couple months. Every time I go to Europe, I really do my best to blend in and be respectful.

I think you should push your lawmakers to make your country safer instead of talking how to dress so we are not robbed. Tourist should be able to dress how they please and not "camouflage " .Tourism brings big money to Europe .

And put your valuable tings in your deepest zip pocket. Anyway we can tell by accent if you from europe or not or tourist or not. And Europe is safe just pick pocket is an issue sometimes.

I watch a lot of videos on this topic because I travel alone so much, and this one is really great! I’m so glad you mentioned the fact that people are more likely to be targeted if they have logos. The wealthiest people I know do not wear obvious logos and definitely wear things with understated elegance, and that’s in Europe and the US and Canada. They do not want people to know they have money, and they’re never targeted. Brilliant advice, Alice! Thank you.

Definitely agree with this! I went to Paris in the fall, I wanted to bring only a small amount of clothes, so I did black leather ankle boots, black tweed pants, a black leather crossbody (APC), a tan trench coat, and navy, maroon, beige, and red tshirts. It was really easy and I felt like I blended in MUCH more than the first time I visited Paris. Speaking even basic French will help sooo much as well!

Save yourself money and go for niche or lesser known brands. Alice is a fashionista so I presume her world revolves around all fashion; I imagine she might accessorize with high end items when attending really nice social gatherings rather than just walking from point A to Point B in Paris…. For us folks looking to make the most of what we have, keep it simple. Unless you want to splurge! Then go for it!

I like a leather small to medium shoulder bag, I don’t really like wearing cross-bodies because they cross my neck, irritating the skin. It’s getting harder and harder to find good shoulder bags, they’re nearly all cross-body these days. I think a handheld bag could be very easily pulled away by a stronger person, plus I like being hands-free.
@edennis8578
@edennis8578 22 күн бұрын
Well, as she pointed out, it depends on whether you want to get robbed or not. Hey, it's your choice. If you wear a hand-held bag, the thing is to carry it in front of you, not at the side. Thieves tend to run up from behind; it's hard for them to grab something that they can't see. For myself, when I'm walking around, I don't carry anything more than I absolutely need, so a wrist bag or a small clutch is enough. Carry it in front of you. I don't attract thieves; maybe they think a small bag isn't worth stealing.

I live in the US, in New England, and I don’t dress like the average American. My style is classic, understated elegance. I was brought up to dress this way as a sign of respect for oneself and others. I had no idea at the time that my mother was teaching me was to dress à la Parisienne. Not all Americans dress in athletic wear as daily clothing. I grew up in Boston, in an urban environment, and that greatly affected our choice of clothing. I moved to a bordering state, and the people here dress much more casually, as a rule. People always say that I look so nice. and I wonder why they don’t put forth the effort into making themselves look their best.

Really all of Alice's advice is good for the US too. Looking elegant is always appropriate, no matter where you are. I'm an American and I think most Americans would see Alice here and admire her look and style. I keep hoping the gym clothes/baseball cap look will fade here.

@@1marianne I dont undestand why the classic style must to be pushed down the other. They are equal. Self expressing. The world would be very boring if we uniformizated only with classic fashion. Merci beaucoup for all the advice and suggestions. My style is low-key. I always go for the quiet, casual chic look unless the occasion calls for a more formal attire, then it's a simple elegant outfit. Some people think you have to spend a fortune to look nice, but there are so many options that are casual chic, yet elegant, and do not cost as much. Would you please do a video where you showcase 2 different outfits for going to the Louvre, Palais Garnier, Sacre-Coeur, Versailles, picnic by La Tour Eiffel and Jardin du Luxembourg, and a Seine dinner cruise? I have my own ideas, but I am always looking for new things to polish my look. Merci et passe une belle journée!

I don’t wear these things at home in the US, either! I especially hate the black or gray tight, polyester gym outfits that everyone wears everywhere, it’s almost a national uniform. Most people never go to gyms or even go on walks, anyway. There’s nothing comfortable at all about all that super-tight and sweaty poly and spandex. If I had to wear those, I would never get dressed at all! I much prefer tailored clothes in natural fibers and lighter colors, mostly. I would never wear a cliche’ beret in Paris, either, but especially in warm weather. I used to wear wool berets for my daily winter commute, because I don’t like sock hats with my corporate wool overcoats, but the Monica Lewinsky scandal ruined them for me. Even though I wore them for years before, everyone started saying things like “trying to catch a president?” No thanks! Parisian fashion has always been my inspiration since working with two beautiful Parisienne colleagues forty years ago, they always looked so great.

