The Irish Homestead

Күн бұрын

Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict stone cottage in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing the work ourselves.
Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get!
This week, we get the concrete pour done!

What a beautiful floor. Stuffed up goes like this...... When I was about 14 years old, the man I worked for evenings and weekends built an extension across the back of his semi in Hazel Grove. We laid the concrete together. We had a pile of sand, aggregate, bags of cement, and a mixer. We started early and finished late. At the end we proudly reviewed our work. Looking into the distance I asked "What's that roll of plastic in the far corner for?" £#uc& was the reply, that's the DPM! We did not dig up the perimeter and stick a 6" strip of plastic around the concrete to poke up around the edges for the building inspector, just in case you are wondering 😊😊😊😊😊. I'm 63 now, his wife is 90, the floor is still good😂😂😂😂. Regards, Stephen.

While I love projects like this I know that the preservation work being done is much more difficult than if the whole house had been removed and they started from scratch. Remember this folks watching on the hardest things you can do is to build onto an old structure, you will spend more time effort and money doing that than you will on an entirely new build, but ultimately this is what we should do rather than toss everything in the trash.

This brought back memories of 1992, when we got our first load of concrete. There was a mix up and it came on a conveyor lorry, rather than the pump we’d asked for. The driver was a saint and he reversed the lorry 3/4 of a mile, turned around and reversed back, just to take the width of the lorry off our barrow run. We were putting a sub floor in under our sitting room, in a futile attempt to keep vermin out. After a bit of figuring out, we had a system. Our neighbour and I would fill the barrow, walk it inside, tip it at the sitting room door and my better half would shovel it from there. She got so hot she stripped to the waist, just like us. Gave the neighbour a fright, which changed our system again. He filled the barrow, I walked and emptied and she spread. We got it done before it set, three of us flat out with two barrows. Often wondered what he said when he got home. We remained best friends, his family and ours, so it’s possible he didn’t say anything about it. Your system was a bit better, with enough people and barrows to move it efficiently, but I still would have liked to contribute. I bet there were sore hands and stiff backs the next day.

The house looks so radically different with the openness and the floors now in place. Yes, taken the industry a while to appreciate the role of the fibers in the concrete mix but the benefits are so positive both in the short term and the long term. The steel around the chimney is just to absorb the risk of severe storm conditions causing deflection of the ridge beam that would be transmitted into the chimney structure.

I think you were fortunate that the front porch & chimney were in poor structural states & thus needed to be removed. An orangery will be a great additional to the footprint of the property. Good forward thinking, regarding soil pipes for the possible future addition of one or two en suites to Euan & Isabella's bedrooms upstairs. I look forward every week for your two videos. And it will be great to have edited footage of the renovation from start to finish, that you can watch back in the future. All the best. x
