I recently noticed that Kaido and Big Mom have opposite backstories: Kaido was forced to grow up early (having to find his way around a war-torn country without a mentor when he was only ten), Big Mom never got to grow up at all (being groomed by her mentor to become a living weapon and holding on to values she doesn't understand as a result).
@mousecar236 ай бұрын
Due to a complete coincidence, I realize that Kaido is what happens to Kyros if King Riku had never reached out his hand. Kyros was a violent and aggressive youth who would have gone on to a kill or be killed lifestyle. Riku saw the raw potential in the young man and offered guidance, a way to fix his reputation, a place to live while he did it, and a profession he could be proud of. Kaido? Kaido was shoved away, offered to the military who also treated him poorly. Two men of similar circumstance with drastically different outcomes because one was fortunate enough to get a mentor who cared enough to push them on a better path.
@Moe_Posting_Chad5 ай бұрын
Let's not forget... Kiado is not a victim of pure circumstance, at some point along the way he chose to be an active participant, and he was probably thrilled by the violence he inflicted. He may have regrets about how he killed Oden. But that isn't enough to redeem him. He chose to kill every time. *He chose to kill.*
@mousecar235 ай бұрын
@@Moe_Posting_Chad Kaido believes that only the strong are worthy, and he only knows strength of body as a measure. Kyros also only knew strength of body until Riku showed him alternate strengths. Kyros *also chose to kill*. He wanted revenge for his friend. I honestly think Katakuri's fight was made to be sorta a kaido light for the reader to help get what ultimately beats kaido. I don't think luffy wins from the punch, I think luffy's unwavering resolve and simple answer to kaido questioning how could he possibly change the world broke him. He is fighting someone who has been through hell and back and is strong enough to stand on equal ground to him and when asked what can that person do all luffy says is he will make a world where his friends can eat. It's a simple answer but it's such a strong one. It isn't grandiose, it isn't ambitious, but it means the world for who luffy helps. I think Kaido realizes luffy is joyboy at that moment.
@wwe121536 ай бұрын
@@Umezete this sums it up. A simple answer but probably the most powerful line that kaido ever heard. Kaido actually never asked for it before. In his whole life. One of the things I really like about how Oda handles villains with tragic pasts is that for every monster who comes out of monstrous circumstances, there's usually another character who came from similar or even the same origins, but who made different choices. Doflamingo and Corazon might be the most direct example, but there's also Arlong/Hordy Vs. Jinbei and Fisher Tiger. I think Whitebeard and Big Mom are another good example. Both were incredibly strong from birth, and both wanted a family and so sought one out on the seas. But, Whitebeard cares deeply about every single one of his sons as in individual, whereas Big Mom only cares about how they fit into her idea of a perfect family. This is really shown in how Whitebeard's family are all people not related to him who he took in because they needed him, and he took them as they are. Meanwhile Big Mom is always seeking out men with which to breed a specific child, and then getting mad when her children don't turn out the way she imagined they would, which is deeply gross. In Kaido's case his mirror is probably Yamato as much as Luffy. Kaido deliberately recreated the kind of environment where he grew up for Yamato, making him fight to survive and only acknowledging him when he showed strength. But, rather than do as Kaido had done and see the power to subjugate others as the only thing in the world that mattered, Yamato looked to Oden and the samurai as examples of how strength could be used for more than that, and came to oppose everything Kaido stood for.
@ProjektTaku2 ай бұрын
Ngl, this is kind of one of my problems with the Vinsmokes. Don't get me wrong, I love all of them, Yonji is my goat, but they never give the brothers proper parallel's that make different choices, because they are clearly stated to be born without compassion, unlike Sanji. Even Reiju, who had the same enhancements, was stated to retain her emotions because she wasn't born modified, essentially meaning we'll never know if the brothers could've been good.

I think the Wano Kuni arc itself is Oda’s criticism of Japan during and after the Meiji Restoration. For those who don’t know, the Meiji Restoration was this movement that established a Japanese Empire in response to foreign influences of trade and control. To reassert itself against Western powers, Japan underwent massive change: industrialization, war, and political upheaval until it rose from the ashes as this country looking to other countries at the time for plunder during the late 19th and early 20th centuries . The massive industrialization scarred the Japanese environmentally and socially: it was a shock doctrine to the previous feudal society. The Meiji Restoration also modernized the Japanese military, thus becoming capable of defeating Tsarist Russian forces in 1905. If you are still reading this, what I am saying is that the Wano arc mirrors a more satirized depiction of the Meiji Restoration and the inherently fascist ideology that Kaidou and thus the Meiji Emperor shared. Thus, it makes sense why Kaidou is this foreign entity from the Vodka Kingdom (Europe-ish), considering that the Meiji modeled its infrastructure and key institutions in the German/Russian/British manner of doing things. Also, although Kaidou is from the Vodka kingdom, he has a name that is written in Kanji rather than in in katakana (usually used for loan words), implying that it’s a monster fostering within the Japanese confines of societal formation. TL;DR Kaidou represents Japanese imperial fascism through the Meiji Restoration that took place from the early 19th century to 1945.

I just checked. Kaido only gets that super early, now extremely inaccurate dark-shadow close up when Garp talks about them in Chapter 432. He and Big Mom are not name-dropped yet. I do believe the first time his name is used is in Thriller Bark far ahead of when it starts getting directly relevant. It's likely that Melon knows this and just used imprecise phrasing because the meeting between Law and Luffy is when talk of Kaido is truly significant for the first time.

