Well on the other hand, most people don't know that Cuties was known in the industry for a while so... Sundance gave a first award to Cuties for it's script back in 2017 and chaperoned the movie from the get-go which means they had all the time they needed to influence the director and producer of that little indie movie.

Wow, sensationalism beyond comprehension. The movie did a great job at disgusting the viewer and that's precisely what happened. Unlike some oversensitive folks @ YT, reviewers gave this movie benefit of the doubt in that it's brutal portrayal is something more than an appeal to pedos, which it is.

I just keep being reminded of how the director of the Babadook handled the main child actor. The boy was explicitly kept off set for any scenes depicting child abuse. The director was quoted saying she “didn’t want to destroy a childhood to make a film.” Future filmmakers: be more like Jennifer Kent.

To quote Article 1 of the German Constitution: '(1) Human dignity shall be inviolable. To respect and protect it shall be the duty of all state authority.' No matter the message, these girls were robbed of their dignity. Their parents approval doesn't change that fact. I'd think it's pretty much known that parents who want their children to be stars will do literally anything to get there, even if it means the total corruption of said child.

My main issue with this film - and I have a LOT of issues with it - is the way the message is twisted to make the girls the ones who sexualize themselves. As a girl, I received most male attention between the ages of 10 and 13. I was raped at 11 by a grown man. Many women have been catcalled and hit on from a young age. Most of us were NOT doing anything sexual. We were children, doing childish things and living in our own innocent worlds, when grown men decided that our bodies were open for exploitation. This movie makes it seem as if preteen girls are basically willingly playing into it all. It makes it appear as if this is the way it happens - you rebel against restrictive social norms by wearing tight clothes and doing sexual things in front of others. BUT THAT ISN'T HOW IT HAPPENS MOST OF THE TIME! Most of us were happily going about our business when suddenly, the world decided that we were sex objects. Women are often forced to grow up faster because that's what society forces on us, not because we want to. Fuck this movie for skewing reality, and fuck anyone who defends it.

I recommend watching video "The case of Roman Polanski". Before that I thought he slept with a young woman, being a child myself when it happened and not from the US. He actually drugged a 13 year old girl who was working for him and raped her anally. Probably not the only one either. Whenever he talks about the case, he refers to her as a "young woman", which makes you think she was 23, rather than 13. He feels no shame, telling that every normal man likes "young women".

@@Isthisjoebiden so i went back and watched it recently, and it did make me uncomfortable and afraid for the characters in movie. by the situations, that happened but at the same time i didnt find the dances as bad as people stated. it was cringey, but as a black man, the dances i see little girls doing on face book, with women i grew up with. or their older kids with kids, is way worse. ive seen them do some of this stuff at my kids school, and no one really says anything about it. so while i fully understand why people have an issue with this movie, the movie feels like a moot issues compared to whats really going on. the outfits the girls have on ive seen at my kids dance recitals, which is why i didnt want her to participate. i dont like cheerleader outfits, i dont let her where those super short shorts, but all her friends from school be wearing exactly that and worse at times after school. so im finding real hard to be more upset about this movie then i am at real life, seeing everyone drag the movie. when i never see anyone in real life commenting or being mad about seeing it everyday. then just remembering when i was teen and how many girls who were 15 with me talking to 18 to 26 yr old dudes, sometimes on the low and other times everyone including their parents knew and was ok with it. but in public outrage

@@kvdrr The children are far too young to be able to consent to this type of thing. And it doesn't matter if the parents consented, they are not the ones being exploited. I would question the credentials of any psychologist who thought this would be a good idea. The comparison with war movies and video games doesn't make sense whatsoever. They don't actually go around shooting real people when they make war movies. The director could've gotten this message across in a variety of ways without actually exploiting real children. It could be argued that those long, malingering shots are designed to evoke the exact reaction you're having to them: unease, disgust, revulsion, et cetera. The issue is they they're using real children to evoke those feelings. They could have hired a bunch of 18 year old CW actors who look much younger. It would have achieved the same gut reaction without exploiting underage children. I'd like to think the decision to hire actual 11 year olds was just a misguided attempt to be edgy, but in this industry you just never can tell, and the end result is disturbing in all the wrong ways regardless of intent.

