In 1958, an Italian archaeologist discovered the mummified remains of a two-and-a-half-year-old boy in a cave in southwestern Libya. But this was a mummy with a difference: it was far older than any comparable examples found in Egypt.
The culture that produced the mummy were cattle herders, and occupied much of North Africa, at a time when the Sahara was a savannah. Possible links with later Egyptian culture have also been found, including the representation in rock art of dog-headed human figures (resembling Anubis), and a type of pottery decoration later found in the southern Nile valley.
The mummy of a young boy, Uan Muhuggiag was destined for controversy. He was older than any comparable Egyptian mummy and his mere existence challenged the very idea that Egyptians were the first in the region to mummify their dead. Uan Muhuggiag was no one off. The sophistication of his mummification suggested he was the result of a long tradition of mummification.
The discovery raised some profound questions. Who were the ancient inhabitants of the Sahara Desert who put the mummy there? And what influence might those people have had on the glittering civilization that later emerged in the land of the pharaohs?
This fascinating film follows Italian professor Savino di Lernia and his colleagues on a trek through the Sahara in the search for answers - a journey that leads to some astounding conclusions.

Egypt was not the first or only ancient civilization in Africa. While many have tried to dismiss any advancements in ancient Africa, the truth is there were several advanced civilizations. One such example is Timbuktu where some of the earliest Universities existed along with an extensive library.

But there is genetic differences between North Africans and sub saharan Africans.. Mummy dna testing shows.. So Far they were related to the middle easterners 🤷‍♂️ there may have been black african peoples much older than the Egyptians across the sahara who developed the technique of mummification and interacted with the early Egyptians, seems more logical .

Poldark Godzilla 1978 Mm, you perceived my comment as victimhood, when I was only making the allusion as to hardly any credit is been given to subsaharan influence in Egypt. In the video itself, the context of which shows amusement as something strange as a so called black mummy dating even before the annals of Egyptian mummery is something to be amused or surprised about? I’m thoroughly acquainted with the dynamics of population intercrossing and relations, as witnessed in my own genetic mixture which is composed of 8 a percentage of eight different ethnicities (African = Northern, western and eastern; Asian = Turkish and Iranian; middle eastern, central and northern Europe) so goes the skin tones from black, dark brown, light brow which seems white and is not, so the features and textures of our hair..... is what you can find among my siblings. That science cant lie? May be not the experimental data, but so may do the individuals whom because of prejudices and other motives forge lies into the findings, making them conclusive.

Sure. …. buuuuuut we also need to take a moment here to really revel in the irony of people claiming Egyptians have been “white-washed” with “rewritten history” … while gleefully erasing a whole group of people, their culture, and rewriting history for their own westernized sociopolitical views due to their ideas Africa = one certain skin color, therefor all Egyptians = that skin color because it’s located in Africa, and this documentary is somehow furthering their own biases because all they see and hear is about a certain skin color being discussed, tuning everything else out…. as if no M.E. groups never ever ever existed and that there totally isn’t a massive difference in the people and cultures on said continent. Or that no other cultures outside of the western ones have never ever studied this ancient civilization to come to the same conclusion as everyone else. I mean, it’s truly amazing to see so many comments peddling such nonsense because it really shows how people refuse to acknowledge any history or science because it doesn’t align with their own extreme views that they learned about via the internet’s extreme corners of rhetoric. It’s worth pointing those types out and ridiculing them. I mean, if the last few years are anything to go by, it’s wise for everyone in society as a whole to be very, very cautious of those peddling their beliefs rooted in nonsense that goes against science and data lol. It’s best we call that ish out and not let it continue when it’s just more extremism under the disguise of “truth”, no?

Allow your enemies to tell your story and they will control the narrative. Like they will have you believing that Egypt isnt in Africa, or that ancient Egyptian weren't indigenous, and that darker tribes of Africa did not seed what we know to be the more civilized people; and that many archeologists already know this to be true.

