The real name of the immediate past Oba of Benin, Oba Erediawa the shortsighted Nigerian Permanent Secretary who messed up the Aburi Accord for Nigeria was Prince Solomon Akenzua not Prince Samuel Akenzua according to the narrator.

@Sunny Obas This nonesense you've written has just shown that you know nothing about the history of your defunct Benin kingdom. As it were, the British didn't need to raise even an army to subdue the defunct kingdom. The Oba violated a trade agreement. He was captured and banished. Simple. The primitive kingdom had no military might to engage the British in any battle not to talk of war. Yet the British didn't need, any support of any kind to subdue the kingdom.

@Sunny Obas You need to go back to school and learn how to read and write English first. As it is, your English communication is so poor that you're not likely to understand and make sound judgement when issues are still made clear to you being already steeped in the falsehood and confusion of oral history of your defunct empire as handed over to you.

I was 13-17yrs old btw 1966-1970 and witnessed 100% the events in Nigeria! The Nigerian civil war was inevitably caused by the failed first republic civilian govt, the first childish coup of Major Nzeogwu, the animal second coup/senseless murder of Major general ironsi and Lt col Fajuyi by hawkish then major Muritela Mohammed and then Captain Danjuma and co. The inability of then Western and Midwestern regions officers of Lt col OBJ, Adekunle etc and Major Ogbemudia to stand their feet against northern domination. Then the middle Belt Junior and middle rank officers who were fighting what they really did not know what they were fighting for! 40-50 years later the key Hawks of the war are dead, pushed aside, and the north west, north east Niger Delta are worst for it in insecurity, vandalism and Banditry. Despite the dictatorship of Abacha, IBB and OBJ, Kano, Niger and SW states remain poverty and rituals ridden. The SE and SS states are still marginalized and hoping for federalism and self govt which Ojukwu wanted at Aburi in 1967 and GOWON was not in a position to stand up for as a moderate young Christian leadership was tossed on him like GEJ of 2009 to 2014.. Now in 2015 to 2022, under PMB Nigeria is not Better off than Anarchy with collapsed armed forces and directionless Police force and Judiciary. The Legislature is worst than motor park thugs and Agberos. Under the executive the health, education/ASUU, road, railway, economy, and oil and gas sectors / refinery,/ fuel and power sectors have collapsed. CBN and all market exchange rate is N500plus to $1.00 Drug and corruption illegality are competing with rural and Urban poverty Nationwide. And so on beyond 2023 whatever that date means.....

The Oba, then a civil servant was a member of Gowon's team. As you said, he was excluded from sensitive deliberations where in the end Jack was outwitted by Ojukwu into "giving away" too many concessions to the rebels. Exercising due diligence, the future Oba wrote a memo to Gowon detailing the consequences of his action leading to the FG's reneging on the Ghana agreements. Undestandably Ojukwu and friends were pissed off and resumed their billigerency. Now explain to me like I am 8 years old how how His Highness caused the Civil War.

He really caused it, having known that he was excluded from the important pert of the meeting without having the clue on what was discussed behind, why did he advise the head of state not to adhere to the agreement? Whereas it was the same fully regional government Nigeria was practising before the first coup? So that means it wasn't even Gowon on his own that refused to follow the Aburi accord,so is Gowon that was to be solely blamed?

I think the question everybody is not asking is was it a war of succession or a war military coup. The Biafra had their flag there was no war, the had their currency, anthem still no war, they crossed into mid western region still no war. The first war started in Ore, in western region. What were Biafrans troops doing in Ore ? While fighting in Ore, Chukwumereje was already announcing that they have captured Lagos which was the nation's capital at that time. So the question begging for answers is what is a war of succession or a war of coup plotters. They already had their biafra but they were was satisfied with that, their main aim was total control of the country.