That's quite literally where the issue is. Had they subbed out the child actresses for adult ones in the suspect scenes, there wouldn't be this continued outcry. If anyone would have still paid attention, the criticism would have stuck with it just being the movie's script instead of everything else dumped on it, rightfully so if you ask me. That way no one can call foul over the things themselves being depicted, since context can't save the film if that's the issue.

There's a concept in film called "gaze", which is basically what the camera chooses to linger on and how those shots are framed. The intentions of the camera are about as subtle as a battering ram.

Dan from Folding Ideas did a video about what is known as "ludonarrative dissonance", which is when what you're supposed to see in a scene in a movie is clashing with what you actually see. The example Dan uses is Megan Fox in the Michael Bay Transformers movies. We're supposed to see a young girl who knows her way around cars and can handle herself decently well around alien robots. What you ACTUALLY see is a hot chick posing seductively while examining a car's engine or detailing a motorcycle's paintwork. That's the dissonance. Cuties has a similar problem. If the purpose of the movie is to show that sexualizing children is bad, then it defeats the purpose to have multiple sequences of young girls dancing and posing seductively. It's basically CP disguised as a movie that shames one for liking CP.

honestly I think that was probably also a way the director wanted to add to the gross feeling you're supposed to get when watching the movie. How I understood it she wanted to bring the sexualization of children to an extreme to evoke the feeling of disgust any normal person would have when watching children act out scenes like these. So yeah honestly I think in theory it was "the right way" to get across what she was trying to get across, only that the idea of using real children and thereby actively taking part in what they're claiming to criticise is soooo fucking fucked up that I cannot believe there wasn't anyone during the whole f*cking production! who took a step back and thought "huh, maybe someone should stop this". Things that would've made this movie a lot less creepy: 1. Aging up the characters to be 18, possibly runaways from various hyperconservative religions with an emphasis on "purity." This has the added bonus of coming off less like Islamophobia and more like a criticism on how organized religion as a whole treats women and female sexuality. 2. Aging up the characters to ages 15 -17 and using adult actresses. This is what Mean Girls did, and that movie also touched upon the pressure girls feel to be sexual, albeit in a completely different way. 3. Making it an animated film, using adult VAs, and having a tone/framing that makes it clear that oversexualization is not healthy. 4. Using adult stunt doubles. Things that would've aided the message: 1. Going for a more centrist position. Making it clear that *both* complete sexual repression (barring sex-repulsed ace people because there isn't much to suppress, you're just ace, which is cool and valid) and hypersexuality are not healthy. Point out that both of these things sexualize and objectify women, just in different ways. Make it clear that demanding purity/twerkfest out of girls and women are both incredibly damaging to the psyche and to one's view of sex and sexuality. Make it clear that while a healthy exploration of one's own sexuality is normal, twerking on a guy who is easily 3 times your age is most definitely not that. 2. Read 1 again.

Mental abuse, you'll understand why later) These older people are in a position of power over these young actresses. The fact that they were in my mind forced to participate in this legalized CP film disturbs and disgusts me. I say mental abuse because this kind of thing from the auditions to the filming, to the release of the film will stick with them for the rest of their lives! No amount of money is worth the future stigma, hatred, and ostracization these young girls will have to face. The damage to their psyche and reputation has already been done. yeah. intent of the movie aside, a girl putting her nipples out on camera is gonna stay with her for the rest of her life, and im not sure a 12 year old understands that. as adults we have a responsibility to not let that happen to kids. id hate for the kids involved in this to feel ashamed and scared about it, and its backlash.

When the world needed her the most, Domee Shi gave us a much better alternative to Cuties that shows four girls coming of age and trying to become women without sexualizing them in the process of denouncing the hyper-sexualization of minors. Turning Red was about Meilin Lee facing the same challenges as Amy of navigating two different conflicting cultures, but Turning Red's execution of the idea is superior to Cuties because the main girl characters of Turning Red wear decent clothing at all times, have more personality than the main girl characters of Cuties, and still have a sense of childlike innocence at the end of the story. All of the backlash against Cuties reminds me why Turning Red is a great film and why nobody should complain about Turning Red again, because Turning Red got me to like Domee Shi for the miracle of making a kid-friendly version of the worst first-time film of 2020. Turning Red also knew how to write better main characters for us to like and condemn underage hyper-sexualization without making that the main focus of the story. Its message about embracing your wild side and honoring yourself while honoring your parents was more well-focused because Mei never sexualizes herself to get other kids to like her. As someone who bore a passing resemblance to Shirley Temple as a little girl the sexualization I faced from strangers and from adults who tried to get me alone was incredibly damaging. I wasn't abused by any of these adults because I had to learn how to outsmart these people as a means of survival. Regardless, if some yahoo like me who happens to look similar to someone who was a famous actress in the 30's was a target to sexual predators how does my experience compare to actual child actors? The times I've escaped exploitation of that degree haunts me every time I consider the girls who weren't as lucky as me. It's not exactly a hot take to say "hey this is fucked up" when discussing the sexualization of minors, it's safe to say that sexualization like this puts average children at risk even when they are not a part of instances like cuties.

