So glad to hear you are going to Nikko, I've been to Japan five times over the last 15 years and it's one of my favourite areas to visit! Its so close and easy to get to from Tokyo + easy to hire a car and drive around - the temple complex is great, and visiting all the surrounding areas is awesome. Great gyoza at utsonomiya, theres a kamakura festival at yunishigawa in winter, the town of kinugawa onsen is so interesting to walk around with all the abandoned buildings, you can also go canyoning or kayaking there, kawaji onsen is a beautiful small village filled with abandoned buildings as well, and although I thought it might be tacky and had low expectations - Edo Wonderland is so good! The ninja show is EXCELLENT. I also stumbled onto Ryuokyo gorge one day when our plans were cancelled, and it is one of my favourite scenic walks in Japan so far! I went in June so it was vivid green and stunning, but I think it would look beautiful in any season. There's also an amazing abandoned 'Western Village' with animatronics like Westworld, and it looks incredible but I've always been too chicken to go in there and look around. The area used to be such a hot spot - I think it would be so great if tourists were encouraged to go there more so they can get the money and interest to fix up some of the areas that are falling apart.

Also wanted to add - Chris - my last trip to Japan I went to Aomori and Oirase Gorge, thanks to one of your videos. Absolutely loved it - thanks for sharing these places with us!!

Glad to hear you are finally making it to Nikko! One of my favourite places from my last visit to Japan, and the countryside is stunning in Autumn. Look forward to hearing about your journey there. I managed to arrive in time to see Yabusame, which is spectacular if you can get to see it. You mentioned in a recent podcast private onsen where couples are allowed to go in together to the baths. There is one at the Turtle Inn where I stayed with my then partner. As we were being toured around the facilities by a staff member she showed us the 2 person bath and gave us a cheeky wink and said“you can both go in there”. I’ve been meaning to recommend that you visit Nikko every time you say that you’ve never been there and look forward to seeing the video of your visit!

Will be intresting to see Pete's Camera, I can't do it much anymore because of health issues but I used to do street photography using 35mm Film Cameras and my favourite little compact (which is also great if you want a display as they come in may colours) is the Konica Pop, very simple to use and can be pushed and pulled stops by switching the ISO setting (no speed change though, just apeture), pop up flash hence the name on one side and a cocking lever thats easy to grab with your thumb so you can shoot one handed quickly if at an event etc.

The smoking/fermenting process for katsuobushi can be done to other fish. I believe they do it with some types of tuna, but the flavour is apparently much lighter. The city in Kyushu most famous for katsuobushi is Makurazaki, located pretty much at the southernmost tip of Kyushu.

Reminds me of when I lived in Germany and one of the lads went to a German barber. He asked for a No 2 and the barber took that as 2mm and scalped him. I haven't been to Japan since a snowboarding trip in 2006. I remember arriving at Narita pretty early and seeing salarymen drinking on the train on the way to work. Now about to make my return. Doing 4 weeks in Japan next month

I’ve heard that Japan is the place for vintage (1930s and 1940s) cameras. I don’t know enough about cameras from that time to know whether it’s mint or rubbish. However, I do spend time in “Camera Town” near Shinjuku Station’s West Exit looking at what they have.
