One thing about how Oda handles trauma that I do appreciate that you didnt touch on is that he shows trauma is not an excuse for bad behavior even as a "good guy". A lot of stuff screws this part up by going "Well you had a sad past so everything is forgiven" *stares at Naruto as a whole*. Sanji regularly gets called out for both his willingness to throw his life away and his refusal to hit women, Usopp's snake oil salesman shtick in Wano ends up having Toko try to use it on her dead father as Usopp watched, Zoro is constantly screamed at by Chopper when he pushes himself too hard, Luffy said Hancock makes him sick after she abuses her power over the ladies of Amazon Lily (the story literally framing her as a villain during this stretch), etc. Luffy not caring about people's backstories at all plays into this. Wherever youve come from may explain how you are how you are but it doesnt mean fuck all if it leads to more pain for others.

Ya that's one thing I couldn't stand about Naruto. How all the horrible things that the villains did is just waved away because they had a hard time. Hitler had a rough childhood and early adulthood too doesn't exactly excuse anything he did ok. One piece definitely tackles trauma in a good way. Trauma can shape you but it doesn't have to define you. That you can rise above it.

EXACTLY. This is why I hate it so much when fanboys/fangirls just brush aside all the terrible things their fav did on the basis "he didn't do it because it is him" no IT IS HIM. He made the choices! He still did all of those! Don't think he's free from all blames because of such and such. Your REASONS shouldn't be an EXCUSE! And people shouldn't be forced to bear with it! I cringed a lot seeing marvel fangirls defending Loki and Bucky like they're without faults. They do have their faults in their bad actions, the excuse of "they're controlled!" Should matter but it shouldn't make them entirely blameless. Like how fangirls painted Tony as completely the bad one for wanting to arrest Bucky and completely brushed aside Tony's trauma knowing Bucky killed his parents under the reason "he's not himself!" No! That's not how human relation works! Regardless of what, Bucky still did it and Tony had every right to lose his composure in rage. Rather, it's Captain America's holy fatherness in regards of his friend that disgusted me. Which was why I was firm on Team Iron Man when Civil War was first launched. In Naruto too, I couldn't fathom just how many people blamed all of MADARA'S actions on TOBIRAMA. It's as if Tobirama is the master puppet behind the scene that made Madara did all of those horrible things, and by extent even Obito's corruption and subsequent happening is all blamed on that fateful moment when Tobirama killed Izuna in A FCKING WAR. Everything is on Tobirama! Sue Tobirama for having his own traumas and distrusts to Madara Uchiha in particular because of years of war, how dare Tobirama has trauma?! He should have treated Madara with complete trust and faith just like how Hashirama did it! Only Madara is allowed to have trauma because he lost Izuna to Tobirama! It's not like Tobirama had to bury a little brother and numerous cousins that died due to Uchiha (the youngest of Senju brothers, Itama, was MURDERED by FIVE ADULT Uchihas!) screw Tobirama for being distrusting, no? Screw him for being the cautious one to Hashirama's optimistic view. I mean, I won't say Tobirama is a complete angel either, he had his own flaws, he created nearly all the jutsus in forbidden scroll, the reason why Edo Tensei was available at all. But he becomes like a trash dump to dump all the blames for all the Uchiha maniacs. Naruto made nearly EVERY of its villain was defined by traumas or act because of trauma. Obito was the most pathetic one yet people praised his character. Ew. I'm just appalled by the fangirls completely forgiving and giving him a pass for all the terrible things he did (HE KILLED KUSHINA! THE MC'S MOTHER WTF?! He didn't succeed because Kushina was a rare Uzumaki and could withstand th extraction of her bijuu, STILL he willingly did that to the woman WHO TOOK CARE OF HIM when he was a child! He's EVIL. In the same night, he also killed an innocent midwife and the wife of 3rd hokage). No! He's not forgiven and a good guy just because "he was manipulated by Madara's lies"! He willingly killed people and was about to kill a baby! All because his crush died! WTF?! Just because Naruto performed Talk no Jutsu to him and he suddenly regretted all his decisions, that didn't make him redeemable AT ALL. He KNEW better. Unless he'd never been taught kindness since he was born, he was responsible for all of those destructions! He SHOULDN'T be redeemed! Shouldn't even be in MC's side at all! Uchiha fanboys/girls are the worst existence in Naruto fandom. And don't get me start on Madara, that freak. He's a good maniac villain, certainly by choice not by circumstance. Like Doflamingo, he's villain by choice, not circumstance. I just HATE Naruto forgives people because they have traumas. That would be like Luffy forgiving Doffy for having traumas and we all know how Luffy didn't like Doffy. Heck, he was against helping Crocodile at all in Impel Down until Iva persuaded him. That's like saying Arlong's bad deed is valid because fishmen experience racism. NO!

