What the narrator has provided is ABSOLUTE TRUTH. However he OMITTED the most important ingredient in the curry although he was so close to it....when Lloyd referred to One people, One nation and One Destiny he was referring to his mentor...the Great Linden Forbes Samson Burnham the then Prime Minister and Later President of Guyana... that is where his inspiration and encouragement came from!!!!

The state of west indies cricket these days is really sad. I recollect in my childhood, watching the West Indies bowlers in action during the 1983 world cup and during the 1983 India series that followed, with genuine fear, hoping that none of our batters would be injured. While listening to BBC test match special on shortwave radio during the 1984 England series, I really thought Andy Lloyd had died after being hit by Marshall. Scary stuff!

Wow the heyday of West Indies golden years never to return. . I was lucky enough to see West Indies win the first World Cup In 1975. I’ve seen the 1980s team. They were fantastic. Lloyd Richards Greenidge sobers holding Garner Roberts Marshall. I think our test team went 11 years unbeaten in a series. All thanks to the big cat Clive Lloyd. I’ve met Clive Lloyd twice, they don’t call him big cat for nothing his handshake is super big thick and strong.

In 1975 Wi lost to Australia 5-1. He took his lessons and then Kerry packer happened. He decided fast bowling was the way to go. He built his side around demonic fast bowlers. Roberts, holding, Daniel, garner, Marshall. And many more. Batsmen were only incidental to his plans. It just happened that they had world class batsmen. They ruled for two decades. It was also Windies undoing. An entire generation of new talent was wiped out. The Windies are suffering to this day. But still the greatest test team to the park.

Actually period of West Indies dominance started in 1950 although not apparent at the time when they beat England in a test at Lord's in London it was like their first overseas victory against at the time a very good England side. Then they rose up the ranks in 1950s and by 1960s it was evident they would be the best side in the world soon and they finally reached their peak under Clive Loydd in 1970s and 1980s when they were clearly at the peak of Cricket and best side in the world in all formats. The first inklings of WI dominance fading started with their shock defeat to India in 1983 World Cup final. Their inability to reach the final of the Benson and Hedges World Series in Australia an unofficial World cup in early 1985. Then another shock when they failed to reach the semi final and final of 1987 world cup. But these this decline was only in limited overs cricket. They were still number 1 in test cricket. Then the decline in all formats started when Viv Richards took over from Clive Loyd in 1990. England in 1989 had just been humbled at home by Australia in the Ashes and were expected to get thrashed in the WI. Instead England put in a good performance and almost levelled and with a bit more luck would have the series in 1989-90 in the Caribbean. The touring Australians followed in 1990-91 al most leveled and even won the test series in WI. All these were signs of WI decline in Cricket. Then WI toured England in 1991 and for first time in 15 years was unable to beat England in ENgland and it was a draw. Then in 1992-93 series in Australia came and WI pretty much struggled for most days of the series. However brilliant performances by Walsh, Ambrose and Lara gave WI a miraculous narrow one run lead test series victory a series they should have lost. However by early 1995 everyone predicted West Indies time in the sun in cricket would come to an end in the WI-Aus series in Caribbean in 1995 and so it proved Australia won in the Caribbean ending WI unbroken undefeated run in Cricket for 15 years the longest in test history and the curtain came down a golden 45 year period for West Indies Cricket starting with that overseas test win at Lord's in 1950 to their defeat in a test series against Mark Taylor's Australians. After 1995 West Indies never reached those heights again in Cricket except for a few t20 tournament victories and one or two semi final appearances in 50 over World Cups. But it was clear they were not the same force they were in Cricket that they were between 1950 to 1995 a wonderful 45 years where WI were the best and most entertaining team in Cricket. The most colourful, passionate and entertaining fans and most popular place for cricket teams to tour despite getting beaten by WI. I hope there is another WI era like the 1950 - 1995 era. But I am sure those days will never return for West Indies Cricket because while there is interest in Cricket in caribbean. The passion for the sport in West Indies has declined since early 1990s and is nowhere like they were between 1950 to 1995. So south asian teams especially India and Australia who are still strong will continue to dominate Cricket far into the future. Sadly for many cricket fans the dominant era of WI cricket 1950 to 1995 is well and truly over and is just a memory for any cricket fans over the age of 50. Younger cricket fans unless they watch youtube videos will never know how good the WI truly good they once were.

I don’t think Clive Lloyd was anti Indian, but I do think he was anti spinners and all rounders. After the West Indies beat the Aussies in the first World Cup , he was on cloud nine. However after Australia demolished the West Indies 5/1 it left an everlasting deep cut to his cricketing memory. West Indies fast bowling in the 1980s was magnificent. However I’ve always thought Jeff Thompson was the fastest and most intimidating fast bowler of all time.
