How Padme Transcended Death: The Most Important Character in the Star Wars Saga Explained

In recent years, Star Wars fans have come to better appreciate many of the main characters of the Prequel Trilogy. The Prequels’ depictions of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Supreme Chancellor Palpatine in particular have seen a lot of retrospective praise, especially in light of how Star Wars: The Clone Wars recontextualized their characters. But one of the Prequels’ main characters hasn’t gotten nearly as much love as the others - Padmé Amidala. In the final cut of the Prequel films, Padmé isn’t nearly as noticeable a character as the likes of Anakin or Obi-Wan, and though Star Wars: The Clone Wars did her character justice, she’s still overshadowed by the era’s flashier heroes. But Padmé is a much deeper and more significant character than many fans lend credence to. She’s not only ideologically compelling, a much-needed counterweight to the egomania of Palpatine, but also arguably the greatest hero in the Star Wars saga, and in this video we’ll be explaining why.

I think she may have had the Force, although minutely. If she had truly been Force strong, she would have been a Jedi who could be Queen of Naboo and later a Senator. It also would have made her relationship with Anakin that more powerful and forbidden.🤔

It’s really a pity that she didn’t have the Force at least in any way we know of. Had she been gifted with the Force she undoubtedly would have been incredibly strong with the Light Side. Her ideals and beliefs in helping others align perfectly with the Light. She could have even been just as powerful as Master Yoda with a connection to the Light side. Because just like Yoda she doesn’t seek greater power she only wishes to help other and the Force would undoubtedly respond to that and gift her will all the power she could ever need to help others. It would be really interesting to see just how powerful of a Jedi she could be if gifted with the Force.

The name Padme seems to be derived from the Sanskrit name Padma, which means lotus. The lotus is a symbol of purity and regeneration. Palpatine's first name is Sheev, taken from Shiva, the God of destruction. Lucas even named them as opposites, the light and dark sides of Anakins psyche.

2:02 let me stop you right there: Padmé is very involved from the beginning of the film; she’s just ‘young and naive’ as Sidious said and is a clear pacifist. When her communications were cut she refused to mobilize more than her security forces to avoid a war, but an invasion was put on her/her people whether she wanted war or not. To call her a chess piece not used until the end is a disservice to her character. She also surprised Palpatine by returning to Naboo, created an alliance with the Gungans (after noting what Jar Jar said on Coruscant), was a capable warrior in her own right, trusted Qui Gon even against her better judgement, and utilized her decoys efficiently. She was the opposite of Palpatine: someone genuinely trying to better as many people as possible with no selfish desires (and that’s how she was manipulated into casting a vote of no confidence for one of the few supporters she had). She’s only selfish when it came to her love for Anakin, and that was after she thought the Republic was lost and their best chance to live any sort of life of peace was to run away and hide

Striving to see the good and potential in anyone, no matter who they are. Even in her enemies or in those who wronged or disappointed her; the Seperatists (even Gunray included), Rush Clovis, Anakin...Padme even tried to see it in Palpatine, until he showed completely who he was. It's this quality of unconditional compassion that made her an incredible heroine. And in passing it on to Luke, she helped to bring Anakin back to the light. Padme is rightly honoured here. Thank you.

Padme was the mother of the rebellion, in more ways than one. Not only in her political actions serving as the foundation of the rebellion's ideology, but also because her children became two of its biggest hero. In Legends continuity, she was probably an even bigger hero than this video suggests: the prequel-cognizant junior novelization of ROTJ heavily implies that, watching Luke suffer under Palpatine's wrath, the memory of Padme and her love broke through to him, and it was in defense of HER son that Anakin Skywalker overcame Darth Vader.

I live near the ocean, and one of my favorite pastimes is going out onto the beach to see what the waves have brought to shore. Mostly, its seashells, driftwood and seaweed. But rarely, it's the corpses of dead sea creatures. Oftentimes, it's impossible to tell what the creature was in life due to the decay and scavenging. The Republic, in many ways, was like the rotten carcasses i see wash up on shore; so rancid and decayed you cant even guess what it was like in life. Many of the senators of the Republic are like the carrion beasts that peck and tear at the remains, desperately trying to gain some advantage. In all honesty, Padme is a tragic figure, because the Republic and ideals she so loved had died long before the first shot of the Clone Wars was fired on Geonosis.

That's a pretty good analogy. Although, I personally feel the Republic wasn't dead before the Clone Wars. It was severely damaged and injured for sure, but it still could have been saved. Terrific video, truly. But it makes me question all the more Padme's death. She doesn't seem the type of woman to lay down and die of a broken heart. I wish they'd given her a true cause of death; internal injury from Anakin's attack, something other than "woe is me, my man hurt me, I must die now". She survived what was essentially betrayal by the Old Republic as it showed itself to be corrupt and irredeemable. She survived the reworking of her world view and hugely changing circumstances. She even maintained there was "good in him" to the end. This is NOT a woman who would give up living without physical cause.