@@rachelciel3330I mean I'll fight you on the Cap/Tony/Bucky situation. Bucky was actually mind controlled and couldn't choose otherwise. When Tony asks him if he even remembers his parents, Bucky says "I remember all of them" and Sebastian Sean really plays up the fact that Bucky doesn't blame Tony at all for wanting him dead, even if it wasn't explicitly his fault. Tony earned an emotional reaction, but killing Bucky wouldn't accomplish anything good and Cap stepped in for it. I would say Wanda in WandaVision would be the better one to talk about for this kinda thing. "She lost her boyfriend so it's understandable that she would kidnap an entire town and use it to enact her fantasies all the while the citizens are completely cognizant of themselves being puppeted by this psychotic eldritch woman" and then the story framing that as if she's making a noble decision to STOP doing that, literally saying "They'll never know what you gave up for them" as she is talking to the woman who brainjacked hundreds of people for months. I'm always down for helping fellow Naruto survivors vent though. You forgot how Naruto also forgives Kurama for killing his parents directly and by choice, no Obito hypnosis on him for when he skewered Kushina and Minato. Also Orochimaru as a whole in Boruto. Just let crazy uncle Ninja Mengele hang out in the corner there STILL DOING ILLICIT IMMORTALITY SCIENCE AND CLONING CHILDREN TO SEND TO OUR CHILD SOLDIER SCHOOL, WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG? As for Tobirama, the most fucked up thing Kishimoto put in that fucking story is the actual defensible position of "No yeah Tobirama was right, all the Uchiha ACTUALLY have to go because of their GENETICALLY EVIL BRAINS". Fucking hell that series is the gift that keeps on giving in terms of ranting about terrible storytelling.

@@FayeLawnKrack3d I had this debate the other day regarding Kaido and Big Mom, both of whom had a life of trauma, but from their pasts became monsters. You can sympathize with a character's plight, but at some point they become irredeemable from their actions. Compare that with Shigaraki from MHA, another villain with a tragic past turned homicidal maniac bent on total destruction, yet somehow Deku still thinks he can save him.

I mean...none of us get out alive. We're torn apart and tattered until we simply cannot live anymore. Some people get longer than others, which is why stories like these are much more valuable, relatable and interesting than flowery fun stories about ideal lives where every ending is a good one. The goal isn't "happily ever after" that's impossible in an entropic system, the goal is the least painful exit possible.

@@kilderokway i see it, the fear of the future and fear of the past are the same thing. you’ve gone 13 billion years not existing, a return to form isn’t so terrifying. entropy isn’t chaos to be feared, it’s just everything settling down back into a nice calm order before the next boom. this time around, we’re only given this short stretch, but there’s nothing sad about that. it’s wonderful! the universe makes an exception to the way it’s treated us for billions of years, if only for a moment, so that we can soak in all the highs and lows and beauty of everything. to me, there’s nothing to fear in returning to what we once were, only this brief opportunity to fully experience what we currently are. perhaps that’s overly romantic and optimistic, but hey, it’s something to think about.

I can expand on that and make it kinda sad: he cracks those jokes a lot to ease tension. In others and himself concerning his condition. In many instances he's been seen acting a fool as soon as someone around shows unease or fear or curiosity. He doesn't want to scare people, so his kneejerk reaction is to make sure people see there's nothing to fear by acting like a clown. He was horrified at his own reflection and that hasn't changed much, it just shows less often on the surface now. There's one episode where he attempted self deprecation and ended up hilariously enough hurting his own feelings. XD; Dudes damaged and he uses comedy is a bandage.

