Ancient Egypt's 19th Dynasty has left a huge mark on their country's long history. Unlike their predecessors, the Ramessid's ability to produce a vast quantity of heirs made it seem like their dynasty would be one to last for centuries. However, this resulted in problems all its own, as infighting amongst Egypt's most powerful family began to tear them apart.
Odyssey is your journey into the world of Ancient History; from the dawn of Mesopotamia to the fall of Rome. We'll be bringing you only the best documentaries that journey into the mysteries and ruins of worlds long lost.

This might be my favorite episode presented by Curtis Ryan Woodside. He's present, but still professional. Now, if the sound quality could be made consistent, these would firmly be among the best Egyptology videos.

This is a great mix or informative and personal reaction, plus there are a lot of shots of places I haven't seen in the plethora of documentaries I've watched on ancient Egypt till now. @@sophroniel Yes. As you obviously know, but others might not, Curtis is an egyptologist plus an independant film maker who has making these documentaries for years. He seems to have sold a bunch of them to some of the really big channels, and it's just great to see! Bravo to him for this big step in what is bound to be a very successful career! It's a shame, but Curtis was just learning about making documentaries then. He is an Egyptologist and film maker who made all of his docs independently. Totally on his own, with no staff at all. Recently he sold a bunch of them to some big channels. But he has learned a ton over the years, so the newer ones are all much better done. You can tell which are newer from the start, because he's older and has cut his hair.

You should check out a series called Rohmer's Egypt from a few decades ago, he's a British Egyptologist, he was looking for it at that time, nearly ruined his life bankrupted him and I believe it caused his divorce. I liked his series. Later he recovered went on to make another series Byzantium heaven on earth which is a very personal exploration of that culture moving and sad. I regard it as a masterpiece. You can find it now on KZbin. If you watch nothing else ever again you'll be happy you saw it. T

The 19th Dynasty was not the first to cause it’s own destruction. The reign of PepyII Neferkare of the sixth dynasty, who ruled for around 94 years ( the longest reign of any king ever), due to the length if his reign, brought Egypt into a state of complacency, so with his death, his sons were ineffectual rulers and led to the end of the Old Kingdom, as they could not effectively deal with the climate change that was causing savannah to become desert, and the droughts of the Nile causing famines. The Muddle Kingdom was one of tumultuous upheavals leading to Civil War and the breakdown of Egypt back into upper and lower Egypt, regional governors vieing for greater power and the ineffectual guidance from religious priests. This lasted for over 300 years and so weakened Egypt that it could not repel the Hyksos Incursion into the Nike Delta, Circa 1750 BCE due to the Hyksos having the better technology of the light, spoked wheel chariot, horses and Tin / Bronze weapons.

The narrator has made some inexcusable errors for someone who is supposed to know about the period. For example, Merenptah could not POSSIBLY be wearing a necklace made of coins from Greece. Coins were not invented until almost SIX HUNDRED YEARS after his death. If I knew that, he should know it as well.

