Looks can be very deceiving, and unfortunately that is what we found with our steel sailboat. Two years after hauling out for what we thought would be some fairly quick repairs, we are still chasing rust.

Man it seems every time youn look like you are getting ahead, you find other issues that have not been properly maintained before you bought the boat. So glad that the both of you are pretty competent boat builders and are able to repair the problems although they are a pain in the neck and I would have to pay someone to make them as I do not have the abilities and fortitude that the both of you have.❤

We are very lucky we have the skills and the will. I def would not recommend a steel boat to anyone without either the skills/ time or money needed to do steel boat repairs!

Gotta love when the people there before you half assed a repair job and left you with a worse situation than if they'd done nothing at all. I certainly am not speaking from experience, not even a little bit. :p Hope you guys have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year, and that everything goes smoothly for you at least with the holidays.

Just found your channel, great work!! I got a steel boat too i'm restoring, needle guns and hard to reach places. I hate sprayfoam, for the reasons in your vid, took me months to get it out my boat. Looked like you did a better job than the previous owners, best of luck.

Big job hopefully you got the boat for a decent price? I would have to assume that the previouse owner knew how bad it was! A good trick to chipping rust in hard to reach places is to use your multitool turned on its side like a mini electric chipping hammer. I actually find it better than the needle gun for digging right down into the pits to expose clean steel.

Merry Christmas. Your videos scare me sometimes as I have an old steel yacht that looks very similar to yours that I am trying to get back into the water. I have a lot of rust to take care of. Maybe not as much as yours but it is a lot. Good luck you seem to be moving in the right direction.

6:47 I’m so turned off from buying a used steel boat.. i know that’s not rational as glass boats can have many issues as well.. One thing I wouldn’t do is add foam that absorbs moisture..
@WaywardLifeSailing

What if the mouse thought it was your room-mate? Seriously, I keep watching and thinking someone owning that boat really did not understand steel boat and how to live with them. I do understand and command you for all the work but for me at 60+ year old, we just fix issues as they come along and a bit of forward looking repairs. Our thinking is, you will never get the boat to 100% and if you do, by the time you get there the first part will need to be addressed again. Granted, we do not have a boat with the "conceptual" issues you have and that is something to think about. No one installed "tiles" to seal humidity under the sole, etc. Air circulation is numero uno in a steel boat a bit like a wooden boat. One really has to "think" how a steel boat "lives" and behaves before installing "stuff" that invites water ingress, humidity and unwanted "roommates". Keep up the good work and get her back in the water!
@WaywardLifeSailing
@WaywardLifeSailing 7 ай бұрын
Haha poor mouse had a rude eviction if he was thinking that. Poor guy. The people who built her were def not thinking about how things should go into a steel boat, you’re right. Once we get the potentially catastrophic work out of the way and can live onboard again we won’t be so picky about getting back to the water, but we really wanna make sure we’ve caught all the holes!

I'm sure it seems like one setback after another, but it will pay dividends in peace of mind while underway, or worse a failure in some god forsaken situation/place. Better now while you can address the issues properly. Sailing (boat repair) is not for the faint of heart.

I can't watch any more. It is too depressing. A shit steel boat, worth very little even if it was beautiful and it will take you 4 years to fix and will still be a shit boat at the end of it worth nothing. Ditch it, go find a plastic boat and enjoy sailing around the world. Trust me I am doing the same with a wooden boat and am in for £100k plus and am not on KZbin to share the disaster or the revenue. My project which I thought would take me a year is in 18 months and I have a team of 2 shipwrights working full time on the critical stuff and I am doing the interior. I have at least another year to go. It will be beautiful when finished, but still worth 50% of what I spent on it.

Welp, I hope you’re wrong about both of us and we all have beautiful boats in the next year! Especially because scrapping ours at this point and buying a new one just isn’t an option 😅 that being said I wouldn’t be watching anyone else going through this either so I can understand not wanting to watch. Hopefully by the summer we have some on the water content to share! And I’m glad you enjoyed the music 😌