I AM a psychologist and this is spot on, I've always been really impressed by how he shows how events in your early life can lead to certain personality traits. Like you said, it should be simple writing 101, but he really does it in a way beyond the shallow ways you usually see Edit to add: Sanji has more sustained, chronic trauma and would be likely to have C-PTSD (complex) and comorbid depression, whereas Ussop is affected by one traumatic event. I wouldn't say he really has PTSD symptoms but you can still see how that one event affected him. Robin has both, because her childhood truly sucked. PTSD through the destruction of Ohara - hence her panic responses to things that remind her of it, like Kuzan and CP9 - and complex through the constant backstabbing and attacks afterwards - hence her avoidance of close relationships, intense feelings of hopelessness, etc. Either Oda was somehow keeping up to date with developments in the western world of trauma psychology, or he just innately understands this stuff in the way a lot of people can't

Not realizing you've been hurting from something and being able to talk about it nonchalantly is so true. It's difficult getting insight on yourself because your brain wants to protect you from the bad memories, but talking enough about traumas with other poeple you trust and are close to often makes you more aware of how bad things were. It's so important to open up to others about things you've consciously or unconsciously struggled with to realize how bad you've been feeling and to then be able to heal from it.

Ace and Luffy was a huge impact on me when watching the show. Ace wondering if his life is worth it and if he should have existed to wanting to be remembered and being thankful for simply being loved. Luffy rather wanting death then loneliness, always having a smile on his face and acting like a child but being so emotionally aware of others that their pain sometimes feels like his own. These two brothers had such a huge impact on me that I still cry when thinking about how Ace died even though it's been 8 years since I first saw it. For someone to have been so deprived of love and confirmation that they are worth it to thank others for loving them is such a tragedy and really shows the effect of the government and the people.

I grew up reading One Piece, set it down for some years, and then re-read it as a 20-something year old. And on my second big read through, I absolutely fell in love with Franky's character. The speedo and pervert jokes were just much funnier to me as an adult than as a teen, but more than that I just loved that whenever I was crying over stuff in Water7 and Enis Lobby, this idiot Franky was too. Then what really got me hooked and deciding that Franky was my absolute favorite Strawhat was the scene in Thriller Bark when the Mini Merry was revealed. It was just such a gentle and considerate and loving thing for Franky to do for his newfound family who were nursing a grief he couldn't fully share in. But the man is empathy incarnate and he shows it in his actions. There is precious little in this world that I find more beautiful than the balm of considerate compassion applied to a grieving soul. And that beautiful empathy and consideration is something that reminds me of my beloved husband and makes me love Franky so much! It's also great fun to show said husband clips of Franky out of context and tell him that this character reminds me of him. Anyhoo, thanks for another lovely video Melon! So looking forward to the Luffy video, but take as much time as you need.

Mini-Merry was the moment I knew I'd love Franky. I was genuinely really, really sad that the Merry sank and didn't want to accept the Sunny as its replacement. Then Franky reveals the Mini-Merry. It's not only a moment where Oda is giving us closure by not ignoring what the Merry meant to both the audience and the Straw Hats, but it shows Franky's heart. He cried like a bitch during the Merry's funeral and he only knew it existed for not even a few days. He respected the little ship so much he not only based his own dream boat on it, but made a little miniature boat because it clearly meant a lot to the crew. It seems stupid to obsess over a boat like this but it shows Oda's real genius. You could really tell he was emotionally invested in the Merry too with that scene

I think one of the best things with One Piece is the fact even though everyone has trauma, Oda makes sure that the trauma isn't their whole personality. Brook faced his entire crew perish and his love to see Laboon keeps him going but he doesn't make his entire character just wishing to see Laboon and nothing else. Unlike Naruto for example, Sasuke became much more likable after he resolved his whole trauma with Itachi, but was otherwise a very one note character imo before that resolution.