I keep my crossbody on and in my lap while I eat. I don’t wear anything anyone would want to steal, including my engagement ring, etc. Specifically in churches, it’s disrespectful to wear hats, sleeveless tops and short bottoms. There are signs at the door for all of them asking you not to. Like it or not, you are treated better when you are dressed better. True everywhere in the world.

What should I carry? I’m a guy. I’m Andrew. As far as shoes and attire go … are chelsea boots ok? What about chinos and a button up shirt with a sweater when appropriate? What type of hat is ok to wear? I shave my head. So, I need to protect it both from the cold and sun respectively.

Go! It’s probably just as safe in most cities in Europe as it is in most cities in the US, maybe even safer. I’ve been more uncomfortable in more US cities in my life than I ever have in European cities. Tip: There is a wonderful brand of purse that has clips on every zipper called Travelon. I travel a lot by myself and have never had a problem with anyone even though I use metros/public transit all of the time and am usually in big cities, and I carry my Travelon bag cross body with my hands always touching it. They have different sizes and colors, and mine even has a water bottle holder. I wear a black top with either long or short sleeves depending on the weather, a knee length black skort, and a black sweater with different scarves to change up the look. If it’s a cold season I have a black knee length coat or raincoat (depending on the city) and leggings or tights under my skort for warmth. Everything is washable in the sink. I wear comfortable ankle boots in the cold and low, comfortable sandals in the heat. I also speak in a quiet voice if I’m with my children or my sister so that it’s not obvious what language we’re speaking. I’ve had people guess that I’m Dutch, Swedish, and Russian, but never American surprisingly. Many Americans are very loud, so you can pick them out right away by their accents. (My husband is a very tall, big man… he talks however he likes! Ha! You can tell he’s from the US from miles away, but he doesn’t have to worry.) However, when I’m by myself or with kids or other women, I am quiet, walk with purpose, blend in, and figure out where we’re going by looking at maps and google earth before I go. Also, one of the first things I do when I arrive at a destination is go to a local supermarket and buy one of their bags. That instantly makes you look more like a local. They make fun souvenirs too! If I go back to that city, I take my bag with me to re-use. You’ll be fine. Just watch a few more videos, learn a few critical words in the language of the country you’re visiting, and be respectful and quiet just like you would be in the US. It will be a great adventure, and you’ll learn SO MUCH! I’ve found nice people everywhere I’ve gone. You will too. XOXO

When travelling in Europe I have always gone with a group. We may not stay too long in any one place so we have to travel really light. That means I have to carry quite a bit of stuff with me. I must have a bag that is big enough for it all and that has a sturdy enough strap that someone won’t cut through it. (Those things happen.) Also I have noticed that lots of people in Germany and Scandinavia wear very casual clothes so Paris is not all Europe.

I need some advice - I almost always wear a hat outside for 2 reasons - sunlight can be a headache trigger for me and I have very fine thin hair that is easily blown around. Currently I can only grow it to a little below my chin, so it doesn’t look that great pulled back. I have some cute hats but then when we go inside to eat or a museum I would prefer to take the hat off but then my hair looks horrible. Tips?

What you’re showing here are American (mostly university) hooded “sweatshirts”, I hate them. They look sloppy and the inevitable poly/cotton blend is too hot and sweaty. I have a cashmere hoodie and a silk jersey hoodie, without all the sporty pockets, etc., and those are my only “athleisure” items. Even these I find difficult to style in an elegant way, although they are much simpler and in much better fabrics than standard hoodies/sweatshirts. (It would help if they fit better, but I keep losing weight, from aging I suppose). Athleisure is such a huge trend here, but it just isn’t me, it’s super-casual and sporty. I will wear cotton leggings, shorts or joggers and tees on my exercise walks, but they’re not proper day wear, in my opinion.

@@borghc3749 I discovered this brand a few years ago. They are a European brand, Italian, but their bags are sold all over. They are highly underrated. Their bags are made with high qualty leather, the only logo on their bags is on the back so noone would know what the bag is unless they know what it is, and I have never paid more than 500 or 600 for one bag, but they have bags as low as 300 dollars. Their clothes are amazing and high-quality as well.

