After almost two and a half years of rebuilding our sailboat, we are on to putting together cabinets- or rather, I, Taryn, am. And quite honestly, I have no idea how to properly do woodwork or how to get these things back together, but I'm giving it my best shot...

Hi, George from SV Poldi here. Good to see you back. Don't worry about some shallow air packets behind the boards. Air up to 1.5" works as a pretty good isolant if trapped in a cavity. You've already eliminated the problem of exposed cold metal/condensation/rust spots with the foam. If you feel like you still need fill some areas, install the board first but leave couple fasteners out so you can pull the wood away just enough to get the foam spray tube (use medium expanding one) in the crack to spray in whatewer needed. Instantly screw everything back in place and let the foam behind the board fully expand /fill the cavity and dry out. You may get some foam overflow but it is always easy to cut later off when is dry. Happy Easter.

Hmmm yes good advice! We already bought the foam kit so we will probably end up just spraying in more like we have done before, but your way def sounds more sensible haha

The boat has had so much structural work that everything must have shifted in small ways. All of the wood panels probably wouldn’t fit exactly like they did originally. Having to make cuts to fit pieces back in makes complete sense. Good on you for tackling all the puzzle pieces.

I had my boat fully spray foamed and the only places I have found any condensation was any where there was bare metal but besides that my winter heating cost was less than half than the years before I had the foam put in. Buy the way!! You guys are doing an awesome job and I still have a nice bottle of Jamison just waiting to meet you guys in some anchorages here on the West coast!!! Maybe as far as BAHA ?? Work the cabinets like you did the boat: Not as one huge job, but a bunch of normal sized ones that when put together give you a cabin. Looking at the whole sometimes is very debilitating. Celebrate the successes as you are so good at doing.

This is def good advice! And how I initially decided to tackle things… but now there’s the issue of things being mislabeled, and that’s making it harder to stick to the one cabinet at a time plan

Have you sorted out that jigsaw puzzle yet? If you are having difficulties making the parts fit, I’m not surprised. It does not mean that you are an idiot, but by the time you’re finished, I’m not so certain. You’ll be a certified boat interior fitter; you’ll definitely be certified!! I wouldn’t be concerned about the cavities, as air is a good thermal insulator.

You're not doing badly at all, even more notably because it's something you're not experienced with. First off, wood is in general a pain in the butt especially dealing with custom cuts and shapes, but even ignoring that, wood is also very sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. It warps and moves on its own, particularly in an environment like you live in up in the rainforests of the Pacific northwest. Those pieces were one shape and size when you took them out on as warm summer day, they're a completely different dimensional shape now in the cold damp of winter. On top of that the boat is steel and you've welded on it, it's no longer precisely the same dimensional shape it was when the trim pieces were removed. All of that was just to say that none of that woodwork was going to go back in exactly it came out without trimming and reshaping, possibly remaking some of it completely. You did just fine without having to completely recut all the panels from fresh lumber. Also, a decent bit (possibly all) of what you showed is back in cabinets and lockers where no one is going to see it anyhow, so it doesn't need to be pretty.