It seems like the director didn't condemn the sexualization of preteens so much as just show it to us. Like "Here it is. That's it." The male gaze is entirely too prevalent to be considered condemnation. I think I understand what the director intended, but the filming choices leave the viewer feeling complicit in something we all know is wrong. Like we're watching it happen, so we must be okay with it. Makes people feel really gross. I can't understand why Netflix went through with it.

@@astroblast2325 yes that's the thing: I can totally understand the director's point in shocking us by showing what our (some) kids have become through social media pressure. But they don't do that out of the blue either, they copy adult behavior. But the people who green lit it like Netflix, the people apologizing the movie seem to apologize more for the softcore CP in it than the original message of the movie. And you're like wtf? What the movie tells us is that millions of girls have done all that in the secret of their room ALREADY (if not on a stage like in the movie) and the only sane reaction should be: what can we do to stop this madness? So the movie failed in it's core intent and shocked us for no result.

@@MrPloopi it's an important and super interesting concept that they did not have the capability or nuance to depict well, however that excuse only goes so far when I remember that it's legit exploitation of children! I can't decide if it's insidious or complete ineptitude (from a dangerous amount of people). There are ways to depict nuanced and uncomfortable things. Like you said, the girls are picking things up from adults or targeted media that makes young girls think maturity and worth comes from sex and/or the gaze of older men, pornography, tons of things, but the emphasis could be on the environment, conversations, the adults around them instead of continuing to (mainly) visually perpetuate the problem on a *severe* level. With smarter, less callous people I believe this movie could have been fantastic and unnerving without being harmful to young actresses. I said it in a different comment, but although I believe there genuinely were good intentions on behalf of the director, I can't believe the she "made something so disgusting and DANGEROUS when presumably knowing the affects and problems that hypersexualised media reaching children at a young age can do to a young person's development." We've all heard about those psychologists yet after such a big controversy, none of them have came forward to ease the anger and tell us about how things were handled, nothing, not a peep. So far, all we have is the word of the director that those kids were in a safe environment, nothing is proven. So yes, as long as no proof is given that those kids has been specifically told how their image would be used and that they understood what it meant, we must assume the worst because they are kids. 💔Cuties really breaks my heart, not only because it is a depressing melodrama that is inconsistent in wanting us to root for Amy while showing her to be a bad person we should hate, not only because it attacks its own message while making Amy's mom the antagonist for keeping her safe, but because Cuties is a hopeless, heartless movie with no innocence. It is about corrupted children who have bad parents and no childhood or childlike innocence, all while stealing the childhoods of the five tween girls who play the main characters. 😭 January 1, 2023, 9:26am

In my country, Czech Republic, people made a similar movie "Caught in the net" and it was executed far better than this absolutely disgusting piece of crap. I recommend watching that over this, they hired adult girls, made them look younger, built them rooms and they were catching pedophiles online and then catching them. (yeah the movie is more like documentary but, it's similar case). Also, I was sexualized when I was 13 so cuties made me feel sad for the girls, they don't know better, their parents are fucking useless in protecting their children.

This isn’t an issue about censorship. In fact, if you made the same film but animated and with actual, y’know, craft and artistic vision, this film might’ve been hailed as a classic. The issue is they endangered actual children to show their “message.” In fact, Emergence is so much worse in its content than Cuties, but the reason why the writer isn’t being hunted as we speak, is because it’s a manga made by one person with no children

SAO is one of the worst examples of how to handle a hardcore subject because they sexualized and tried to make jokes during many r*pe scenes. That's were most movies go wrong and that message that they try so hard to show dissappears. When they dance around the issue and instead of saying 'it's bad and very harmful' they show 'it's fun in the moment'.