What? Enemies? No enemies here, nor bk then. Did you watch the entire video? They spoke of a “peoples” in the past intermingling & sharing ideas. Such as friends do! Like pottery designs & worship & how they buried their dead. Please stop trying to stir trouble or hate. After all this world has been thru these last few years. Seriously! Can we not get over ourselves & spread kindness & care for each other? Instead of so easily trying to point out some kind of discord or creating some. Let us not try to find fault in our fellow man & learn to cherish our fellow man & neighbor. If we search for anything, wether it be our next door neighbor or someone on the other side of the world. Let us first search for something good & seek to be kind to others & pray for each other & yes, for even those that seem to be our enemy. I think this old world needs that right now, I really do. I will start with myself. Bless you!🙏🏻🙏🏻

@@d.b.4201 What they are regurgitating isn't much different from the racist Egyptology, white supremacy, ideologies of the past. In the pre Egyptology early days, Ancient Egypt was dismissed as a cheap black, imitation of Mesopotamia, Greece (Macedonia) was lauded as the cradle of civilization but only to findout later, the Greeks accredited Ancient Egypt as progenitor of their civilization. The racists, in haste, convened and setup Egyptology as the midwife, the conduit for their agenda to move Egypt out of Africa to justify their racist intentions towards Africans. Egypt now became a northernish European white civilization. The next wave was white Mediterranean civilization, then next, Mediterranean/Caucasian, and now it appears, from the charity of their hearts, how generous of them, they will class it as a mixed race population that sprang from deep Africa; implying whites were there, in deep Africa, in equal numbers to blacks, how ridiculous

Why is this surprising to anyone? 🙄 What we call ''Africa'' is the continent of Black/African peoples. Ancient Egyptians were originally Black Africans and mixed over time with peoples from the east through conquests and reconquests. The Egyptian empire originated to the south in the Sudan region, and were Black African people. Because of the Eurocentric education that has been propagated throughout the world over the past millenia, people are now shocked to learn the truths that common sense could have allowed them to see. 🙄

@Witch Chan I guess agriculture started between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. You know people say cultures originate near rivers. I've always wondered why didn't nobody ever questioned why it's couldn't have originated between the Congo and Nile Rivers. Lake Albert and Lake Victoria are between both rivers. It is lake Tanganyika to the south. It's hypothesized that some of the first modern homosapiens originally came from the Tanzania area. But it's just me wondering. I just noticed that the Zulu of South Africa wore the same cheetah skins like the high priest of ancient Egypt. But the Egyptian added the linen wrap but I've seen pictures of pastoral communities that wear it that way too. Plus a lot of things that were assumed to be crowns were actually hair styles. You have to have coils and curls to create those looks. I've had to totally be skeptical of the traditional information about ancient Egypt.

A long time ago i read some articles about Nilotic peoples who had been mummifying their chieftains for a long time, but apparently anthropologists assumed those tribes had learned the techniques from the Egyptian culture. This seems to be a real challenge to that assumption and it could likely be the other way around.

Egypt is a country in the continent of Africa bordering the Nile. Its immediate neighbors are Sudan, and Libya. Its people have adopted customs from its neighbors, especially the Nubian culture, and these cultures have in turn been fed throughout history by all of Africa. Throughout its history, there has been intermarriage and shared learning between Egypt and its other African neighbors. We, the rest of the world, can only marvel that Africans and African nations continue to exist, survive and even thrive despite the relentless assault on its peoples. They are the cradle of all life, as science has proven.

I'd think it quite likely that the saharan culture and egyptian cultures are the same. With the Sahara turning into a desert the eastern part of the saharan culture likely settled in the Nile valley, mixed with the locals and developed into the egyptian culture. So it's less of a "who came first" and more of "where did it all start".

it is logical that when the Sahara dried up , people would have moved to the Nile valley and west Africa. Some of the musical instruments seen painted on walls in Egypt are still used by various people along the Nile valley , west Africa and East Africa.

What I dislike the most about these 'explorers' is that they do not acknowledge local communities are the ones who showed them these places because there is no damn way Europeans could have 'stumbled' upon things here and there in the middle of an African desert or known of the mummy in the first place. How about they give credit to locals who discovered, preserved and shared the mummies? Also, we are going to need that mummy back with us here in Africa.

How has education fallen so far by the wayside? When I graduated from HS, the local HS diploma was equivalent to many schools’ 2 yr degrees. (In 1970, in a rural school in the Western US) Then, came the “dumbing down” of many schools for many reasons... ALL nonsense! If one is behind, ask the teacher to assist you in catching up! My family moved quite a bit after the end of grammar school. When I discovered my high school offered Latin, I begged; although beginning 6 weeks into the semester might have been an issue, the teacher gave up her lunch break to bring me up to speed. Being motivated helped, too! (No such luck w Algebra. I despised the instructor & hated the topic. Not a good combo! In fact, I think it took me until my late 30s to appreciate Math, again! Bad teachers, especially those who demean students, often cause life-long damage to their self worth & ability to learn anything related to the subject. A really INVESTED teacher has been known to change lives!