I once told someone that I really relate to Robin in a lot of ways to which they responded, "What, you're being hunted by the government?" No. But I know what its like to feel like the only way out of a bad situation is death. I know what it feels like to be betrayed over and over again. And I know what it feels like to be lonely. Luffy declaring war on the world for his friend is something I will never forget because it gave me hope that, like Robin, I could also find people who care deeply for me. I feel that One Piece has taught me a lot of empathy since i started watching it, and I'm thankful that i did so 17 years ago. But also, One Piece has always felt like the warm hug and group of friends I always wanted and needed. I connect with so many character: Sanji, Ace, Luffy, Robin, Usopp, Law, Big Mom...but i feel that nobody hurt as much and wasn't so tailor made to understand how i felt as Brook. Because even if it was in a completely different level, the feeling of all consuming loneliness that can take a hold of you to the point that it can drive you mad was something i was experiencing at the time. And seeing his joy to live coming back, how easily he got attached to the Strawhats, especially Luffy, how devoted he is to them, to help them, to see them thrive, and how thankful he is to just have them in his life while he marches to fulfill his and Luffy's goal, is one of the things that make me the happiest and the most thankful for stumbling into this silly pirate story

Oh also yes! I too relate to Brook a whollllle lot. Spent most of my adult life alone. 20 years of isolation braaaaaain damaaaaage! I can't and do not ever want to know what 50 years of it is like. It's crazy how you just start losing the ability to converse, even if you're linguistically gifted. You talk to yourself a lot, it starts out in your head only, but soon you notice you're talking to yourself out loud. You being living in your head more than in the real world. It erodes your hunger to be around people considerably too after a while. Sudden exposure to people becomes exhausting where it wasn't before. You become "socially out of shape" I suppose. I no longer ever feel like I'm part of a gathering, just observing them from the outside. It sucks. Other Brook things I can relate to: Also a musician, also been helpless to save loved ones from death. Would befriend whale if I had the chance. Yo ho ho ho!

Hilariously enough, one of my childhood traumas made me a good listener to others troubles by hearing my mothers troubles starting at the ripe old age of five. Imagine, being fresh out of toddlerhood and suddenly, you're your mothers therapist hearing all her horror stories over coffee. Wacky! One of those blessing and a curse things I suppose.

big mom is one of my favorite antagonists. her story is complex and i really empathize with her. her 'villain' side, imo, is very rooted from the fear of being alone or abandoned due to the 'disappearance' of her found family. she might be old, but she still has a childlike confusion to her which is super sad. she just wanted family and streusen manipulated her fear to hate and greed ☹️ im big moms #1 fan 😍

Tony Tony Chopper. I fell in love with the story way before his introduction, I wasn't the biggest fan of his first design, but oh my gods... I'm tearing up just typing this, becauce Chopper's backstory means so much to me. His arc of going from "I'm a monster" to "I want to be a monster who can help others", with the gut-wrenching realization that he can and did hurt those close to him? I see myself in that. I have so much self-hatred because of things outside of my control (undiagnosed neurodivergency and poverty growing up) and because my attempts to reach out only making stuff worse. I thought myself a monster. A broken doll. I honestly think Luffy just deciding that Chopper belonged with him started my healing journey. I wish Chopper could get more story, but he is also in the best place he could be. With his family.

Franky and Saul’s words to Robin have stuck in my head since I heard them. “Existing isn’t a crime!” And of course “No one is put on this world to be alone!” As someone who struggles with depression and only really has friends online; those words are staying in my heart. Also Ace’s “Thank you for loving me.” And a SPOILER below. Everything with Kuma, Bonney and Vegapunk. I adore that Oda didn’t make Vegapunk a stereotypical mad scientist. He still has humanity and values said traits. Vegapunk doing his damnedest to respect Kuma even though he had to turn Kuma into an ever obedient cyborg. And in the end being shown to give the highest command to Kuma’s beloved daughter because he couldn’t sleep knowing that there was a possibility that any Pacifista could kill Bonney; the one Kuma sacrificed everything for. Even if it ends up costing Vegapunk his life.