Bonjour Alice, this is a great video, funny and mostly accurate. However, may I please just point out that there are Americans who know how to dress elegantly (whether here in America or abroad)? Unless you speak with us, you will not know that we are American, I suppose... 😂 For those people that are wondering why this doesn't go both ways (Europeans dressing like Americans when in USA) - consider that the concept is about dressing with class and respect, period. If Europeans were notorious for dressing frumpy or in garments that are too revealing, then its probably fair to assume that the advice would be going in the other direction.

I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. No one ever guesses I’m American unless I speak to them. If I’m with my children, friends, or sisters, we don’t speak loudly enough for them to hear. My mother taught me this, and I’ve taught my children as well. Elegant but simple clothing is accepted everywhere, and it certainly doesn’t have to be expensive. This is a great video for those who don’t know this yet.

We were taught to speak quietly around others from a very young age so we wouldn’t draw attention to ourselves, and Mom dressed us in a lot of navy blue. (She could then also pass down the clothes from girl to boy, etc. ) It worked! Three out of five of us have even lived in different countries. I’ve taught my children as well, and now one of my daughters has been to three continents, two on her own. I’m so proud. :) Good job, Mama!

I was just in Copenhagen and Milan and found them well dressed too. Vienna is next. I’m trying to find comfortable shoes that are elegant now, and I’m not having much luck. @@alyeska1320 Thanks for the info about Greece. The good news is that sneakers are the norm everywhere in Europe now (at least during the day). I have been in France for the last 3-4 years, and during covid and post-covid, it was almost impossible to find someone not wearing sport shoes/sneakers. I have a pair of white leather sneakers and a pair of black sneakers (Vans) and I wear those almost every day. I would also wear them in Vienna without feeling out of place. So it is convenient for tourists because we walk a lot. I do wear my Birkenstocks! But it depends of what I wear with. I have been to Vienna in November (and it was also relatively cold), so I would wear my ankle boots for evening only and sneakers the rest of the day. I guess that for summer in Vienna, I would do the same but would trade the evening ankle boot for a pair of comfortable, all-purpose, flat leather sandals or ballerina.

@@alyeska1320 All this being said, I have read somewhere that for Vienna, you cannot be overly well dressed. Elegance is always appreciated. And, the restaurants and cafés are always elegant too...and affordable. Many times, I found myself in a café that looked so expensive, with precious delicious pastry and the best coffee on earth (the "melange"). Everytime, I was scared to see the bill and everytime, it was a nice surprise. There were restaurants I was convinced I could not afford because of the way they look, and the prices were always within my range. Even the airbnb we rent was very elegant for the price.

They’re friendly, quiet, and respectful, and when I’ve been with them everything was fine. The only problem she ever had was on a different business trip in Milan when she got on the metro with her purse open and had her wallet stolen. She knew she’d screwed up though, and that didn’t happen because she was Korean. I do think the pickpockets we’re watching her more closely though and were able to steal from her because of it. Thankfully the company she works for was able to get her a new credit card right away since it’s a global company. She’s VERY careful with her purse now!

Hello Alice! I just yesterday came back from my five days in Paris. Not the first time there I was in Paris eight times before. But but some of your advices were very very practical. And especially recommendation what to wear to the opera. Thank you very much, I really did look more local than touristy everywhere. But anyway, everybody recognize us as Americans, they hear the language and accent. But we wear our American identity as a badge of honor. Funny part is we were standing in line to get into Sezane store and in front of us were three French girls, not French Canadian, but French, and oh my God, two of them were wearing leggings, leopard, and geometrical something. Yes, I see something like that in my native New Jersey, but what if fiasco to see something like that in Paris. I bet these girls were not Parisians, though they look like tourist from some rural towns of France. After everything I have seen and read about Parisian fashions it was very very funny. And by the way, the quality of Sezane clothing, my daughter and I found absolutely unacceptable, very stiff fabrics unpleasant to wear, boxy cut. I’m glad I did not order it online wasting my time. Especially those Marinier shirts that I saw wanted to get, they were awful ,my Ralph Lauren Pieces are so much better quality. Even Monoprix version is organic cotton and 29 euro vs 105 euro. Thank you again for your hard work and detailed explanation. Everybody should listen your advices. And I already cannot wait to get back to Paris.❤😊
