Eight-year-old Emily was born prematurely and was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy. After struggling to walk as a toddler and consulting a paediatrician, it was unclear whether Emily was ever going to be able to walk unaided.
Cerebral palsy is an umbrella term to includes a whole range of severities and is individual in each child. Symptoms can include difficulties with walking, talking, eating or playing. More specifically; muscle tightness, involuntary movement of muscles, difficulties with walking and mobility, abnormal sensations.
Emily’s muscle spasticity and weakness meant orthotic splints in the form of ankle-foot-orthoses (AFOs) were a good option. After coming to see us, the family learnt that not only would orthotics help Emily to walk day-to day but would also teach her to walk in the right way, with a more normalised gait.