I'm afraid none can do more to misguided minds on facts than the "Mainstream Academia, the 19th and 20th Century Archaeologists and Egyptologists". I shall attach a clip from an article I prepared related to the subject. (Please note closing remark) I've come to realize that, in the present era, Academia must address and manage the facts of their content, particularly in the subject of History: *(1) Audit the current Content used in Education, Textbooks, and Resource Information.* *(2) Academia must further establish a method for clarification and management of established accepted facts and thus establish: 1. A Central Hub of History Facts, determined by the existing "Standards of Science and Research" and having certification through "Peer Review/Journal Publishing" 2. This would be best be served by establishing an Academic Association and Governing Board to oversee the History Hub, and the Association, and the Board respectfully, would include positions representing a variety of Academic Subjects: History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Sociology, Geology/Geo-Physics, Science, Physics/Quantum Physics, Genetics, Math, Legal/Judicial, Philosophy, Religion, Education and Research. , Note: A separate content that records the major "Theories" and where neither the 2 "Fact and Theory" be confused. Clarification: ▶ Summary reference for the "Standards of Science and Research" includes: "The mind is to be fully open and free of: Beliefs, Theories, Opinions, as these would interfere with the already proven 'Research Methodologies' used to reveal the greater facts from the data entered." + all relative content of artifacts and data are to be considered in the study/Research and applied to the analysis of the chosen 'Research Methodology' (the method of data analysis, Math, Statistical Theorem, Calculation method chosen.) *Present State of History:* The content is highly inconsistent, lacks valid resources, and is *compromised due to the lack of or all together ignoring of the "Standards of Science and Research", lack of an established System to Confirm, Certify, and Validate Facts, and lack of a Centralized Hub for Storing and Managing the Content Fatal Flaws in the Content used in History Education, Education Tools such as Books, Documentaries, and other Medias, and these largely accepted as Facts, are demonstrated in the following: ▶ The Academics that ascribe to *"Mainstream Academics"* actually stand in opposition to the "Standards of Science and Research" I having established a "Paradigm and Timeline" based on a 19th Century Theory, and they use this "Theory based Paradigm and Timeline" as if it were Fact. It has become their "Tool for Measure and Compassion", ignoring and/or discrediting all Theories, Artifacts, Fossils, Written and Oral Histories that don't fit or support their Paradigm and Timeline. This practice is also used in their Teachings and Writings, and largely without mention of the point, Theory. ▶ The Academics whom strictly adhere to the practice of the "Standards of Science and Research" are described as *"Authentic Academics".* Further Academic Certification is highly recommended to allow for greater ease in cooperation and providing a method for the Individual to establish a method for greater potentials in discoveries and successes in all areas of Academic Subject Expertise and Focus, particularly in the subjects of the Sciences and History. This subject is one that I have been focused on in my areas of degrees, Sociology and History: *"Establishing the Method of Academic Mature Mind Thought Process and the Wisdom Value".* cc:file/Mature/Thought/Habit/Behavior/20220701 bbartlett ___________________________ This was probably a bit more detail than you may be interested in, however, I hope it offers some point clarity that you might appreciate. I agree, I stopped watching early in the video after he said, "They went to battle against Lebanon, because they wanted ""Specific Trees"" which Lebanon would not give, so they went to war". Only a person who lacks understanding of the ancient times of this area would be clueless of the importance the great Cedar trees of ancient Lebanon. His lack of knowledge shows he is not only reading something but also is clueless of what he is reading, and the person who wrote what he is reading is clueless. To refer to the great cedars of Lebanon as a specific tree is insulting to a history buff like me. Not knowing this, is a major error in his credibility, and the credibility of this video. The Cedars of Lebanon were on par of today's great Redwoods in Northern California. This wood, of the forests of Lebanon were almost wiped out. No less than the great Solomon had them shipped in from Lebanon to build the his great Temple. Yet he lacks the basic historical knowledge of the trees that some ancients considered so awesome they were connected to the god's of the day.

You say Tausret was "cut down out of pure jealousy," when just previously a commentator detailed how Egypt's power was waning under her, enemies were encroaching, and economics were eroding. You talk about the end of the dynasty due to infighting, but don't substantiate it. We don't know if she was murdered. You also don't mention the insurrection by the Horite "Irsu" before Sethnakht, mentioned in the great Harris Papyrus I and presumably alluded to in the Elephantine Stele of Sethnakht - a further sign of weakening leadership. 'Gee, if only they'd have kept her on the throne, everybody would have been prosperous and safe' seems to be your thesis. More plausible is the idea that inbreeding spelled their doom, since Siptah MIGHT be seen as an example of that. Kudos for shedding light on this rarely mentioned period of their history, and the great facial reconstructions - although they might have been slightly more red-skinned. It seems you are taking the wrong lessons from it, however.