I know at this point, Ojukwu asked Victor Banjo (whom he had just released from prison) to lead Biafrans troops to take Lagos, so that he'll have upper hand in the coming negotiations. For some reason Victor Banjo stayed way longer than planned in Benin, giving Nigerian troops time to organize, approach and attack. Some ppl say it was sabotage, but Banjo said he was scared bc of the pogroms going on in Nigeria against Bịafrans at that time.... If Biafra had taken Lagos there may not have been a war

I strongly disagree. The war could have been avoided. What leads to most wars has always been failure to abide by international agreements. It was Japan's failure to abide by a ceasefire agreement that provoked America to drop the atomic bomb. In Nigeria it's a habit to excuse away the inexcusable on the basis of sentiments induced by tribal interests. If Nigeria had abided by the Aburi Accord, there wouldn't have been the restructuring song some people are singing today because everything was taking care of in that accord. We must admit it that as even some professors were campaigning for "change" in 2015, the menace of some short-sighted elites in Nigeria didn't start today.

@@marvisnwokocha6772 So according to you and this piece of useless history, it is Oba Erudiuwa that caused the war ? For your information not all war are caused by not accepting agreement. The Japan example you sighted is very wrong because to fit your narrative you jumped to end of WW2 and dropping of bomb on Japan and leaving the fact that the war started years before atomic bomb was dropped. Japan started the war for imperial expansion there was no agreement breached sir. Funny enough you twisted the story on restructuring. It was Aguiyi-Ironsi that abolished restructured Nigeria at the time. He dissolved the regional power and started unitary government. Ojukwu served under him. Why didnt he go to Aburi at the time to ask for federating units? But rather he was a supported of Ironsi his brother but when northern guy came to power now he suddenly remember federating units. What is done is done, we can't turn the hands of time. Let's set our eyes on the present, and avoid the same mistake. This is not the time to start pointing fingers. Everything that happened before and during the civil war, I believe were collective errors from the leaders at the time. And sadly to say, the tragedies of the past is repeating itself before our eyes. The only difference is that, it's taking a different form. To be sincere, nothing has changed since then. That’s the sum of it all. This is witchcraft at a national level. They are deliberately and energetically holding the South back. Gowon should be held for his war crimes against the South before he dies, souls are asking for justice. I’m yet to see a Northerner with WAEC that doesn’t have a job in Nigeria. In the South graduates are riding keke, which is what the Northerners that barely completed primary school do. And every penny comes from the South. They sanction us economically by placing high tariffs on our businesses and unfavorable policies, ie limitations on dollar transactions and their policy on crypto etc. Now they asking for $6billion USD to upgrade the military in 3years. So, they want to use our money to upgrade the Northern military and use them against us? Una wise welwel. I’ve never heard police shot a civilian in the North,or even check points in the North. In the South sometimes you see the next check point from the checkpoint you at. This militarization of the South depicts that we are being treated as a conquered people. Moreover, people that were kidnapped keep talking about choppers flying very close to where they were held hostage. That aside, we have a government that goes to sleep when boko haram and Fulani herdsmen attack peace loving communities, kill people, rape, kidnap, and even attack them at IDP camps, take their wives and kidnap more people. They go to schools kidnap students at Universities and even secondary schools. Yet the government is trying to tell us these terrorists have a voice for their struggle even as the South was allowed a voice. WTF!! Did the South kidnap students, did the South rape or kill innocent people? How can they justify the comparison? So they went further to give terrorists amnesty. That’s just laughable. What a shame. You rape and kill someone’s mother in the farm,a woman over 60years old, and you say that’s a struggle? You give them amnesty? If they have a struggle, shouldn’t it be with the government of the day policy makers? This started with Gowon, when he did not uphold the Aburi Accord. All the killings from 1967 till this day is on him. He should be held responsible . Thank God The man is still alive

The tittle seems very bogus and erroneously misleading, for deliberately assigning the causes of the Nigeria civil war to one man. It is a deliberate distortion of history as to what led to the Nigeria civil war. The eminent civil servant merely gave his opinion and his advice to the Head of State, and it was left for his boss to either accept it or reject it. Also, it was unfair categorization to blame the OBA of Benin for Nigeria failure to embrace or adapt true Federalism. Because he was not a Head of State and has no power to proclaim or enshrine such important proclamation into law. And it was naivety for the narrator to assumed that Gowon would have single handedly enacted a decree dividing the country into federalism, without proper consultation with the top military brass that selected him to be Head of State. The Nigeria civil war was very unfortunate, and the OBA of Benin was a peace loving man and he did not encourage civil war against the Igbo. Because the Bini Kingdom has long relationships with the Igbo speaking people in the then Midwest region, now part of Delta State. And the Binis see them as brothers and sisters because of long cultural history between them, which continues to this day.

