Bring back "Home Economics" and "Personal Finance." My parents gave me $500 for the entire semester. If I wanted more, I had to get a job. Which I did, in the science library, electron microscopy lab, etc. It was an invaluable experience imo to have to work in college and learn the meaning or work and the value of money. I even worked as a stevedore on the docks in grad school; extremely hard work but you REALLY learn to appreciate every dollar.

First job I was 17. Never got an allowance. Paid for my cellphone, car, insurance, college tuition, dates… everything but housing (lived at home) Was what it was. College paid off, making well over 6 figures, zero debt, loading up on assets… Gotta do what you gotta do

I really like the idea of matching the amount your kids make. It incentivizes them to make more!

I completely agree about the immense opportunity with financial literacy. Unfortunately, I think our government wants a populace that is dependent on government, so they frown on it.

Think about it people are more inclined to take on debt from banks if you keep them financially illiterate. So when all the students graduate high school what's typically drilled into their heads? It's college and you have a lot of people who go for degrees that aren't needed in the real world, you have others who go for the fun, and you also have those that are trying to get legitimate jobs. I think it's no coincidence that student loans are up there in debt, and student loans is the first. We have a society that encourages you to take on home loans, car loans, ect and these risks wouldn't be taken if more people were financially literate. Not to say these types of loans can't be benificial. I hate to believe this but it does seem as if the education system is trying to keep people financially illiterate sadly, and the only benefit I see by doing this is that more people will be inclined to take on debt if they don't really understand what they're getting into. I hope I'm wrong about all this; it's just a perspective.

I started working when I was 14. My parents charged me $400 a month rent plus whatever expenses they needed money for. They were not doing what was best for me. They just wanted me to pay their bills. They never gave me anything but just talked about everything they did for me. When I struggled they never helped me. Parents that truly care about their children do not have their children get jobs to help them pay bills. Toxic parents do. My parents did not care about my education. They were just entitled narcissistic baby boomers. I despise them to this day because as I got older I realized they did not really care about me. I will be making sure that my child is educated and prepared for his future.

It’s true. We have to teach our next generation on to build community’s because communities make and can teach our kids what we weren’t taught.

I learned to work when I was 10. At 14, my dad told me. If you want a phone, shoes, personal Wants. “You put half and I put half. At the age of 15 I moved out of my parents house.

The best way to teach a kid value of money is to teach them not to value money. It has no value, it's simply means of transporting wealth or value . When you could live with no money, you're able to thrive with money.. And if we could make money, we wouldn't have to earn it.. Last and foremost. Don't ever laugh at a kid's crazy idea.. Their crazy mindset could become big money in their future.. Doing something that seems foolish now but ultimately making a fortune in ways you couldn't imagine

On a lighter note, PBD's kids could get a loan for 5k, get 5k and pay back the loan and their dad's 5k every month. I'm just saying the matching system is flawed.
