It seems like 2-3 year old cars on dealer lots cost almost as much as new cars...

It depends on the manufacture, model, and popularity of that model. Try finding a discounted Subaru and you are probably out of luck (particularly on the four cylinder models). Try to find a Chrysler 300 or Jaguar and you probably will do really well.

Not true. Right now on TrueCar I can buy a new Toyota Corolla for $29,000 or buy a two year old equivalent Corolla with only 17,400 miles for $10,000. Or 2017 for $12,980 with 9,866 miles. I challenge you to find any 2018 Corolla for under $13,000. The thing is, you cannot. These are good cars available right now in my area.

Great advice if you want to make car payments for the rest of your life. If you get a 3-6 year old reliable car like a Camry or Corolla, you can drive it for 20 years and the maintenance costs are way less than car payments once it is paif off. 100,000 miles is nothing if you have a good car that you maintain properly.

An important aspect noone seems to recognise: If you drive a lot of miles, say 30k per year, focus on buying a used car with low miles on it. If you drive a little, pay more attention to the age than the miles.

I liked the Nova my parents had, but did not like the fact you had to fasten your seat belt to start the car. Why? Because the stupid interlock failed frequently and the car had to be towed. It was the only problem on an otherwise good car. We also had a 71 Impala and a 74 Vega (replacing the faulty Nova).

These numbers were from my local craigslist equivalent (80% dealership asking prices a opposed to private asking prices). Sample size was 22 Subaru Legacies and 27 Civic Lx's. 2015 vs 2018 Civic Lx: 22% savings 2015 vs 2018 Legacy 2.5i limited and 2.5i average: 16% savings

I will help out manny Americans here with my knowledge of car buying! Keep in mind this is for Americans who don’t want to put any money or little down! Ok first off if your on a tight budget or are very young and don’t have a good paying job! Buy a mid sized or smaller American 4 door car for around 10 to 15 grand , you can get 1 , 2;and 3 year old cars with miles as low as 10 thousand miles! Your payment will be anywhere from 175 to 250 a month! That’s cheap to put no money down ,have a two year old car and miles around 20k! I searched my area and found countless Chevy Malibu’s as new as 2016 , dodge avengers, Chrysler 200s, ford fusions, Nissan altimas, I even found Cadillac CTS s all wheel drive with miles in the 30k range for 15k! It’s very easy use eBay motors or autotrader ! Chevy cruises hyundi sonatas were also inexspensive! Many young Americans over spend and get themselves into trouble buying cars with high payments and a bunch of show off gadgets they can’t afford! Remember your buying a car for dependable transportation and cost efficiency, stay away from brand new after all a new car is used the day after you drive it home! Next year when you want to buy a house you will wish you didn’t get a high car payment because it will effect your debt ratio , which is a formula the banking industry uses to figure out how much you can spend on a home! I hope this helps my fellow Americans and if it helps just one person than I will be happy! Good luck!

Lots of good information here. Mileage is really only an expectation of condition. Modern mechanicals really do not ware out. They usually break due to some sort of event. Such as worn out oil or a fault in a component. Personally I prefer cars with over 100000 miles. If you find the right one the next 100000 can be surprisingly trouble free.

Why would DMV know anything? DMV is only informed if the title is converted to a salvage one. I can full throttle my car into my garage wall (sudden acceleration, lmao), then take the car to a body shop to manually pay and DMV is not involved. Cops not involved. Body shop will not reveal the incident unless subpoena'd but since I caused my own mess, I don't care about that.

Discontinued cars are a hit and miss. Pros: -Not many people will have them, making your car unique. -No successor means you'll always have the latest version of that model. Cons: -Discontinued means that it wasn't very popular, therefore it might not hold its value that well. (Exceptions include s2000, Supra, and other sporty classics). -The automaker might have discontinued it because it was too impractical to make, so that could lead to parts being really expensive. -Small buyer pool. (Self explanatory)

If you're talking about Saab, Oldsmobile, Mercury, etc. then a definite no. Unless you're willing to fork out tons of money for repairs/maintenance or something that could go wrong with the car. If the independent mechanic you trust so much can't fix the problem, then you're SOL.

Actually, I own a Saab 9-3 since 2006 (new) and now have 163,000. If you owned the car before they went under like I did, you know the mechanics as they did not all die. In fact, most opened up independent shops which are now part of the Saab dealer network (yes, they still have one - they are all listed on Saab's website). The car does not need almost any repairs, and now I have 163,000 on it. One of the cheapest cars I have ever owned. If you know nothing about cars I would not recommend this approach. Since I am pretty well versed and used to work on them myself, I know how to keep a discontinued brand running. Note that for any discontinued brand, parts are still made by the original manufacturer for 6 years by US federal law (if the manufacturer still exists - in the case of Pontiac, Saab, Hummer they fall under GM). That will expire in a couple of months for me but I am still okay as third parties will support the millions of Saabs on the road for at least a few years more - like to 2021. At that point my car will be 15 years old and it will be time for me to get a new one as I don't like keeping them much beyond 200,000.

sorry, but you are dearly uninformed @keith cunningham. While i agree that most new cars today will last 10 years without many issues, there is no debating that japanese vehicles (specifically honda and toyota) will have a lower probability of encountering reliability issues. And if you are buying a car close to the 10 year mark and plan to keep it an additional 10 years, i would most definitely steer clear of americans and/or germans. There is a reason lexus is the most reliable car, and toyota is second. And there is a reason why used toyota and honda models are more expensive than their american/german counterparts.

