AT Conversions customizes vehicles to make them more accessible for people who use wheelchairs.They turned the head-turning gull-wing door into a functional design. The converted vehicles give people who use wheelchairs more options when they are purchasing a new vehicle.
The following is a transcript of the video:
Narrator: AT Conversions customizes vehicles for a good reason. It turns popular trucks and SUVs into wheelchair-accessible vehicles. The conversion process works on a variety of makes and models so customers have a broad range of options. The most eye-catching option? The gull-wing door. It takes 25 seconds for the lift to expand or retract. AT Conversions' mission is to make wheelchair-accessible vehicles that people want to drive. It can customize a vehicle's passenger or driver side, and accommodate manual or powered chairs. Customers also have the option to keep the manufacturer's seats. Here's how the vehicles are converted.
When a vehicle arrives at the shop, it’s lifted 3 inches to accommodate a lowered floor, which allows the wheelchair to fit inside the vehicle. The original flooring of the vehicle is cut out and the frame is modified to make room for the newly lowered floor. Now an employee can install the lift pan and gull-wing door hinge while another modifies the door to fit the new configuration. Employees paint the new floor and the area near the door to match the rest of the vehicle. They install the hydraulic lift and wire everything to work with a remote control. The interior is put back together. The door is then attached and employees put the final touches on the vehicle. The entire process takes about six weeks.
The vehicles give people who use wheelchairs more freedom. Clint Lindemann, a quadriplegic, has a KZbin channel where he shows users the adaptive equipment he uses for hunting and fishing. His converted truck helps him get around more efficiently than a van.
Clint Lindemann: Since I’ve gotten this pickup, I’ve been able to do a lot more hunting and fishing. All my free time is spent driving around the outdoors of North Dakota, looking for deer and finding spots to set up bow stands and rifle hunts. The benefits, of course, of having a four-wheel-drive pickup in North Dakota is, by far, you can go anywhere pretty much. My van in the past was always breaking down. With the two-wheel drive in North Dakota, it was tough being around sometimes with it here, especially in the winter months.
Narrator: AT Conversions' vehicles start at $30,000.

all big vehicle manufacturers should make one model of suv like this for wheel chair people… if mass produced price will be much much lower i don’t think it’ll add more than $2000~$4000 compared to regular models if mass produced

Would be nice but majority of paralyzed people can't afford a used car let alone one that cost 32 grand more for this conversion. Dont get me wrong some can still work an such but the bigger % are mostly on disability income which isnt enough for monthly rent in most areas some simply can't find a job, some only knew physical labor, then you have the severe depression and so on. The few that have families support specially money are beyond lucky considering the amount of family members that try to make money off someone disabled in the family but these are just a few small details why corps don't do it. These converted trucks used are around 60 to 80 grand cheapest I've seen was 40k with 200k miles an cover rust.

I work on a farm which required me to use a lift from a company to lift me into the equipment, brand new the lift costs 40k. I however was able to get a deal on a truck with the lift installed for half the price (lift and truck combined). The catch to the deal was it was already used but in excellent condition however they offered me the same warranty as if the lift were brand new. Im sure the company could get you a deal.

Consider the cost of having a driver. This can be the difference between being dependent on others and having pride and independence. Able drivers experience this daily and should consider what it would feel like to be denied this freedom. This is an expense most of us are not used to but maybe not so much after all.

There are two huge drawbacks to these types of accessible vehicles. One is the price. My friend has a full size GMC truck which cost him roughly $50K back in 2019. Then he spent another $30K getting the conversion done with the gold wing door. So he has $80K invested in a pick up truck that he can drive. Oh, the other drawback is the mechanical parts of these conversions are anything but reliable. My friend has been stranded multiple times no thanks to parts and pieces breaking down on the conversion aspect of his truck. Good Lord......

@@theotherside931 I didn't say there's no truth to it, I said it's an overgeneralization. Yes, Healthcare and University Education is stupid expensive. I'll admit our manufacturing often lacks quality for the price. Looks at Tesla, top-dollar cars with quality issues. But those things are just one part of the bigger picture. Our education is expensive but it is the best University Education system in the world. Cars, electronics, gasoline, homes are all cheaper than in Europe or Canada. China knows cheap but they don't know quality. Every seen a Chinese car? Germany knows quality but they don't know cheap. Ever seen a cheap BMW, Volkswagen, or Mercedes? German cars have great engineering but they are often less reliable and less long-lasting than, say, Ford. While Toyota produces long-lasting vehicles at a low price, they lack the technology and features of American and German cars. Countries have distinct strengths and weaknesses. They aren't sports teams to be blindly loyal to. If you were to build these wheelchair cars in Germany and ship them to the United Sates, they would be good quality but *extremely* expensive. I don't think America is perfect or anything but I'll call out an anti-American bigot when I see one.

Just don't keep heavy items in the door pockets.... Truly is impressive though... 1 thing however... New Tahoe / Yukon / Silverado, etc... those are like $85K .... Not sure being handicapped just naturally comes with being rich as hell... sooooooo... you guys good to do this mod on a $2,000 03 Tahoe, that's more rust than metal? And good to do it on the cheap cheap? Maybe donate it? Because if not, I fear this is only for folks who can just blow over $100K cash money paper bills, and that's uhhh.. well... with hold ma beer 'Merica's natural way of being poor yet voting for the rich elite to become more rich and elite, already possessing more than 99% of the nations tangible wealth... with the rest literally splitting the crumbs of a sub 1% of the economy... well... what I'm getting at is the basic 'merican citizen, let alone a handicapped one that has had to deal with insane insurance premiums, pre-existing rule outs, lack of work, and a weekly income of less than $600... well... you know... not easy to just dump $100K plus on a pimp my ride like this. Not easy at all. . . And the folks that can afford it, well... they can probably just afford a freaking driver, live in staff, cooks, cleaners, etc.

Firstly, what is someone confined to a wheelchair going to do with the back part of a pick-up thing?
@strangeroamer3219
@strangeroamer3219 2 жыл бұрын
Haul material. I'm not disabled but I honestly prefer a cargo van. You can keep your tools and material locked inside. In a pickup people can just go and take what you have on the bed.

To be 100% Good. The car seat should be one with the seat in the stroller. This way the patient from the wheelchair will not have to go to the car seat, since the car seat will also be the wheelchair seat. For people with a lot of problems Such a construction will be 100% Good.