Something that fits into this theme entirely and that you've already talked about before in your other videos is Corazón himself. He went through the same terrible hardships as Doffy and yet took an entirely different path. It could be argued to some degree that they were always different, but we were never shown that Cora was always a good person, and I think that's intentional on Oda's part. The absolute defining point that we do get to see and don't have to speculate on is Sengoku vs Trebol, as the catalyst in the two kids' stories post-trauma was the person who took them in the direction they each went through. Corazón learned to cope with his past and work towards making the world around him a better place in his own way, while Doflamingo wanted to destroy what made him suffer in the first place. It's shocking how their constructions are a perfect reflection not so much of black-and-white, or good-and-evil philosophies, but rather of how a person can grow from their trauma and become better, or let resentment shape their actions into something twisted and harmful. It's not simply "good and bad", but rather what you should and shouldn't do with yourself as a person when life puts you through the wringer. And it's what ended up showing us, as the audience, the two doors that little Law had in front of him through these two characters. God damn that flashback arc is awesome.

Sadly I have gone through that. With two people on the same topic. Both people I know asked this simple question. "Why don't you cry" or, "When you cry why don't you make a sound?" And I had to tell them the answer, which was, "Because I needed a good damn reason to cry. It's something my mom beat into me, and would call me ugly if I cried loudly for no good reason." Cause yeah. This was normal for me. And of course both of them where so shocked that I sad that they they had different reactions to the answer. one said, "How do you not know this is horrible!? Your mom traumatized you into believing crying was not okay! How do you not know you have toxic masculinity in you!?" and "...I am so sorry you went though that. And I am sorry to say this in such a serious topic, but I now hate your mom and always will." The person who said the first one I do not talk to anymore since the more i told them about my past the more they used that as a reason to shame me for my gender. Long story short I am a Transman, and they where a transman themselves, and kept shaming me for not being man enough or being too much of a man with being a certain way with my transness and not being able to transition. YES really. As well as always saying they had it worse with anything when a friend needed help or was going through some tough things in life. I still am shocked a friend had to say this "Sorry. You had it much worse of course! But what I am going through right now is a lot." out of a reflect since yeah. They always followed it up with, "Well this happened to me so it's not that bad how you went through it." I can not believe I dated this guy! All because they used correct pronouns with me. And the second person has been trying to help me grow and be a better person and get out of my abusers house. But they also come with a double edge sword for reasons I can not say. But I will admit with out them I wouldn't have grown with out them and might have just been a husk of a person with out them. Really glad they are still in my life.

I know this isn't the point, but capitalizing the 't' in Transman made it feel like some cool elite secret spy group in my brain like "Kingsman". Which sure, it might as well be. I'm Nonbinary and thought I couldn't transition or have any kind of surgery growing up. I got top surgery at 30, and it was the best. When you're trans you're a self made man, which means you get to be any kind of man you want!

I'm glad you brought up Usopp and Sanji, I always found their dynamic underrated. I got into the series early on, or at least as "early's as you as you can when Thriller Bark was still being released. But that scene in Enie's Lobby of Sanji proudly stating that Usopp/Sogeking is their sniper was something I remember seeing people talk about after the fact, as well as his defense during the argument. I always liked that while Sanji was cold towards the guys in his crew and really only started opening up to Luffy and Nami, he slowly demonstrates an ability to open up to the other guys and show praise or dependence on them in his own special way. If I had to say a character who's trauma I really feel for, it's Katakuri's. There's something about being the older, mature, figure for those around you, having to be someone others can look up to and being expected to live up to those expectations and then some, all the while pushing your own feelings down, that really resonated with me. That chapter where he steps over the scarf and chooses to fight as himself was something that happened during a time I was going through a lot and just hit me hard.

One moment that stuck with me has been Usopp’s apology at the end of water seven. He was a shitty person throughout the arc not because he was necessarily an asshole, but because he was so lost in his own self-esteem issues that he dragged down and hurt others close to him. I used to be that person; who was shitty and would get away with it because i had my moments of low self estee, high self hate, and severe anxiety/depression. Id hurt people close to me and let my negative feelings get the best of me. Seeing Usopp finally just owning up to the fact that he was a terrible person and that he truly doesn’t want to lose the family he’s become a part of made me seriously reflect on all the damage Ive done to my own friends and family. Ever since then, Ive had more love and compassion for myself and Ive been striving to be a better person both for myself and for those around me. It just took having to make my own tearful apologies to some friends I nearly lost.