New cars are for rich people and fools who do not understand the value of money. Buying a 10 year old car will save you thousands, even after you've paid out to have the failing components replaced. Consider this, an Audi A4 is 30k, whereas a 10 year old Audi A4 is 2.5K. Other than a facelift and newer interior tech most of the mechanical components will be similar if not identical. Also, newer tech can be retrofitted to older cars. Buying a new car when you can't afford it is one of the biggest mistakes one can make in a life time. That money could instead be used to buy property which can then be used to produce an income and appreciate in value. Make yourself rich through passive income, only then should you reward yourself the luxury of a new car. Don't be suprised to find the buzz of a new car is short lived, after that it you'll wish you saved the money and brought the 10 year old car. If cars are way out of your price range how about phones, it's amazing how many fools get suckered into buying the latest iphone / android. Absolutely mental.

While I agree that buying at about the 3 year-old stage is a good idea I think the optimum point for selling depends on the quality of the car and whether you have access to a reliable indy garage or have a degree of car servicing/repair capability yourself. 90k seems way too early if it's a quality car (Lexus, BMW etc) and you are able to avoid franchise dealer parts & labour charges on the minor replacement such a car likely needs (gaiters, bushes, belts, hoses - basically the rubber-goods!). I've used the same garage since 1980 and they always give me a very good deal. Buying outgoing models is a good idea - they take a hit when the new model comes out but it's likely any major issues that should be avoided will be readily know (I got a great low-mileage E34 BMW after the E39 came out and avoided the BMW Nikasil issue). Buying an unpopular colour can help - my current Subaru is that metallic beige that meant it sat in the dealership till they axed the price. Also, by not buying the, then new, boxer diesel I avoided the crank breakage issue that hit that engine. I have had only 3 family cars since 1982 with a combined purchase cost of under £29,000 (~$40k) a depreciation hit of under $1100/year and falling as I get more years out of my current car - less still if I factor in the insurance payout when car #1 got written off.

I just picked up a 2006 vehicle for $2.5K with 160K on it. just threw $750 at it to seal up the leaks and will throw $1750 to do the clutch. The engines are good for @ 250-300K miles. My use timetable is 5 years, starting today. I think it will work and am placing my bets accordingly. Expect a walkaway value of the vehicle after 5 years to = $0, but the calculation in comparison of a high value used at a $275/mo for 48 months (+ collision insurance and reg) dictates that if I went there it's a cost of @ $14K. My spend will be 1/2 that, putting $2K in reserve for a new A/C when that blows. I think its a damn good gamble.

My strategy has always been to buy for £3000 run for 5 years then sell for £1000, it can be done and you can buy decent enough cars that look the part and can go the distance. I used to buy more expensive high end cars but I worked out the money I was throwing away was better allocated elsewhere.

Your codes come up clear, but you also have monitors that are flashing because they haven't completed yet, letting you know that the battery has been disconnected, probably in order to hide the codes until sold. If you're smart enough to carry a scanner with you when you look at a car, you probably know that. I always check with the code scanner, and if all the monitors haven't completed, I won't buy the car until they have all completed and there are no codes. This is a cheap way to protect yourself from shifty sellers.

Also make sure you test drive the car for at least 10 minutes and get it up to full operating temperature. My co-worker bought a used car without test driving it, because the seller said it had no issues. He drove down the road after 10 minutes and the engine overheated, because it had a blown head gasket and they had already signed the purchase agreement.

How does a buyer take someone else's car to a mechanic? Doesn't the owner/ seller have to do that? Obviously they would have to agree to it. If someone is selling a car that they've only had a couple of years, shouldn't I wonder why they're selling? If it's a good car would they not keep it longer, at least five years?

My advice is don't buy a used car with between 50-70K miles on it. If it has 50k on the clock you will be soon be spending a fortune on it because most car parts are designed to last for about 60k. If it has 70k or more it has probably already had these worn out parts replaced, but don't forget to check the history and demand invoices as proof the work has been done.

