Since I make my own fashion dolls in resin, both female and male, I find this review completely fascinating! The details of how mass produced dolls (and or action figures) are made is complex and very involved. This history of "action man" is wonderful and what was really magical was the clip of the figures being made in the factory. Completely BRILLIANT! I watched this three times! Like many viewers I love your videos. If nothing else they take me to the happy time where the only "problem" in life was daydreaming of what Palitoy stuff you might get with your pocket money. Or when watching I can annoy my family and friends by shouting out "I had one of those!". Worse still ...well for them... is when a video makes me want to route through a cupboard. Hopefully to find I still have that rather tatty, missing it's accessories, but still much loved, lump of plastic. And I know I'm not alone in that passion for 1970's toys. Indeed, the same year I finally (OK allegedly) grew-up, got educated & graduated, Roger Johnson, ex-commando parachutist and a real life model for Action Man was given an honorary degree by Chichester University. "Officially" that was for his work in sports, but I've always suspected someone in high places was an Action Man fan. Even now the Action Man effect lives on, especially if you attend any business meeting with blokes of a certain age. If Palitoy, Hornby, Corgi crops up, you can pretty much forget the agenda :)

Action man was also my Indiana Jones figure , one of the best toy lines ever . I remember having a black and gold tonka 4 seater jeep that was perfectly in scale with action man , ( I had plenty of the jeeps , motor bikes , tanks etc etc from the action man range ) . That tonka jeep was a proper tough to made of solid metal and proper softish big tyres , I could put 4 action men in send it down the long path of the house and into the pavement that was a very steep hill ,I used to love watching it speeding off then having some tremendous jump to fly off or it would crash and go tumbling off , all the time the action men were inside the truck , amazing toys they were .

I'm so glad to have been a child during the late 70s to mid 80s , all my older cousins had tonnes of action man stuff and as they got older they gave me everything , then star wars took over and the rest is history , the 70s and 80s were the golden age of toys in my opinion .

Love your videos but now I watch them with joy and sadness. My collection of G.I.Joes was stolen. Over 120 Joe's plus other brands of 1/6 action figures and other collectables. I really miss my Joe's with dogs and all the 101st Airborne figures, my old favorite unit I served in. Thanks for the great vids and history. I really like how Action Man and G.I. I was one of those 90’s kids who saw the hasbro action man line kick in the mid 90’s. Out in Australia 🇦🇺 Parents brought home 2 of the same action man mountain climbing versions, which was because the Sega lock on blue guns and headsets broke. Santa managed to honour the warranty and my brother and I got these toys which had clothes and equipment. No sooner did a new cartoon start on the morning tv shows showing an action man action show. It’s great for myself to see where the original came from and what palitoy had.

It still blows my mind how long large Action Man figures were still popular for in the UK. By 79 I dont recall even seeing a single thing from the brand on shelves or even in comic ads anymore. Even Mego 8" were all over and done with by then I think. Cool video.

@@derekmcmanus8615 Wow, cool. Here in the States G.I. Joe was already a distant memory by the time the new G.I. Joe (Real American Hero) line came out. I wonder if the original line had stayed to also transition over if we'd have gotten a complete different 3 3/4ths line based on that instead of a whole new cast of characters. As much as I'd have loved seeing that, I think it'd have been a loss not to have gotten Snake-eyes, Stormshadow and the rest.

I had both versions of the bodies, none of the painted hair, I loved the griping hand though, and one version of the eyes moving. I don t think I ever had a talking version, but did nt like the cord anyways. I felt it looked bad and unrealistic. man, I d still want one of those today, I have a fake one, not the real thing. I can still remember how I liked the smell right out of the box, memorable! it s great to have all these infos now, better late than never. good show bro.

Action Man was my far and away favourite toy when I was a kid (closely followed by Britain's army toys and even those cheap plastic army figures of the same scale) My favourite Action Man was my SAS figure with hood, gasmask, flack jacket (just like we'd seen in the embassy siege) I also sent off for a Vickers machine gun with those Action Man points.

I'm too young to remember the Original 12' G.I. JOE line. My familiarity with the brand started with it's relaunch as a three and three quarter inch line of figures. I kind of wish HASBRO has licensed this version of Action Man (Would that have been a case of reverse licensing?) instead of sticking with their own. This might have given Palitoy a fighting chance to stay alive. As much as I liked the small figures of my youth, I would have loved to have had these larger cousins too! I know there were re-issues of the HASBRO 12' figures, but they just weren't as cool!

My first Action Man used the original body, which must've still been available on shelves around 1980. He didn't last long though as his adventures deep sea diving (in the bath) took it's toll and rotted apart. My two dynamic physique "Blue Pants Action Men" faired far better exploring the depths.

Well, I have always questioned that excuse because it just doesn’t make sense. Simply BECAUSE it didn’t affect Action Man, Takara’s Combat Joe, and probably most significantly, Mattel’s Barbie. I think it was actually Hasbro just losing faith in the line. Product had gotten lower quality in order to preserve the profit margin at 1966’s level (and of course higher production costs as the global recession played havoc with world Currencies and all that). GI Joe was a mature toy line that had surpassed the ‘industry think’ of a 3 year lifespan, and I think Hasbro just had no idea how to shift thinking to an ‘evergreen’ product line. Bulletman was a bad idea. The Intruders were a low budget cheaped-out concept. There was SO MUCH potential to the Adventure Team that was never realized. *sigh*

@@steveharrison9901 Well, the one thing which supports the material costs theory wasn't the figures themselves, it was the GEAR. If Hasbro wanted to provide a range of cool vehicles, boats, planes, bases, etc., the only way to keep them economical (for the manufacturer AND the consumer) was the shift to a smaller scale. I was always impressed with how much cool hardware the newer Joes got, but it never swayed my opinion of the line. And, yes, Hasbro got lazy and a bit stupid toward the end with those non-GI Joe products. Mike Power was the last, new thing Hasbro did that I could get behind as a kid. ='[.]'=

I agree, the gear was the sticking point. But the solution may well have been external mods and add-on parts. The Action Pack concept was very much the right direction I feel. And again, the oil crisis didn’t stop Barbie from getting cars, dream houses, campers, dune buggies…😁 So Hasbro could easily have done another Headquarters style set, vinyl-covered cardboard with plastic stiffeners and accessories. A new trailer that could be towed by the ATV or Troubleshooter (that also had ‘play alone’ value), something to keep the line fresh. But when I compare the MSV to it’s modified form as the Big Trapper… no, Hasbro just lost interest, whoever was the design creative genius that had done all the work for the Adventure Team line was either gone or browbeaten to the point of not caring anymore. That’s why I like what Tony is doing with these posts. Showing the passion in what would otherwise be soulless manufacturing of product. Hasbro created something wonderful and impactful to a generation. Then they gave up on it. And yes the ‘80s revival to Real American Hero (but in a small size) had AMAZING vehicles that made me weep with envy. I was older and not really interested in wee Joes but when I saw that Shuttle Complex set….but it was too bloody big to fit in my car! Lol! And now Hasbro has NO idea what to do with GI Joe. Again. I’m sorry but $30 USD figures is not a sustainable growth business model.