One point I would find to be quite interesting is that perhaps Kaido did have someone or a few someone reach out to him.. It just so happen that they were the entirely wrong type of people to help a war-scarred teen weapon like him. The Rocks Pirate, Rocks D. Xebec, and of course, Charlotte Linlin. They found him, and they thought of him as just another powerful weapon to add into a crew of already powerful and conflicting people. Instead of a crew that respected him for being himself, he found a crew of people glued together only by the fact that they were monsters amongst other monsters. I wonder, maybe, if somehow things were just a bit better. If the Rocks Pirate weren't united only by Rocks and their own strength, if they had just a bit more, Kaido would've become someone better.

His backstory also doesn't try to make his actions rational which a lot of bad guy flashbacks do in many cases which is a plus in my book. Thank you so much for putting this so much better than I could have. Kaido has more depth than people give him credit for, and I love the observation that Kaido IS standing up against an unjust system, but doesn't realize the one he's replacing it with is just as unjust. Then there's Big Mom, who I think also has more going on than people give her credit for. I honestly think the whole episode between Big Mom, Zeus, and Nami is far more meaningful than people realize. Zeus is made from a part of Big Mom's own soul, and I think that part is her own childlike innocence. When she finally decided to be cruel and unkind to even Tama, who she was kind to in her amnesiac childlike state, she was ALSO casting away Zeus and replacing him with Hera. When he fled and joined Nami, who despite everything still accepted Zeus (under protest), well it's in Nami's nature to be kind to even bad children, and Big Mom cast out the last of her childlike innocense to become an entirely cruel monster in every aspect.

Between this and Alecxsandr’s video, i have found a newfound appreciation for Kaido. Even after Wano ended, i always viewed Kaido as a “meathead that always talks about how the strong live, the weak die.” But after rereading some parts of Wano, and watching both videos, Kaido is so much more than that. He is a flawed character like everyone else but he has a respect for the strong, he knows he is strong that he’s so damn bored that no one can defeat or - at the very least - harm him. Until Luffy came. He showed a variety of emotions because he had fun and was freed from his boredom. Yeah he’s the strongest creature alive, and is one of the most powerful beings in the pirate world, but in the end, he’s just a guy that has fun. Like Luffy said “when i have fun, that’s when i feel the most free.”

I love This Video!!💕✨, Kaido tells us who he is through his relationship with Yamato, when they clash thunder Bagua’s, He says “ Life isn’t a series of answers and questions”, a lot of One piece viewers can relate to they’re dysfunctional relationship, as most of us who have had an altercation with our parents, because of a difference of polite/belief, we can clearly see that even though Kaido stands on his beliefs, he is also very unhappy with the state of the world. 🌎

You've nailed what I have thought about Kaido for a while. Creating Joyboy again is like a perfect stew, and Kaido had the strength but not the heart. He had no one around him to truly be his friend.
@willdaniel51246 ай бұрын
23:22 The way you phrased how Kaido hates how 'weak' Oden for caring is so good, and I missed that little bit even if I understood everything else until now. Because before I also said "wow he could've given him a second chance since he was so heartbroke at the foul play", BUT THAT'S IT! Kaido's nature as the strongest lies in not letting anything be a weakness, including emotionally, and that scene finally made sense to me. I'll still watch 'till the end, but thank you for that!

One of my favorite things to speculate about Kaido is how he serves as a potential foil to Shanks. You see, I have a theory that the original Yonko are set up as dramatic foils. Just look at Whitebeard and Big Mom, their dreams of building a family, and the absolute polar opposite ways they go about achieving that (biological vs. adoptive, force vs. choice, hierarchical vs. fraternal, etc.). It’s just one example of this foiled setup, but I think it makes my point To that end, looking at how Kaido could foil with Shanks gives us a lot to chew on. Their values around strength and weakness (especially with the latest details about Shanks’ fleet), their backstories (Kaido as a political bargaining chip and the sketchy details about Shanks and the chests at God Valley), their connections to Joy Boy and Nika, and even their portrayals in relation to motifs like alcohol - it strikes me as fascinating to try and theorize more info about Shanks based on what we’ve learned about Kaido this far No idea if you/anyone will even read all this but regardless, thanks for the video, I always love listening to your commentary and thoughtful analysis of one of the greatest tales ever told

@@elliswebster7041 since the Yonko were in his head from day one as end game characters, I wouldn’t be surprised if at least some of the larger details were planned in so much as how these characters would compare & contrast even if the finer points changed drastically over time! Man i hope for a garp analysis morj has a great one but one more doesn't hurt Patch notes for garp He acknowledges flaws of marines and wg but is the symbol of hope as hero of marines for the people overall , knows why marines are important Believes in fostering the future gen and bets on it ,koby helmeppo etc (read egghead for rest of his pupils) Admits dismay at sons, grandsons who are pirates , lost thier hope and left the Marines but still is proud of them Loves his family the most , wanted to keep ace/luffy by his side and protect /nurture them to bring righteousness, still choose to be punched and let luffy go Loves freedom choose to do his thing but chose the side in which he could capture evil pirates and save people He is simple on the surface but when you peel the layers he's definitely the most misunderstood/wrongly disliked character by the fandom

There's quite a few similarities in the fights that Luffy has with Katakuri and Kaido. Both recognise Luffy's strength after he's powered up despite initially dismising him and basically punting him into the ground, then they realise "This guy won't stay down" when Luffy hits back. Both are irritated when their fights are interrupted and both of them even have something of a silly side, Katakuri with his snacktime, Kaido with his drunken tears.

I like to think of Kaido as a version of Guts from Berserk. A kid born into war, where getting stronger was his only way to survive, and to whom life makes no sense without war. Kaido took a darker path and he couldn't find any other purpose in life. He wants a big war because that'd make him feel at home.

Enel being as one dimensional as he is hits harder when you consider that European people ate all the mummies and Isn'treally people have dehumanizing TikTok trends. Colonizing makes you a one note person, which is why Luffy rejects it every time it's presented as an option.