@@dokorobia8713 Your choice of words aligned perfectly well with the reason given for the scramble for Africa. Which is very unfortunate. The cultural heritage of the now delta Igbo are intertwined with the Bini history and culture. It is an historical fact for which I am proud to be associated to both culture. However, you are doing a disservice to the causes of the Nigeria civil war and history by tagging the late OBA of Benin Kingdom as the sole reason for the war. Therefore, a distorted history is dangerous for the coming generation. And by labeling the late OBA of Benin as the cause of the civil war and the causes of the Nigeria problems is in my candid opinion trivializing the civil war, and scapegoating the late OBA of Benin. Please stop this madness.

@@christopheradodo4718 Indeed I agree with the fact that igbo people in the place now called delta state have their history intertwined with bini. I do not dispute that. In fact, it is great. But I would like you to read what I wrote FAIRLY. From me saying ONE MAJOR CAUSE to you claiming I said it is the SOLE REASON. Is just blatant lying. Of course the british is also a major cause and more major than that of the oba of Benin. But the oba of Benin is also a major cause. Not accepting the truth is a huge reason Africa was colonised. I am not repeating that mistake. I can both see that our collective enemy is the British and the wrong doings of the Oba of Benin. People in that seat of power have constantly done wrong. For example. The overwhelming evidence of human sacrifice on a massive scale done in Benin city by the precolonial obas. Using Itsekiri and Urhobo people in particular. I have no problem with bini people and the heritage, it is quite great in all honestly. But the way people see it through rose tinted glasses? Nah.

@@dokorobia8713 What? “Human sacrifice on a massive scale.” I believe you are going beyond the topic relevance to denigrating the great Benin Empire, which is very sad. Because your accusation is scandalous and a bitter individual holding force opinions against the Benin Kingdom. Probably as narrated by your European masters. The concept that anything said by colonisers was false and fabrication to justify their (rightly called) barbarity is in itself false. Igbo oral history, ijaw oral history and Urhobo oral history also testifies to this fact. I do not think the destruction and looting of Benin city is justified on the Europeans part not one iota of me feels that. However the point of what I said was just that I do not care about the office of the Oba of Benin when telling the truth. Other people see Benin through rose-tinted glasses but not me. Its even stated that at a point the civilians were asked to leave the room, which means certain agreements were reached between Gowon & Ojukwu. It was the reneg of these agreements that eventually led to the civil war & not Oba Erediawa. How do I know this? My late father was one of the army officers in Aburi & in that room. If this is the evidence you're providing to show he "started" or "caused" the civil war, I can tell you it would have been laughed out of the prosecutors office, let alone a court.

We still want to know why everybody came up is attacking the Igbi accuse them for being the cause of the Biafra Nigerian, the coup of 1966 because Igbo coup while the people who caused this war were people from Delta state. We want to know why Igbo are the ones suffering it. We heard that during the Aburi meeting this prince Erediauwa, did not appear. What made Azikiwe thinks that when they took off from Oba of Benin's kingdom to settle in Onitsha and the meaning Onitsha is because it is the land of the superior. Did it become superor becous6 Azikiwe was a kind before he ran to Onitsha made him superior. I think that sone people have no sense at all. When a king lives his house because of war, he has already been defeated according to the order Nature. When he tour race to Onitsha ,were there no people living there? No wonder he wrote who are the Igbo who many armies did he came with to conquer the land, there is nothing Igbo will not suffer. This will give birth to trouble in Igbo because like i know Onitsha language, is spoken not written. If we cannot find our histroy while in Africa the Europeans would not tell us the truth. What is all this coming from Egypt, when did that hapoen, how? I know that during the European scramble for Africa, there was no Egypt in the 1500 it cam up in 1900 and by this time slaves have moves on in their verious places married with children.

