Their hometown was minuscule and they were on a hot hot winning streak at the time of the accident, a complete tragedy. Brazilian here 👋 most of the chapecoense football team and staff didn't survive and the survivors/their rescue stories is very shocking so it turned out a very big case here.. the captain was one of the owners of the company so the first office just went along with it and he didn't declare emergency because he knew if authorities discovered he willingly didn't get enough fuel the consequences would be big so somehow he thought it would be okay to risk all these lives (guess he was certain he could get away with it) it's a very sad and angering case that Brasil will never forget

I have worked in the air charter industry for many years. To me, none of this behavior was shocking. This mentality is omnipresent in the world of air charter - executive, passenger and to higher extend in cargo. The smaller the fleet, the more "hands-on" management types are working the cockpits or dispatch. If you can avoid any monetary costs you will do that - you sold the flight for a fixed rate, often in a fierce competition, and have next to zero chances to recover anymore funds from clients once the flight is done. This is a very global problem and in no way limited to any region.
@molly95822 жыл бұрын
Yes, before I read about it I just assumed airlines weren’t working on a very thin profit margin. Not a defense for all their many failings, but I just didn’t know the expenses, problems that can arise with scheduling, etc. All cost-cutting measures and bad workplace practices flow from there.
@johnrroberts79002 жыл бұрын
A company must get out of the industry if it has to operate like this. Competition is obviously not always healthy. I don't like monopolies either, but the blood shed by the dead and living must ensure safety trumps at all costs. If it is a non-profitable route for which the government feels there is a need, tender out to have one carrier fly it with the government subsidising fuel costs through tax reduction, etc where necessary.

One of the pilots almost certainly manually disabled the CVR. I don’t think anyone would argue against this if they’re being objective.
@molly95822 жыл бұрын
Indeed. The only other examples of anyone in the cockpit deliberately doing this that I can think of are suicide/mass murders by pilots/hijackers like Tsu Way Ming of SilkAir 185 or Auburn Calloway of FedEx 705. The captain of this LaMia flight wasn’t murderous, but it tells you he was about just as ethical.
@martinkirugi2542 жыл бұрын
The pilot was also one of its owners thus the copilot had a fear to correct his boss. Then they were given a more direct route in-flight and the captain saw no need for landing to refuel. They accepted to hold for long before landing probably for fear of questioning and eventually used up the fuel they were short of. It was a sad tragedy for the football family.

I'm always a bit amazed when hearing about pilots who gets sucked into a dangerous behaviour by their company, and management. The reason why the pilots did not declare a low fuel emergency, was because that doing so would have exposed the pilot & his company's shady, and possibly illegal practices. The exposure would have been the "final nail in the coffin" for the company, and for the pilot's career. It would have been FAR BETTER for that company and the career of its pilots to have died first -- at least these people's lives would have been spared. Instead, they were killed as a direct result of the criminal actions of the struggling company. Hopefully, the company's executives were sentenced and thrown in a federal penitentiary for their crimes. I know I'm making an extremely strong statement. To be clear, I'm not against companies trying to make a profit. But when a company has a blatant disregard for people's lives, that company must be shut down before lives are actually lost.

As for the CVR being disabled, I can reasonably say *maybe* but it depends how long they were gliding. The CVR and FDR have multiple sources of power. One is from the 110VAC 400Hz bus (there are probably at least two of these feeding the recorders, but don’t quote me), but the other is from the 28VDC bus, which is battery-derived, although the battery is mainly used for APU starting. In an emergency, it is guaranteed to provide enough power for emergency systems for a minimum of 20 minutes. Basic avionics, basic flight controls, emergency lighting in cockpit and cabin, and the recorders. I can’t imagine these planes having a ram air turbine, so once you lose all engines, you’re on battery. But the recorders can be powered from the battery, yes.

I remember when this crash happened. A few days after the crash, newspapers were hailing the captain as a hero for dropping fuel before trying to land. I was very sceptical about that story, because it made no sense to me, that the captain would want to drop fuel in an emergency, before landing at his target airport. Why would he do that? Weight wouldn't be an issue and in an emergency, you need to get to the ground asap. Unfortunately, that was at the beginning of my interest in plane crashes, so I didn't know enough to argue against what the newspapers said. (This plane can't even drop fuel in the first place, but I only learned that later unfortunately.) But when I heard later, that the captain fucked up, I was quite satisfied with knowing, that my instinct on the matter had been correct. Ironically, at the exact time, this happened, we had a class project, doing some short stop motion films. The one my group did was about a plane almost crashing and being saved by the pilot.

I was watching a video on the safety statistics of general aviation. I pointed out that the statistics don't really tell you much about your actual chances of making a safe flight. Statistics are good at telling us what to expect when randomness plays a large roll. But randomness doesn't play a large roll in general aviation. This branch of aviation is dominated largely by human factors. That is, the behavior of humans involved plays the largest part in the safety of any given flight. Statistics will tell you that there will be an accident for every X number of hours flown. But if you are a careful pilot, checking the weather and making sure you never get into weather that is too bad for your plane. You get and maintain your training and keep that training up to date, ensure your plane is properly maintained, and you establish good safe flying habits, and you never go unless you are sure you can make it you could go much much longer than X hours and never even have an accident. If on the other hand, you take chances. If you get and continue bad habits, if you sometimes fly when you have been drinking, or you ignore the weather, or you overestimate your abilities you could find yourself sitting in a smashed airplane on the side of some mountain with your membership card in the being alive club violently revoked much sooner than X hours. These pilots took off thinking they could make it, but they certainly weren't sure they could make it. They were depending on luck to get them there safely. But luck is a fickly bitch, who never lets you know ahead of time that she isn't going to be there for you this time. They bet their lives they would make it, along with the lives of 69 other people. I'm not sure, but I'm willing to bet those soccer players would not have agreed to bet their lives on the pilot getting lucky.

The thing that always confuses me in these stories of pilots intentionally pulling risky maneuvers... do these pilots not realize that they will be among the dead when things go wrong? I understand that they have the "it will never happen to me" or "that's only something that happens to other people" mentality, but in the grand scheme of things, how is it not worth it to spend just a little bit extra on fuel just to be safe? Another question that I've got, and this may now be something that is done, but why is fuel level not something considered when approving a flight for departure? If it's not something that is considered, it really should be. So many of these crashes that you've discussed could have been prevented just by having airport personnel verify adequate fuel before the tower clears them for take off.

"maximized profit over safety" That's how capitalism works, yeah.

Yeah, safety is so much better in socialist countries, like the USSR.

@@hrdley911 Look at any industry honestly and you'll see the same thing - the sacrifice of anything and anyone for the sake of stock prices. It's undeniable.

@@Robocopnik I agree. Greed is inherent in humans, and I'm fully OK with some government oversight, and civil accountability. Otherwise, our cars would kill us and planes would fall from the skies. I just get a little tired of the evil capitalism mantra. Corruption and incompetence are hallmarks of socialist and communist countries, so I wish someone could point to a better existing alternative. Sorry. Rant over.

If the company doesn't have enough money to run an airline route, it should not try to run an airline route.

I didn't catch it if it was mentioned but you didn't say whether the pilot and copilot died in the crash. If they did not they and the management of the company should be in prison!

This was such a thriller that I wish the ending wasn't described in the title. Otherwise it's a pretty good and descriptive title though.

If the plane had a FDR, would that not show the reason for the CVR to have stopped working?

How the fuck is this not a mayday or pan pan call? Like, they should have given a pan pan to say "hey, we're not going to fall out of the sky just yet, but we're really low on fuel..."

Damn. All it needed was a mayday call before they were put in the hold.