They were probably the same peoples who did the rock paintings in the Lybian desert. My late father was in North Africa during WW2. He was a flight crew chief and airplane mechanic, and he belonged to the same bomber group as the men of the famous plane Lady Be Good. My dad talked about these paintings. He also mentioned that flying over the desert, you could see what appeared to be the remains of what looked like villages or towns. Asked had anyone explored these ruins, and he said due to their location and other things, as far as he knew no.There is a lot about the history of Africa we don't know. Wwe may know about Egypt and Kush, because they left written records, and were mentioned and known of by other peoples. The other peoples of Northern and other parts of Africa, not so much. Plus the romans and greeks were running around there as well, so these people were a mix of races.

A islamised King who lived around 1300 AD, native to Mali called Mansa Musa traveled from Mali to Mecca to pay he’s respects to allah. Can you see how your geographical theory is pure ignorance?

THE minister of egyptian antiqueties Zahi Hawas Said last year that the Origins of the egyptian civilization clearly originated in Africa, he further says that these were many different African tribes forming Egypt and later on came THE migration from West asia. Just look att THE pharao Menes statue and youll see that he has a typically African phenotype. In THE 60s there was a group of black egyptians coming to America but America didnt allow them to identify as black egyptians but only as arabs even when its a lie. These egyptians protested againgst the American government in the matter willing to be identified as black egyptian. Go tell Them that their egyptian ancestors aint egyptian, go tell Them that they aint from Egypt. Leave African history alone its non of your buissness to dictate another people's history-- your ancestors did enough and now eveeubpdy are confusee. We have the science of Antropology and DNA. We absolutely know the race of all of the mummies that have ever been found. None of them were Sub saharan African (Black). You are letting skin tone and race get mixed up. The races of mankind are different down to the bones, especially the skull. It's how forensic sculptors rebuild a skull and show what the person looked like. Anyone like myself, who has a knowledge of Anthropology, can tell what race a skull is from 30 feet away. There are no secrets. The Egyptians were not black, even though a lot of African Americans want them to be.

Thus Black African were first population of that Libya, and modification was used by the boy's community before it started in Ancient Egypt. As argued by Pr Cheikh Anta Diop at the UNESCO 1974 colloquium held in Cairo Egypt on "the culture and origin of Ancient Egyptians", Ancient Egyptian culture stemmed out from Black African peoples culture, in southerner areas of Africa: Egyptians referred to Nubia, Koush or Sudan, or maybe the Great Lacs region, as the land of Gods, their gods, their origins, cradle. You even found more pyramids in Sudan region...probably more ancient that Egyptian ones.

For the thousands of years of their reign they built and ruled it all on the backs of slaves. Soooo good luck with that bit of irony. There are two components of the Egyptian civilization and people...both are African/Black.. #1 the riverine Nilotic Africans/Blacks with roots far to the south in the Great Lakes region #2 the Saharan Africans/Blacks west of the Kemet (Egypt) The Saharan Africans migrated east to the Nile Valley as the Sahara became desert and merged with the Nilotic Africans and gave birth to the ancient Egyptian state...it was most likely the Saharan Africans/ Blacks that brought the science of mummification to Kemet...as I have stated repeatedly...there is no such thing as "Sub Saharan" Africans since Africans/Blacks inhabited ALL of Africa, including northern Africa from the Atlantic ocean to the Red Sea...the caucasoids in northern Africa are NOT Africans...they are but mere migrants and invaders hence the reason their DNA is always lumped in with "middle eastern" DNA since that is where they originate...

I dont understand all the speculation going on in this video, on one hand you have archaeologist wondering about the "Black" mummy child, and how it may relate to Egyptian mummification techniques. Then you have other archaeologist asking about the Sahara and who the "mummy" child's people may have been. Here is a novel thought, at one point in the Sahara you had groups of people connected by a vast inland sea, the fish, hunted and traded with one another. Then at some point the Sahara grew to arid for large scale human habitation, so the people moved. Some went North, some went south, others went South West, and others went North East into the head waters of Nile, the great lakes region of Africa and down the Nile. It is no mystery as to who his people were, so why beat around the bush? The video lost me when the archaeologist went on to describe all how black people from the south moved into the Sahara and white people from Near East migrated into the Sahara, right then and there is proof that archaeology holds fast to its dogma and Eurocentric ideals. We are to believe that "dark" skinned Africans ("black") people managed to walk out of Africa into the Near east and skirt the coast line Asia into Australia but some how managed to skip a large portion of their continent until about 10k years ago? Now i know this video is not up to date and does not have the latest Genomic testing that shows lighter skin only evolved about 8 thousand years ago, but come on how about a little common sense here? The ending of the video is why many, many many groups of POC have a huge issue with Europeans interpreting their history, instead of saying what is glaring obvious they tap dance around the subject. Clear evidence shows where the culture and customs come from, archaeological evidence tells you where the first ruler of a United Egypt came from and yet they refuse to say it. This is what breeds the mistrust in Europeans their refusal to acknowledge the evidence that their science and their methods present to them, they always hedge their bets.

