Baba Nastya is the embodiment of all that is good about humanity. Her faith, rooted in ancient beliefs which have transcended so many troublesome events over the centuries, keeps her mentally and physically strong as she goes about her life day to day, one scrumptious baked treat at a time... she needs no radio nor television to fill the ambient space around her, it is her ancient spiritual songs and poems, recalled from memory and set to the cadence of lovingly baking breadsweats for her neighbors, prepared in an oven that will never need a milliliter of gas nor a kilowatt of electricity, only routine maintenance such as sweeping clean the chimney. In times like these, when all too often differences are that which divides humanity, and worse, it is the strength of character of the baba Nastyas of the world to whom we ought look for reassurance, resilience, fortitude in times of trouble, and overall well-being. Excellent video, Eli. You are a world embassador who makes national borders melt away, we all sit at baba Nastya's table and learn with you. Thank you to you, and to baba Nastya. Спасибо.🙏

God Bless the Grandma and yourself. I'm an old man from Texas, now 82. She reminds me of my Grandmother. She was born in 1875. I lived with her for a while when I was about 12. She lived a very simple life and was a person of great enduring faith in God. She ss a refuge from the American Civil War where after the war the Yankees, carpet baggers and scalawags stole everything and could not be considered as human beings they were so vile. My grandmother lived to be 98 and lived on the farm by herself until she was 96. Her husband, my Grandfather died when he was only 36 yo. My Mother was only 3 yo. Yet she took on the farm and raised her 5 kids by herself. She was the happiest person I ever knew. Thank you for your website. It brings up so many good memories. Dude, the Civil War was 150 years ago, I'd hope you'd have a little more historical objectivity by now. The reconstruction advocates were doing what they could to provide rights and human dignity to emancipated slaves, which white Southerners aggressively fought against. That's not to say there weren't abuses and issues on both sides, just that it comes across as almost comedic to call Northerners "vile" as a blanket statement while not extending a single bad word to the literal slaveholders.

The city of Sitka, Alaska used to be called Novoarkhangelsk, and there are still Russian signs. In Erie, PA, there is a large Old Believer church, perhaps one of the largest in the Northeast. Small communities also exist in places like Saskatchewan and Alberta, where Old Believers have assimilated generally into Canadian and American lifestyle, but still retain traditonal and rustic lives at home, not too dissimilar to their Russian counterparts. Well... They believe that just making sign of the cross diffently makes others antichryst. I don't think it is similar to the core beliefs of Christianity. I respect people of different faith but acknowledge their historical role of weakening Orthodox Church in Russia, thus making it vulnerable and dependent on secular authorities. Nothing good came of that as we see even today.

God bless the Old Believers who wrongly suffered persecution and even death brought on then by the the Moscow Patriarchy. I am a traditional Latin Rite Catholic and we also face persecutions as we adhere to the ancient liturgical books and Sacraments. The present Pope of Rome persecutes us and the clergy when all we do is hold to the ancient forms and customs. May we draw strength from you who suffered so much and I keep you in our prayers!

Definitely not comparable to persecution on Old Believers though.
@tatyanakol3 ай бұрын
@@fluffyunicorn57 really?! Like Catholic Croatians killing thousands of Orthodox Christian Serbs, or Catholics in America killing Orthodox Christian Aleuts like Peter the Aleuts. There are towns in Russia where old believers live and survived. That wasn’t the case during wars between Catholics and Protestants

@@tatyanakol Reread my comment and the original comment. I was saying that persecution on Latin Rite Catholics, a denomination that has only existed since the 1960s, is nothing compared to persecution on Old Believers. Your reply was about Orthodox Christians, something neither of us mentioned. Latin mass is practiced by a small minority of Catholics, mostly in the US, who have faced little discrimination other than, maybe, some degree of censorship from the Pope (which has had no effect on their ability to congregate and practice their religion).

The old Russian Babushka is an amazing old woman. ❤ God lover her 🙏 She may be an old woman but she has never forgotten the recipe of an old Russian traditional dish. 5 children 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Wow ! 😮 I wonder if her children know the old Russian dialect too ? The old believers sounds perfect for this small Russian village in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and the Volga Federal District in Russia 🇷🇺 Imagine holding on to your Russian Orthodox Christian ☦️ beliefs for so many years ? Even at a time when the Russian Orthodox Churches ⛪️ were banned and locked down the Russian Orthodox Christians never lost faith in what they believe in. That very old wooden Russian Orthodox Church in that village looks so very old. Thank you Eli From Russia 🇷🇺 🙏 ❤️ for doing this video. No Westerners as myself from Canada never get to see what life in the old Russian villages in Russia. All we see mostly is Moscow and St. Petersburg. When the old Babushka woman kissed you on your cheek Eli, it brought a smile 😃 to my face because you could of just as easily be one of her grandchildren.

