Now that I've seen the whole movie, your story echoes ours in some ways. In our case, we run a modified Chevette. It's been the same car the whole time but with sometimes extreme changes from year to year. 2017: about the slowest thing on the track, finished toward the bottom of the field. Car got lots of attention though, took home a regional build award trophy. 2018: tried to make the car faster, blew it up on the parade lap, spent the whole weekend fixing it and got maybe 20 minutes out of it, earning Heroic Fix and not being DFL. 2019: motor #5 (I wish that was a typo) was great, finished mid pack. Found afterwards that we had a huge intake restriction limiting power drastically. 2020: Come on Coronavirus, GTFO so we can race in June... we have business to attend to.

There are two safety mechanisms built into the rolls about that. one if you showed up with your Ferrari and said you bought it for $500 and you had receipts to quote prove " that, you might be able to get in. however one the judges could force you to sell it to them for $500.to the other people there can all vote to have your car smashed with an excavator. And it put least puts a practical limit on the amount of hubris you're willing to endure. It's kind of like N class citizen rally in the Nordic countries in that respect. but I have seen nice cars but people just wanted to go away and they would give it to you if you would just haul it off because it needed something like a new starter and a dead battery and the seats were ratty. So it is possible actually to get a performance car that would run but getting it road legal might be inordinately expensive tail lights for older cars can be stupid for example. So you could probably get a beater old Corvette with rotten body panels and trashed interior if you looked around for $500. Then donor swap an LS motor from something else that is ready and cheap...

Starting with an existing Lemons car makes the process easier. The suggestion to visit an entire Lemons weekend is useful advice. Figure on your team spending about $4500+ to get started - $500 for the car, but then much more for the roll cage, fire bottle system, various safety mods,racing suits, HANS, tires, gas, etc. I have driven five Lemons and it is a blast.

One thing I learned of years of Forza Motorsport is, in racing your first priority is the track. The other things I learned is, if you can pass someone, do it. Ignore racers behind you. If they want to pass you, it is their problem if they can. To the most part races are won in turns. And lastly, a car is only as good as the driver.

As someone that’s now done multiple lemons races I can say we’ll never be back. The politics involved with lemons simply outweighs whatever fun there is to be had “racing”. The whole 500 dollar car thing has no integrity whatsoever, a true 500 dollar car has no business racing against a c3 corvette with a bmw s52 swapped into it. On top of that being a new team taking it seriously is frowned upon as we received multiple black flags for passing under yellow when there was no yellow(have video of the entire race 🤷♂️) if you want cheap raving that is serious go to Lucky Dog or Champ car. Lemons is a joke
@jfbeam4 жыл бұрын
Lemons is a joke, but Chump isn't? In the east, chump is a f'ing demolition derby. Chump's valuation system is just as much a sham. PUY isn't "lemons politics"; flagging is done by the corner workers -- and they're hired by the track. Yes, they can get it wrong sometimes (wrong car number, etc.) If you're getting flagged multiple times, it's probably your fault. ["It's you, home slice!"] Yes, the "$500 car" thing is not as well enforced as some would like. (it's called "BS" judging for a reason.) The spirit of the series is the Class C cars. Having raced "C" for several years now, that's where you want to be -- you're just happy the car hasn't killed anyone, and maybe there's one or two other cars as hopeless to chase around.

I feel like they're being way too restrictive. Try to pass too agressively? Black flag. Try to corner too sharp and spin your own car? Black flag. Get rear-ended by an impatient Miata? Black flag! How is a driver supposed to push themselves if they're not allowed to make a mistake? With the cars they're driving, and the safety gear they're wearing, I think they can afford to loosen up a bit. And how is it a 24-hour endurance race if they don't race through the night?? This is some bullshit.

For a less tongue-in-cheek affordable endurance racing series, check out American Endurance Series and Champcar (formerly Chumpcar). All are fantastic, look deeper into each series for what works best for your family, team, and budget. If you don’t want to hit oil patches, look for something on a slightly higher budget than Lemons. What Paul got blacked for shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Frankly, if a car is leaking oil, it has no place on a racetrack, but that’s one of the perils of ultra-low budget racing series.

Thre short rule clarifications: Car without safety (lots of stuff) is valued as $500. Cars get a residual value if requested after each race for allowing improvements or repairs. Michael got it about right. There's no spending limit on safety equipment since it's all required. Brakes and tires are a free for all too.