Why do you come on here trying to sound knowledgeable while utterly betraying your ignorance? Do you understand what an accord means? An accord is legal resolution deliberated upon and agreed upon by two or more conflicting groups which are usually nations. It's an unshakable resolution of the terms AGREED upon by all involved parties in order to avoid conflict and ensure peace. Once agreed upon and signed, it is binding, just like a contract. A party can't just choose to no longer honor it. If this happened any other time from between the late 80's and now, the international community would have intervened in that war in favor of Biafra. Unfortunately, it happened when the United Nations was engrossed with managing the tensions of the Cold War. BTW, how is this 'powerful center' version of Nigeria working out for you??? Isn't this Aburi model with powerful regions, and federating millitary and police what people have been calling for for the last 20+ years, and we're no closer to achieving it now than in 1967? Could you imagine how much more sophisticated and developed Nigeria would have been with strong regions that had to contest with one another for which had the best infrastructure, economy, education, and the justice system? We ran away from progress when all it was doing was trying to visit us, no what we have is this zoo of a country.

All these young Ibo boys who were not born but were told stories about the war now think they know it all. The Igbis started it and could not finish it. I was in Nigeria from the first coup to the end of hostilities, I know the whole story. Just accept the part your predecessors played in the unnecessary civil war and move on with your lives. When you keep going back, you will never allow God to heal you. I saw a lot of unnecessary bloodshed, all those young UNN undergrads were made to fight a war they did not start but then they died and Ojukwu lived to be given an honorable funeral, a military funeral when he died. All the big shots made it but the poor ones suffered. So you people, stop the nonsense.

Sorry but you haven’t been clear as to how Prince Akenzua actually caused the Civil war. If he’d been excused for a portion of the meeting and an agreement was made in his absence, how could he have caused the war? Did he command soldiers to start firing weapons? The topic of this video is more like click-baiting.

He started the shooting or what? Did he participate in the 1st or 2nd bloody coups? As a professional in the civil service, he carried out his duties diligently for the good of the nation. Anyone blaming him is not only a fool but a complete lunatic.

What a load of codswallop to feed your viewers! I think a fair description of this post would be something of a hit job or a desperate attempt to provide a new angle to a story that is already well told by far more competent and objective authors. Your narrative conveniently avoids the appetite that was rife for political vendetta and domination among the Northern elite. Against this backdrop, what do you think a poxy memo from a civil servant would have achieved in staving off a war that had become inevitable due to the obstinacy of the contending parties?

Selfishness and greed was probably the cause of the war. Look at what’s happening since the formation of independent Southern Sudan. So blame the leadership.

General Ojukwu did not attend the Benin meeting. You mentioned those attended the meeting mainly on General Gowon's side, but did not those on Ojukwu's side, who attended the meeting and were the brains behind, the Aburi Peace Accord, like MN Mbanofoe, NU Akpan and Okokon Ndem. The Ojukwus were heavily prepared, showing that they knew what government was. Gowon and Katsina did not comprehend what government is, although, they were power drunk. My father as a young man senior civilian official of Ojukwu, was one of those who received the Ojukwu's entourage back in Enugu. Definitely, there is no need to submerge the history of that war, but to say that Gowon started that war by altering and sabotaging that Peace Accord that was agreed on by all parties. That action shows the lack of knowledge of what politics is and public policy.is. Always in wars, it takes only one person to cause a war, and as you know since, what was written and agreed on was not kept, the very young men, especially the one self claimed of the post, had to put on a bloody war fight, that costs millions of the lives of the Easterners and Biafrans, the destruction of and lost of documents and properties, destruction of cities and the sufferings of the peoples, without any apology, asking forgiveness and reconciliation. If your proposal is true, then the Oba was wrong, together with his Gowon, as Nigeria has so disintegrated, with the lies of one Nigeria.

Prince Akezua did not cause the Civil war. He saved the disintegration of Nigeria. The Federal soldiers gave their lives to save Nigeria, my dear country. We should all remain indebted to all of them. The root cause of the civil war was the indiscriminate and selective killing of the northern and western military officers (igbonization of the Nigerian Army), political and spiritual leaders, while those of the eastern origin were tipped to escape. Also, General Ironsi taking up the leadership and refusing to punish the coupist did not convince anyone that he was not part and parcel of the coup, just as Dimka's coup was meant to bring back Gowon. Had the officers from the east placed national interest above sectional interest there would not have been war and the mistrust existing between various sections of the country. Let's be thorough in our analysis, for posterity sake.

If there was a time machine and you can see Yoruba on Yoruba violence in 1965 over the Akintola and Awolowo rivalry you will be ashamed and realize why the coup happened months later in January 1966. I blame your elders for not telling you the truth. Go and ask the men that are 70 years and older about 1965.
