How Operation Metal, Shop & Wood Rose contributed to Op Blue Star ? Why infantry charge failed ?

Ritesh Lakhi informs in this video about the various facets of Operation Blue Star, the code named operation of Indian security forces to flush out militants out of Darbar Sahib Complex popularly known as the Golden Temple Complex in 1984. The Operation Blue star was sub divided into three different operations code named further as Operation Metal, Operation Shop and Operation Wood Rose which had clearly defined objectives in terms of army objectives to flush out and neutralize ultras in various Gurudwaras of the Indian state of Punjab. The most important of these operations was Operation Metal which concentrated on flushing and fighting ultras and Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale along with his supporters who had held Akal Takht for considerable number of months ahead of the operation. Ritesh Lakhi explores the reasons why infantry action was necessitated but failed to deliver the required results leading to the requisitioning of artillery and other guns to be deployed for flushing out ultras holed up inside the Akal Takht building.

You are wrong about command and control structure and resposibilities of Generals. Gen Vaidya was Army Chief. Lt Gen Sundarji was Western Army Commander GOC in C Western Command Chandimandir. Western Command had 11 Corps and 2 Corps under its command at that time. 11 Corps is based in Jalandhar and is responsible for defence of Western Theatre stretching from Jammu till Rajasthan at that time. 2 Corps is a Strike formation for offensive operations. Now at that time 11 Corps had its hands full as both its divisions 7 Infantry Div at Ferozepur and 15 Infantry Div at Amristar were made ready for defensive operations against Pakistan. Op Woodrose was actually undertaken by 15 Inf Div. So 11 Corps was not directly involved in the operation. 2 Corps being an attack formation is a key element and cannot be used for other tasks especially in case of threat of direct war with Pakistan. So 2 Corps also wasnt touched. Effectively Western Army Commander had no troops under him to conduct operation. So Army HQ reserve formation at that time 9 Inf Div based in Meerut was tasked for this. 9 Div was placed under command HQ Western Command. Now Lt Gen Ranjit Singh Dayal was Chief of Staff Western Command that is second im command of the Army Commander Lt Gen Soundrji. Lt Gen Dayal did not command any troops as he was not any corps commander but since 9 Div was an outsode formation attached directly under HQ Western Command he became immediate superior above Hq 9 Div for this operation. Maj Gen Kuldip Singh Brar was the GOC of 9 Div who was the tactical commander of this operation. You wrongly mention him as operational commander. In the army, all commanders from a Platoon till a Division are tactical commanders. All Corps Commanders are operational commanders. All Army Commanders Chief and beyond are in strategic domain. I hope this makes it clear. Also the formations I mention above are of 1984. Present setup jas undergone many changes incliding formations and role and are not to be discussed in open forums. You also wrongly mention Companies as units. Infantry units are called Batallions. The strength of a Batallion authorised in 84 was about 600 Troops. 10 Guards is an Infantry Batallion not a company. An Infantry Batallion is made up of 4 rifle comapnies usually named A B C D. Each company had about 100-120 authorised strength in 84. I mentiom authorised strength here because actual strength posed is usually upto 80% during peace time for economic reasons. And the real strength present is not even half of the posted strength as troops are involved in other tasks, duties, training, courses, attachments, sick, leave etc. Effectively each Batallion could not have mustered more than 350-380 troops implying 60-70 on average per company. A Batallion is commanded by Commamding Officer CO of the rank of Colonel (on 84 COs were Lt Cols). A company os commanded by a Lt Col or Maj.