So much! of the one piece discussion online is focused on "where's the story going" picking each new chapter apart piece by piece and hardly anyone glances back at where we've been holistically, unless it's for conspiracy lore purposes. This is really oversimplifying how damaging trauma can be but the juxtaposition of the villains and strawhats reminds me of the yugioh card meme in how a traumatic experience can shape someone's mental health/brain chemistry and their emotional well being/ interpersonal interactions with others. The villains often times take the right most path because they did not have love and support and our protagonists are able to avoid that path because they were "rescued" in a way. Even if someone does have kindness and empathy, the damage can be so deep that it affects people on a cellular level and we see that with Sanji during Whole Cake. I love your videos because as much as I love the action, lore, and world building that One Piece has to offer, breaking down the nuances of character's makes me appreciate Oda's writing beyond the superficial aspects that I already love about the manga. In other words, I am feeling more expanded 🤯

This is why I hate when people say “rank who you think had the worst trauma in the Straw Hats from least to most” because all of them had been hurt through their trauma in one way or another and it still shaped them. Usopp grew up without his father and watched his mother succumb to illness, Sanji was abused and then almost starved to death on a rock after escaping the abuse, Nami saw her mother being murdered and then was forced into slavery and abuse, Chopper was socially isolated and abused and then lost the closest he ever had to a father, etc. It’s all traumatic and scarred their hearts and shaped them as people. Trauma is trauma. Hurt is hurt. It’s not a competition. You don’t have to have fought in a war to have PTSD.

Well said. Oda is so so good at constructing characters that make internal sense and feel like they grew naturally out of their circumstances. I also really like how the arcs the characters have surrounding their trauma are never that they need to "get over" what happened or "fix" the damage it caused them. Their trauma shapes them, but the way it changes them is just part of who they are, and the story never suggests that that part of them deserves love any less than the rest of themselves. In One Piece the characters don't need to undo the broken parts of themselves, they just become happy and live and love despite it.

I always enjoy watching your One Piece videos, they are excellent at providing a new or deeper perspective on characters, moments, and themes, however I would like to disagree with you on something. I do not believe that Usopp is a coward. I see so much hate against him in the community (I didn't feel any from you either in this video or in his dedicated video, but I see it a lot in the comments on Crunchyroll and in other creators content) he gets looked down on for being weak, selfish, and cowardly, but I feel like if you look at everything that he does it shows pretty clearly that none of those things are true. He is weaker than most of the crew, especially compared to Luffy, Sanji, and Zoro, but they aren't called the monster trio because they're average. And he is afraid of almost everything, but the world of One Piece would be terrifying to live in, and they consistently go to the most dangerous places in it. Usopp has always been brave, one of the first things we see him do is stand up to the Buggy Pirates, a crew who he knows are extremely dangerous, and he does so by standing in the open, not hiding behind cover. And then he selflessly destroys his reputation with the Usopp Pirates to keep them safe. And he and Nami managed to hold of Kuro's crew long enough for Luffy and Zoro to got there. And that's all before he joins the crew and goes to sea. I see no weakness there, no selfishness, and no cowardice. I would even go as far as to say that he is the only Strawhat who has already achieved their dream, he is already a brave warrior of the sea, he just doubts his abilities and worth to the crew, and both of those things cripple him, along with what he is best at being a skill that doesn't have many opportunities to be used, unlike swordsmanship or kicking or stretching, sniping can only be effective in certain scenarios. Sorry for the long rant, but I will die on this hill

Usop is my favourite character in op so far, something about him resonates with me so much. I think my own life parallels his to a degree. Sometimes someone doesn't have to experience super tragic trauma to become damaged. I spent so much of my childhood denying I had any right to feel depressed because I "didn't have it as bad as other people". But I have since learned to process my trauma, met many people who were finally able to see me and help me, it's a long process but my life keeps improving every single year.