@@kkjppt5359 even you took cows and sheep arriving at later date, it still would not explain how animal husbandry was quick to take, in my opinion and a lot of other's opinion including some archeologist anthropologist, animal husbandry was not all that uncommon in Africa. So how did pastoralism get started in Africa? Currently most archaeologists think wild ancestors of today’s domestic cattle, sheep and goats were first domesticated in the “Fertile Crescent” of the Middle East. Archaeological research shows herding began to appear in and spread from what is now Egypt around 8,000 years ago. By 5,000 years ago, herders were burying their dead in elaborate monumental cemeteries near a lakeshore in Kenya. Two millennia later, pastoralist settlements were present across a wide part of East Africa and by at least 2,000 years ago, livestock appear in South Africa. It is my contention that when people think of the Fertile Crescent, they automatically think that the people that were there 10k years ago, are the same people there today, I personally do not believe this. I think the people that were there 10k years ago, are from the people we find in North East Africa from the great lakes region all the way into Egypt, so animal husbandry was picked up rather quickly because they all shared some cultural connections. This is my opinion and i believe it will bare out eventually. Because animal husbandry spread so quickly through out Africa, this also shows that the people living in Egypt both lower and upper spread southward and westward with their cattle looking for better grazing, and only later ( for unknown reasons) did they become isolated from each other. theconversation.com/ancient-dna-is-revealing-the-origins-of-livestock-herding-in-africa-114387 link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10963-010-9042-2

He classified himself as an Africanist. Meaning that he takes an African-centred perspective and has worked with many important African archaeologists based in Africa. His specialism is ancient West Africa, the Holocene period of the Green Western Sahara. When I asked him why academic archaeologists are reluctant to just state the obvious, his response was a) they feel that it’s controversial to say it, b) it might be seen as racist and c) no one in the mainstream is interested in hearing about that. Well yes that's what makes perfect sense...but they keep denying it,and claim ancient Egyptians were Mediterranean, middle Eastern and Eurasian, despite what the ancient greeks and Romans said about the original ancient Egyptians. Of course ancient Egypt was invaded by outsiders just like the rest of north Africa which changed the race of the populations there...but for some reason this is completely ignored. And of course the fact that Nubian kingdoms were already established before ancient Egypt, and the ancient Egyptians having so much in common with the Nubians is also ignored, and in some cases denied, makes it frustrating for those who know the truth. Unfortunately most people who write African history were also the oppressors of Africans. So it's kinda like the Nazis teaching us Jewish history.

I always look at their hieroglyphs and think to myself, those people are literally the same shade of brown as me but for some reason... Europeans say "They aren't black." It's interesting since I am unmistakably a "black" person.

Also Europeans had culture to keep the wealthy inside because they thought darker skin meant you worked outside. More white = less work outside. The Egyptians i doubt weren't that much off as well. In time humans as a whole got white due to lack of sun. People in Greenland have had these effects.

F' Gaddafi. Gaddafi was an Arab imperialist. Let's not forget he funded wars in Liberia, funding rebels who slaughtered, raped and dismembered Black children. Or what about when he tried to war with the Black Chadians. Put a halt to allying yourselves with these Arabs in Northern-Africa. They do not like Black-Africans. Never did. Never will.

There was a photo taken of the mummy at the time of discovery and the remains were in much better and even much more intact condition then than they are now. Now the remains are broken up and so is the necklace. R.I.P. baby boy.

@South African life, Many of ancient Egyptian traditional customs, such as rituals; dress codes, hair styles, ceremonies and more others can be found and some are still practiced across Africa today. And to be honest, almost all Europeans know this fact but they never acknowledge it. it's just pathological prejudice!

Anyone who pays close attention to acheologists and Egyptologists can determine that mummification wasn't someting the ancient Egyptians cliamed they "invented," they simply did it. Just because we think they invented it doesn't mean they claimed to have begun it.
