Not only was this game compelling to play, it had a surprising emotional impact as one progressed deeper into story, consequences of their choice and the inevitable paranoia buildup. Bringing in the love interest of a fellow border officer in one of the scenarios and the subsequent development was a truly grueling experience for me.

He probably has a different mindset. I feel like shaping new ideas and realising them is more important for him. Creating a sequel for fan service or the sake of money is probably boring for him. What matters is not just to have fun and do more of the same, but to discover and show different feelings, interactions, experiences. At least thats what I take away from his games.
@sugarkane1571
@sugarkane1571 2 жыл бұрын
@@balazsdemcsak5391 I also feel like there really is no standard way of making an “improved” sequel without removing some of the game’s charm, while making a direct copy would disappoint fans for having basically the same experience. I think some kind of DLC might work, but it’s more likely that any attempted improvements with a sequel would just bring disappointment, like Party Hard 2.
@balazsdemcsak5391
@balazsdemcsak5391 2 жыл бұрын
@@sugarkane1571 Maybe. My point of view is that this game is not like a regular game. It’s not meant to entertain and keep you in. It’s artistic, because it has a narrative and mechanics that let you discover what its all about. If anything was added to extend the playtime or to serve the need for an enjoyable experience it would hinder the “vibe”. A DLC or sequel would only work if it could bring the same shock, as realising how little or large choices a soviet state border guard has. If you are sitting in front of the computer to become the best passport stamper champion you are missing out on something. Which is fine, i guess, but its also nice to have this transformative experience there for contrast.

Obra Dinn was a stroke of genius in my mind and I really wish that if Lucas isn't going to do anything more with it that he perhaps just licenses the idea to another developer to continue to make other scenarios. Releasing one every year or two would be enough. The theme and format is just awesome, a true detective style game that makes you feel incredibly smart and stupid all at the same time and it also reflects Lucas' point about being able to step away from something and tackle something else. If you're really struggling with one part (which you will) then you can tackle something else. Pure genius.

It's funny in the end, that thing about "fun". It's probably an English language thing I guess, but it's not "not fun" in the same sense of it being boring or making you feel uninterested or that you feel like stopping. Just because it is "painful", for a lack of a better word, doesn't mean it isn't entertaining. The best works of art we've seen aren't an easy and simple watch/read too, they take some effort from the audience and that "not fun loop" in Papers, Please is part of it.

@@ThatGuyGlen Yeah, as someone who wants to make games myself (visual novels to be exact) I really look up to people with all of these talents. All I can imagine doing is the writing. The programming, music, art, all of that being done by one person is such an impressive tale. The Cat Lady definitely has an M rating for a reason, but it is an extremely good look at depression. The developer apparently got a lot of inspiration from working at a hospital and tackles subjects like depression, anorexia, and cancer throughout his games. That's one of the major reasons that I found these games so good, especially since I have depression and thought The Cat Lady was an amazing portrayal of it. Anyhow, rambling a bit, so I'll conclude by saying I look forward to your future videos regardless of what you cover! =D

Glad you're enjoying it, more videos are coming! Baby is You has been on my list for a while, but I hadn't heard about Environmental Station Alpha yet. I'll look into that one, thanks for the suggestion!

Love the video a ton. Especially how you explained the game itself well for someone like me who hasn't played it before. Could you do a vid on the Tony Hawk or Skate series. There older games unless you do the new TH remake but it would be really cool to learn more on how they were made. Keep it up. Can't wait to see what you do next

Much appreciated, glad you liked it! I mainly focus on indie games, but maybe some day I'll have the time and recourses to cover more retro and AAA titles. It's definitely on my list and I loved playing the old Tony Hawk games myself :D

Its insane to me that a small 5 dollar game i had found on release would grow so substantially, My thought when i found the game was "this is an adorable little indie game" and i thought it wouldnt get a lot of popularity lmao

Glen, I know you get this a lot, but hear me out Your voice, and the video's editing make it so that this is a good video to listen to while you're doing another thing. I can not express how many hours I have spent just playing Terraria, fishing while listening to you explain the story of Papers, Please.

@@ThatGuyGlen I am so glad I found you amongst the others. Your videos have this different level of editing, from the themed aspect from the game itself, to the title of the video itself, it all feels that you put in tons of hardwork into it. And I respect that alot.

Glad to have you! And I really appreciate you saying that. A ton of work does go into every single video, which is why I’m currently only able to make one every month or so. Comments like yours make it worth it though and tells me I’m making the right type of content!
@perhapsYoYo

@@ThatGuyGlen I understand that you can only make a video every month or so, but if the editing is charmingly awesome, then waiting a month for a new vid is worth it!

Hey, great video as always! Always interesting to hear more about the most talented people in the industry. And Pope sure is a brilliant guy! Now, a recommendation. I would love if you could make a video about Rain World. For how amazing the game is, there is literally no coverage of it anywhere, except from one GDC video on the animations and a handful of articles on sites like Gamasutra. The rest are just reviews. I don't know if many people would be interested, but I most definitely would love to see a longer form documentary of it! Either way, keep up the good work!

Thank you, glad you liked it! Hadn't heard about that game yet, but it looks super cool! Definitely going to get it on my Switch and the development story seems really interesting as well. I'm covering some other games first, but Rain World has a spot on my list now ;) Thank you for the suggestion!