I wouldn't exactly say she was overshadowed by the other main characters. Could very well be just me but growing up with the prequels and somewhat the Clone Wars her character had a pretty sizable impact on me. She was a damn good moral contrast to a corrupt senate. She was a strong and independent minded female character that still was able to embrace her femininity. I've heard some people claim she was a weak female character who was plagued by George's "patriarchal viewpoints" but I could never see it. She stood on her own very well to me. She was that moral lens you could view the politics of the Republic through. Take her out of the movies and the corruption could easily fly right over your head. Maybe it's just me but that's how I've always viewed it.

Won't be surprised if Disney all this time did the most unthinkable: make the universe hate and forget Padme for the rise of Darth Vader. Meaning the fear of being forgotten bigger than death in Batman Arkham Knight now thrown in the SWVerse

wait just curious why do you think they're trying to ignore her? in the past few years, she's had a trilogy of books about her, a pretty heavy plotline in the comics based on her legacy (and her handmaidens), some ties like Panaka recognizing Padme's influence in Leia, she had multiple episodes about her in Forces of Destiny, and she was in TCW season 7. I don't think Lucasfilm is really trying to ignore her, she just doesn't have a lot of screen potential left so they end up exploring her character in other media instead

What I want to know is how the Separatists became the villains they are. Yes, Dooku and Palpatine originally intended for the CIS to be an enemy that makes the Republic become the Empire, but it was only at the end of the Separatist Crisis that both the Separatist Council and Separatist Military were formed. Even if there were senators on the council, there’s no real indication of the Separatist Parliament having any influence on the council. What the hell kept the Separatists from being like the Rebel Alliance or the New Republic? From what it looks like in Canon, the parliament had no true say over the military while the Republic Senate and the Jedi Order had true control, though of course that control is wiped out with the near-extinction of the Jedi and the Senate surrendering nearly all of its power to Palpatine by the end of the war. But with the CIS, it sometimes seems like an early version of the Empire. First comes the powerless legislature. The Bad Batch does show that the Imperial Senate wasn’t completely powerless at first and that Palpatine still had to pull the same moves he did as chancellor. Sometime between the Bad Batch and Andor though, the Senate’s only purpose is to legitimize Palpatine’s rule to the point that there was probably no disruption when the Senate was finally dissolved and completely replaced by the sector governors who already had plenty of power since the Outer Rim Sieges. In the Separatist Alliance, the parliament isn’t completely powerless as it can still make peace with the Republic and would have taken issue with Dooku illegally taking over the banks, but it seems the parliament had no say on military matters. The Separatist Council robbed worlds of money like on Ryloth and imprisoned whole populations as a labor force like on Mon Cala. Dooku even ordered a genocide of a whole planet in the last year of the war in Canon and won a humanitarian award shortly afterwards. What was with this complete separation of power where the parliament handles domestic issues while the council ran the war effort? My best guess in favor of the good Separatists is that they thought Dooku kept the council on a leash. Second comes the evils of the military itself. The Droid Army and Navy were run by horrible and corrupt people, just like the Imperial Military. The only difference is most of these leaders were corporate businessmen in the Separatists and mostly actual military men in the Empire. And yet we get similar outcomes. Armies completely taking over planets and their governments. The Republic of course was not perfect. Many of the first Imperial officers were of course members in the Republic military, which was what elevated them to their Imperial positions. Tarkin in Canon killed thousands of people on a planet just nine months after the war began. There was torture as well. And even after Tarkin left, the following siege wrecked the planet’s environment. Part of me wonders if Palpatine covered up Tarkin’s crimes so he could keep him around. No doubt the Jedi Order would raise hell over what Tarkin did if they knew. Another thing of course is that while the Separatists started the Death Star Project, it was the Republic that kept it going after the Second Battle of Geonosis till the end of the war. Part of me wonders if that is why the Republic only had the Electro-Proton Bomb as a superweapon in Canon. The Death Star must have taken up all the secret superweapon funds the Republic had. Still the Separatists churned out plenty of superweapons just like the Empire, weapons that were needlessly cruel. I won’t include the Subjugator Warship because that seems like a humane and useful weapon, but the Defoliator and the Blue Shadow Virus are definitely brought up in mind. One wiped out all organic material and another could infect and kill every living being. Both were nearly mass produced and deployed all over the galaxy. Finally, the dictator leader. Even the Rebel Alliance had an actual council, even if it led to democratic gridlock like just before Scarif. To be fair like Palpatine, Dooku has to play nice in public. Yet in the Republic, Palpatine never seemed to do any actual commanding or strategy during the war, leaving it up to the Jedi and only checking in for updates while Dooku did actually directly command the military. From the looks of it, Dooku is the only person outside the Separatist Council that gets involved in military matters while in the Republic, senators could pull rank on the Jedi and their clone troopers. Now seriously, what is with this? True, they were also at war just like the Republic, but in the case of the Republic, the transition to Empire took most of not the whole war while in the CIS, it seems Val most instant after the war began. It’s almost like the Separatist Parliament and citizens just left the whole war effort to Dooku and the Separatist Military despite the latter being made up by the very corporations that caused trouble for decades. Why is it the Separatists couldn’t turn out like the Rebel Alliance? It’s basically like the Republic was a good guy version of the Empire and the Separatists were a bad guy version of the Rebels. If the Empire is a cautionary tale about the Republic, are the Separatists a cautionary tale about that what the Rebels could have become?