Dear Eli and Russian Friends, I enjoy your videos and have learned so much about Russia and her people through them. My children (23 and 26 yrs old) have been taught by me all their lives to love and appreciate all people(s) for the beautiful things they bring to the world and our lives, especially through their unique cultures. My son, Louis, studied music and history in college and together we have learned a great deal about Russia's incredible history, from the days of the Rus, through the Czars and all that followed, with a particular interest in the unbelievable defense of the nation during WWII, as we call it here in the United States. The Russian films, "Stalingrad" and "Come and See" are terribly sad but the truth is often so. I watched your video about the city of beautiful women, lol, and I really appreciated the questions and answers from the people. One thing I would like to share with your Russian family and friends is that I hope that the young people do not trade in their beautiful heritage and traditions for our Western materialism which I imagine seems attractive to many. Americans are mostly very nice and decent people, and have no grudges against the Russian people. The situation with the war in Ukraine beings out many feelings but unfortunately, most are not very well informed on facts because they are hard to get second and third hand. As we say here, there are two sides to every story. I choose to care about everyone in between these issues. It's fine, even fun, to be a little bit Western as long as it doesn't supplant the foundations of your Russian heritage and identity. I would lament that taking place. BTW, I love the sharing of the foods and drinks. They look delicious and very healthy. I don't know about the drink that tastes like bread, lol. There are many Russiand Ukrainian people moving to my small city in the Midwestern United States: Springfield, Missouri. All very nice, friendly people. My family welcomes all people. It must be very hard to leave behind country and family so they need friendly people to greet them. Peace be with you and all of Russia. - Larry Cataldo

My mother's family settled in the Volga region at the invitation of Catherine the Great. They were German's, but I believe the life styles were very similar. Hard working, very religious, strong family ties, and my grandmother sang a lot. When guests visited then, the host family entertained with song and or musical instruments. This video gives me some idea of what life may have been for them. My grandparents immigrated to the U.S. in 1912. Lost contact with their family after the Revolution. Kitchens were main gathering areas. Advice from my grandmother, "If your kitchen is clean, your whole house looks clean." A big lightning ball of St. Elmo's Fire raced through the house during a severe storm when she was small. It affected her greatly. My grandmother never slept during a thunderstorm. You could hear her singing hymns, knitting in her room until the storm was over.

When Catherine left Germany to marry the Czar, her father was afraid she'd be lonely. He sent several thousand citizens to go with her. They settled along the Volga in the Czarista. My father's mother's family were Volga River Germans. Some of the Germans longed for home and attempted to migrate home. My paternal grandmother's parents made it to western Poland. In the mid 1800's they came to America. I am proud of my Russian blood. (11% according to the DNA test I took.)

I am almost 70. The old, exquisite Othodox churches in Russia were exposed, abandoned and beginning to fall down when I was in high school. Like the church (remnant) shown here, beautiful wooden structures with paint wore off, open to the elements rain and snow, heat and cold, slowly deteriorating. I hope if there are any even left at this point, I hope Russia will begin to restore them, if only as a a memory if their history. Think the fm, Dr. Zhivago, but even more beautiful... Thank you for giving us even just a tiny glimpse.

Lenin and Stalin despised the church and did everything they could to undermine it because it was a threat to their power. They expropriated many churches, turning them into community centers, libraries, and even barns for livestock. They destroyed others, including the largest church in Christendom, but that church has been rebuilt exactly as it was now.

My word. Watching the Babushka Old Believer was somewhat humbling. I don't really know what to say. I just get the feeling that if I was in her presence I would feel respect and aura that I would never forget. Extraordinary, as much as watching some of the beautiful sights of Russia! I'm British, and I see it as such a tragedy that we have in a way been sheltered from the Russian civilization and what it represents. Ironically, I think the last few years have opened the window to 'The Russian Soul' to many many people around the world. Watching your videos over time, it almost seems like you have opened new windows too! Its amazing what we can miss on our own doorstep. Very unfortunately it’s the western world which got lost in complete madness and has no more respect for the elderly, for the tradition, for their own roots. When they talk about “culture”, inclusion and so far it’s just a bunch of BS. Pure insanity. Eli’s videos are really beautiful and inspirational.
