A lot of people here seem to miss the comedic irony of the fact that almost no cars in this race actually cost 500 dollars, and no more, while completely overlooking the fact that they literally have a "bribes" jar. Man; you guys waaaay too serious in these comments. look; the cars have mandatory safety gear that falls outside the budgetary limits; brakes, tires, fia-approved seat, full roll cage, kill switch, stock fuel system in good working order OR an FIA-approved fuel cel last i remember the limit was 24gallons...or was it 22? anyway above all else they make sure your pile of crap you duct-taped together 5minutes before tech isn't going to turn into a rolling death trap. you want to clear BS inspection? don't bring your cheaty-ass miata or e30 skunkwerks special. you bring a clapped-out malaise-era GM car or an old rat's nest dodge daytona. the cars that don't belong anywhere near a track? that's what they like to see racing most. a close second would be some generic sedan decorated like a parade float. BTW, part of BS; you can technically buy a car for more than $500 if you have to, as long as you can quantify selling enough parts off it to make the budget limit(or at least convince the judges you did) stuff like cool gauges don't particularly affect the perceived value, but Shiny red Eibachs and a sprint cup motor will!

The judges only ever used that rule twice. Once because the team BEGGED them to take the car, the other because the team tried extra hard to cheat (to the point of putting artificially rusted engine parts over the racing bits).

So on each end of the spectrum, you have a car that’s way overbuilt, capable and expensive being raced around with genuinely cheap sketchy cars. So you have cars that are fast but you are more likely to care about hurting the car vs cars that aren’t fast but people will push them way hard because they’re essentially expendable.

I'd go for a diesel, being from germany, I can tell you the fuel economy on those things is mind boggling, I once drove on the autobahn with a friend, I drove my Mark 7 GTI and he drove his A4 2l diesel. We were both limited by winter tires, so max speed was 135mph, my golf drank some good 20 mpg and that audi did 33 mpg.

As a guy who ran 25 Lemons races, with a win , a bunch of top 3's - and we always finished, with a True 500 buck car - we knew how to drive and make it last!. But we quit running the series when it became obvious that car cost was really just a wink wink deal. back in the old days - racers voted and the biggest cheater / Biggest dick on the track, they were pulled off the track on day 2, and their car was destroyed to a bunch of cheering racers. . That provided some incentive for guys to not put high dollar parts in their cars. once that went away - its all about the show - and who you know. we now run Formula V - significantly cheaper - but more important - a level playing field!

Bought a low mileage 93 Celica last month for $450. Only thing wrong with it is a blown clutch and a couple small dents. Clutch kit is under $100 and don't care about the dents since I bought it to set up as a 4 cyl circle track car. They're out there, you just have to look.

I've raced Lemons multiple times as well as ChampCar, and I think ChampCar is a better option. ChampCar does not pretend to have cheap cars like Lemons, but believe me there are Lemons teams spending LOTS of money to make their cars fast, and they are trying to win. Judges are not giving these guy penalty laps that are regulars at their events, they will hammer the first-time lemons racers. I would say this, Lemons is expensive! if you want to simply go "racing" on a road course, then open track events are they way to do it, they let you run regular street cars so no expensive rollcages, etc. And if you have a couple buddies come out and bring their cars too, it is a good fun time.

This is an idea that i think really should be existing in the UK. Seems like everyone has a dirt cheap form of racing these days but us, look at Finland with folkrace for example. But how do these guys get around things like track rental costs for the day? As that's always been the problem over here with trying to get guys off the cheap oval tracks in budget formulas where they pay maybe £20 - 40 in for 2 heats and a final in race entry fees, in comparison to racing on a proper circuit, where you can pay anything from £240 - £340 for Quali and 2 races.

most of the time it's just really how the race organizing works out. most of the lemons staff want some chill time, a great number of tracks will either not run at night(not prepped for it, improper lighting, etc,.) and/or keeping the track staffed overnight is ridiculously expensive. It also gives most teams a chance to weld/duct tape/wrench their crap can back into moving under it's own power on sunday.

I've been interested in LeMons for years, and watching this got the fire stoked again, I have a 97 Grand Prix that I got for free and could easily get shipshape for less than $500...so I went to the website for LeMons and checked out the rules and entry fee. Guys, it costs $1420 USD ($1380 plus $60 for some random reason) plus bribes to get one race at Lemons. One thousand. Four hundred. And twenty US dollars. Holy. Shit. That's just the entry fee, you still need to come up with the cash to safety up you and the car. That's utterly insane and in no way shape or form should they be allowed to call this a cheap, everymans race series. That's a shitload of cash. I can get a day of racing at my local drag strip for $25 and the safety rules are based on how fast your car is, which means any of these LeMons beaters would be fine with a battery hold down. What a crock

R W , not everyone can afford to go racing. No need to get bent out of shape. People that can do, and people that can’t don’t, no big deal. For what it is, it’s pretty cost effective.

Track rental is much more for road racing over drag, emergency services and car recovery cost more, more people needed for marshaling and management, etc. $1,420 is one set of larger race tires, to add a bit of perspective.

@6:04 we still have bottles of HITE! in the RV. Never put Rain-X on the inside. We've made that horrible mistake before. "Rag On A Stick" -- we have several.