First it is not about years of the car, is about how many number are on the clock and what brand is the car. For all my researching with a different mechanic there are 3 options in cars brand in the first category. (Average use, for average people). Subaru, mazda and toyota. (Three of them are realeble car, but the cost of fixing if this occurs from expensie to cheap is the same order above....but it is really hard that happen ) mechanic always said to me, pick a Toyota one under 100.000 k runned with 1.5 c.c or 1.8 c.c and you do not can get wrong. The next category is korean one (Hyunday and kia)...both are almost as good as the first one category, but no resale price and few factory issues in some of them model. (But value and price really good). And if you wants something better than Toyota go for Lexus (that is Toyota high class segment). I got a Toyota Yaris 2009 I bought in 2016 with 60.000 k on the clock, 1.5 engine and mechanical transmition. I just like it. Ps. My advice is to learn how to change the oil and oil filter, do this between 3.500 k or 5.000 k. A weekly outside hand wahing at an high pressure place with 2 o 3 coins. Do the service in the Maintenance car by the dealer when apply...(or your trusted mechanic....if few still are there) Keep with good wheels (no expensive one). And you going to laugh....until 250.000 k easy....

All good tips. I have a new strategy that saves me some money but allows me to buy a new car. I buy a car at the end of a model year - October/November timeframe. I look to see what is unpopular on a popular, reliable model I am interested in. In this case, it was 2013 and the Subaru Legacy 3.6 6 cylinder was very unpopular on the least popular Subaru model (85% buy 4 cylinder engines). Dealers were begging to get rid of them. So I got $10,000 off the MSRP on the car and bought it new. Now I plan to keep it 15 years and then sell it for about nothing. In the meantime, those using this method will have gone through three cars and will have bought their fourth or will be about to do so. The amount of money spent will be close to the same since I bought the car initially at a large discount. My Saab I did the same thing when I bought it in 2006 and now with 163,000 and about 12 years later it still runs and has needed minimal repairs. I don't own a new car for long periods of time, but I am not spending that much more than the methods used above. In about three years I will look for my next new car in the fall when they are on discount again. This year - the Buick Regal and Enclave are good contenders even though I wont buy one as I don't need a new car - they are advertising 17% to 20% off on both those 2017 models.

Sam S that is excellent advice. I also do the same thing. Bought a 2015 Chrysler 300 with the 5.7 HEMI fully loaded. Brand New zero miles from the dealer show room. It was three years old. Window Sticker was almost 48,000. I bought it for 31,500. I assume no one wanted an 8 cylinder rear wheel drive car in the North east. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Aussie Pom - true to some degree. Like I mentioned, the Legacy sedan does not sell well for them compared to the other models they sell. The sedan depreciates massively off the lot in the Americas. For example, the Legacy I bought I saved $10,000. That still exists today after 4.5 years later and 67,000 miles. That means in US dollars I could get about $12,000 for it. The Outback, or the wagon version of the same car today is worth in America $14,000 or two thousand more. This is comparing the exact same specs to each other on Kelly blue book. So while they do hold their value better, the Legacy sedan in particular does not hold its value as well as the equivalent wagon they sell (or Forester SUV which is worth even more).

I all ready have 178,403 miles on my 2009 Toyota. Not your normal milage on a fairly young car as it's all highway miles. Runs like a clock! It's more like break in period for a Toyota.

If you need to get out of a car at 90k miles as suggested, you obviously are not driving a well maintained Honda or Toyota. Buy those brands (Honda less so these days), take care of them, and get 200k miles easily.

In the year 2002 I bought a 1990 toyota pick up for $1,800 dollars. Took the truck home, used about another $400 dollars and replaced the following parts. Radiator, water pump, spark plugs and cables, thermostat, main hoses, a good oil change and a k&n filter. After that, my used little pick up lasted me for ever. So with about $2,200 bucks I ended up getting a very old but very reliable little truck which I enjoyed a lot. Later I spent about another $3,00 dollar to custom upholster the seat and also bought some nice mustang rims to make it look a bit nicer. This truck helped me save the money to later buy a very nice looking but used BMW car. At the end the BMW ended up being a piece of shit car, bad investment compared to my forever little pick up.

Based on that one fact alone, a NEW Corolla is the much better buy here.

I have a 2001 Chevrolet Impala with 224,300 miles, with original engine, but original transmission was rebuilt at 223,000 for under $2,000. It has never been wrecked and drives extremely smooth and extremely quiet. I plan on driving this a very long time, and saving a lot of money doing this. I believe the engine will make it to more than 300,000, because oil was changed very often, and easy with startups. Many of the miles were interstate miles, and continue to be. Taking care of your car, knowing your car history personally, and saving the headache of paying tax on another car that you don't know the history, is in my opinion, not always the best idea.

depreciation is no a dirty little secret, its the biggest part of owning a car. the monthly payment is NOT what the car costs you. I like what you said you will never know what the car really costs you before you buy it, maintain it, and sell it. and screw the independent mechanic, a 30 minute checkover by any mechanic is not going to tell you a god damn thing except a few easy maintenance items that any shade tree mechanic. Thumbs down, i'm sorry. Run your own numbers, check what you are paying new, and forcast it out using autotrader and see what residuals of that same car is over 3, 5, 8 years. Don't buy a new car if you think your life might change in 3 years... .