Copy of my share with another and relative to your point of reference to "Academic". Curtis offers an excellent energy to the subjects, but could be far more effective and successful with an understanding of the following. 💠 It was in response to a comment on Curtis being inaccurate on a few facts of History. *Although they were accurate, the greater point is: gaining the validated facts and the state of that being an "opportunity for Improvement".* None of my share is to be personalized, it is a defining of facts, situation, and offers resolution. @@PDaddy0120 Which facts ? As an old History student, it’s not because one or two person said it’s like that that it’s true. Even Historians between them debate things. Hollywood Westernize ancient Egypt too. If Egyptians were white with light colored hair they wouldn’t represent themselves in these colors. I said Egypt was invaded and ruled by other ethnicities as well in my previous comment. But appropriating a culture and History is not okay. Egyptians were never white, when me or anybody else say that, there are people who get angry. That only mean they think they look like europeans.

the quality of the video is great, the commentary is pretty good(there's been errors in every episode i've watched) and when just being narrated(well paced and told) , sounds great... then we get the fashion show and the bad audio *sigh*. i've watched a few of their videos now, as i do love egyptian history and they narrate it well, but sometimes i swear they're only doing some scenes just to display their fashion/modeling skills(don't get me wrong, their outfits are appealing and tasteful for the country they're being filmed in, makeup a bit strong, but well done) and it's distracting from the story they're trying to tell us. it has gotten better, but, 13:52 is exactly what i'm talking about. do we really need a shoulder hair toss to put brinkley to shame? it keeps making me question, are they doing this for his love of the history they're telling, or to get their face out there for modeling more?

I have to agree with you. It is very off putting! But I also have to add that show is very old, and his newer films are very much better in that regard, both on this channel and other channels, including his own. And I can't help feeling like I want to support someone who is learning on their own with no funds at all, and no camera man for almost all of it. The learning curve must be huge. I think he has read the criticisms of these old shows, because he seems to have improved in almost every way. And I'm happy he was able to sell even this old work to the bigger channels!

From the start, there are inaccuracies. While the background of the 18th Dynasty in general true, specifically, it is that Aye who was a distant brother to Amenhotep IV (Akhenaten) was a priest of the temple ofAmin, but because he was family was made a vizier to Amenhotep III and continued in those rolls under Akhenaten and Tutankhamen. Horemheb had been in named by Tutankhamen as his successor, but because he was the commander of the Egyptian army, was keeping the shaky peace at the Hittite border when Tutankhamen died, ( see Ultimate Tut), Ankhetsetamun, had refused Aye’s advances and sent a letter to the Hittite king requesting that he send a Hittite prince to be her husband and end the strife as this prince would combine the Egyptian and Hittites into one empire. The letter was found at 6he Hittite capital Hattusha.A prince was dispatched to do this, however en- route mysteriously died. This forced Horemheb to stay at the border while Aye hurriedly had Tutankhamen mumified. Aye then married Ankhesetamun, but quickly she fell from history? Aye then had all the possessions of the 18th Dynasty placed into the unfinished second tomb meant for himself, and sealed while he took over the throne. Once Aye died about four years later, Horemheb became Pharaoh, and appointed Ramses I as his successor and though he may have bern born at Avaris( Pitom), he had the name of the old Hyksos military stronghold Ramses. Ramses II was totally in control of the Levant through the battle of Kadesh with support from Israel, the vassal region , now Lebanon. The battle for the Cedar forrest was not for control but because the forrest was becoming denuded and Israel was trying to prevent the entire forrest from being cut down. The Mereneptah stele regarding Israel, would have been more likely a commemoration of Kadesh, than of the struggle over the forrest, as the Levant was under Egypt since the beginning 28th Dynasty with the Hebrews acting as the administrative judges.

Curtis has a youtube channel too! It's really interesting, and he started doing all this by himself! I do think the recreations are a bit too, uh... "white-looking". They were african, y'all, it's authentic to give them darker skin! Go to egypt today and it is very much a mix of dark, to dark olive tones and also some very light tones such as semites or people from the caucus areas. But at this stage I think the Pharaohs of the Ramisite era were, going from their features and wall paintings, darker skinned than how the are recreated here. Just a pet peeve of mine, sorry.

The ancient Egyptians were white, black, olive toned, and towards the end of the civilization, many ethnicities. All humans originated in Africa. Egypt is in Africa and it is also on the Mediterranean Sea. There were people that settled along the Nile who were Sub-Saharan African, and people who settled along the Nile who were Caucasian. Egypt was a popular place because of the Nile River. We can’t say that Egyptians were of one race. Egypt was a beautiful blend of skin colors.