I have to say that it was pretty clear that the Seps had been planning a war long before the Republic even considered remaking their own army. They had millions of battle droids by the time of Geonosis and that doesn't just happen overnight, even with massive factories, you need a LOT of logistics in place to make that kind of an army, and it would've needed to have taken years to get the ball rolling, even with the backing of the Corporate Alliance.

Timely, considering whose birthday it is today (alongside a certain independence day). A pity Legends, for once in a while (face it, a continuity that has spawned the likes of The Crystal Star, the Denning-verse, and The Old Republic MMO shouldn't be deemed as a flawless godlike entity; if every porkchop were perfect, we wouldn't have hotdogs), did such an important character dirty, all while I'm still debating if Grey DeLisle-Griffin (her Clone Wars 2003 voice actress, among other works) or Catherine Taber (The Clone Wars 2008 VA) is the definitive animated Padme voice. Thoughts?

This is one of the things that frustrated GL. IIRC, he'd voiced his frustration with not being able to flesh out her character more. So he gave it to the book authors and TCW to express her catalytic and pivotal role. The Prequels showed some of it, but, since a lot of the effects she had on Palpatine's defeat came across as hinging on her relationship with Anakin, she got overshadowed. Her advice to Bail shows that she would have beaten him two ways instead of three if she wasn't married to Ani. In fact, I believe that she would have lived long enough to see it through if he hadn't choked her. And THAT happened because Ben stowed away and unintentionally pushed Ani over the edge. 🤦‍♂️ It may have taken 20 years either way, but, with her, leah, and her allies, the Republic could have been restored directly into a new Golden Age, rather than the feeble New Republic we got. Meanwhile, Anakin and Luke would have made the Reformed Jedi together as father and son. Orange and purple lightsabers in equal measure with the white, blue, and green.

And Anakin could unlock his true potential by being true balance instead of only Jedi. In this regard Palpatine was right. Anakin’s should look for large view of the Force (dark side with light side). He is the only one who can be (Chosen One) pure balance. 🙂🤍🖤

The thing that always makes me chuckle though is her whole "I want to save and help people and wish to be a pacifist so I'm gonna marry this guy that I've realistically known for about a week and who confessed to slaughtering a village including the children/babies." I like Padme I think she's an interesting character but that one moment really messes with her character really makes her seem hypocritical, especially for someone who espouses the views she does.

What did you mean about Padme’s choice in men? She “chose” a brave, kind, smart, and SUPER FUCKING SEXY man. That he became Vader is not her fault. I don’t even think it’s Anakin’s fault. He lost literally everyone and everything he loved: his mother, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Padme, his child (they didn’t know she was having twins), his way of life (Jedi order). He’d seen too much of war, had Palpy feeding him lies, and yes, his own actions caused a lot of his suffering, I’d say he actually had severe PTSD. I think Anakin just couldn’t handle it anymore after the Jedi temple events and went “undercover” in his own mind. That’s when Vader took over. Once Padme died, I don’t think Anakin could bring himself out of his hidden space. Too much trauma, too much loss. Add to that, on the rare occasions he did start to come to the fore, he’d be thinking about Padme, and the things he did that actually caused some of his problems. No wonder nothing touched him until Anakin found out about Luke. I think that’s when Anakin began the slow journey back to the Light. Then, seeing Palpy torturing his son (Padme’s son) about to die, Anakin “killed” Vader and saved Luke.

If Ultra Vegito the God Killer has a second season and it includes the titular God Killer going to the SWVerse (possibly during ROTS), I hope your words do not age poorly should the God Killer hakai or absorb Anakin because Vegito might see his behavior as that of a God and Gods sicken him big time. In fact Vegito would even also kill Padme for clapping "divine cheeks".

According to the purest source of canon we have - dialogue from the original trilogy - Padme should have lived longer than the day of her birth. That is, unless George wanted us to believe Leia could remember her mother from the day she was born. Massive Padme plot hole #1. Plot Hole #2 is big enough to fly a Star Destroyer through. It's that Palpatine told Vader that Padmen had died before she gave birth to the children, from his force choke. 19 years later, Vader ought to have been utterly pissed at Palpatine. See search terms: 'Auralnauts Reimagined' and check out 'A New Hope Reimagined' and 'Empire Strikes Back Reimagined'. Return of the Jedi got some treatment too, but it's mostly playing episodes 7-9 and Mandalorian for laughs.

That's the difference between the new character and the old one, old ones didn't do anything for themselves. They were selfless and acted to change something bigger than themselves, and for the greater good. Now, the heroes are self serving and act only to server their goals. This was usually the traits of the vilains.
