Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon is one of the most famous and best selling albums of all time. A flagship release of the progressive rock genre that dominated the late 60s and much of the 70s, it changed the world of music forever with genre-fusing instrumentation and progressive vocal sampling techniques. Pink Floyd are responsible for such masterpieces as Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, and of course, Dark Side of the Moon. The members of this legendary band include Roger Waters on bass, David Gilmour on guitar, Rick Wright on keyboards and Nick Mason on drums. Syd Barrett was one of the founding members but he left the band in the late 60s after their album Saucerful of Secrets because of mounting mental problems caused by overexposure to psychedelic drugs. Pink Floyd are one of the best selling bands of all time and remain popular to this day, with former members Roger Waters and David Gilmour still releasing music to this day. Roger Waters recently embarked on a world tour, making many statements against US President Donald Trump in the process.

It was Easter 1973, and I was just 8 years old. My parents got all of us kids Easter baskets. My basket was different. I had the chocolate bunny, but also had "Dark Side of the Moon," which was just weeks old at the time. I ended up listening to the record with headphones on, while watching the other kids do the Easter egg hunt. This was my parents' way of telling me that I was growing up.

My dad was 14 during the 80's, and was getting into rock music. Stuff like Dark Side of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie inspired him to take up guitar. He never got a teacher, as his parents were busy dealing with 7 children, so he taught himself. My dad would listen try to repeat jingles from commercials and Pink Floyd songs. When he was around 18, he got into a band. They were semi-successful, got a record deal, and played in front of 60,000 people. My dad still plays music in his small band, but only as a hobby now. When we were cleaning out our basement, I stumbled upon his old albums. My dad shared this story with me, which was a nice experience.

I was 16 years old in April 1973 and someone just got the album. We entered an abandoned house, the album owner had a portable turntable, we sat down and started passing a hash pipe. We were a group of 5 who usually laughed and were talkative. 2 or 3 minutes into the album, everyone fell silent. Just mesmerized. When someone spoke..."who is this?" "Its Pink Floyd" was the answer. It was so unique for the time, we couldnt really figure it out. Just that it was special. A few weeks later, we would be listening to it over and over, several times a day for weeks and months. We quickly recognized it was an absolute masterpiece. In a space of 10 years, from when the Beatles were no.1 with simplistic, 3 chord songs like I Wanna Hold your Hand.... to this... was like going through an accelerated, massive evolutionary change. I dont think any other piece of music from that era could hold anyones interest for decades to follow as DSOTM has done.

For the most part, this is a good video, describing the motivation and process behind the album. I say “for the most part”, because of its glaring omission of at least mentioning Alan Parson’s contributions to the album. As the album’s recording/mix engineer, his own talents played a big part in the sound of the album; first, in capturing the performances of the band, and then combining all the performances and various sonic textures into a cohesive body. Alan’s work on the album resulted in it being a highly immersive experience that was magical for the listener, and I think that this is worth mentioning. FWIW

Us and them isnt just about war, by the way. Its about human nature also. Humans love to make and take sides. Conservatives v liberals Capitalists v communists Humans v nature Etc. Not to say we shouldnt have those debates, but we often become part of those sides rather than having our own real opinion. As you will see many people knowingly lose arguments just to stay on “their” side.

An iconic album such as Dark Side of the Moon can't be over rated. Whomever says this is expressing a type of jealousy that is based on the huge sales and $$ generated by the album. When it came out I was 10 years old but my friends older sister had a copy. It blew me away, I've never heard anything like it before or after. The first time I heard Dark Side I was on the air playing album cuts on a NY college FM radio station. The album had just arrived and I decided to preview it on air, without hearing it first. I put side 1 on and it stayed on for the full side. I was floored. It was the best album I'd ever heard. I remember fumbling about, flipping the record over, not wanting to break the trance. I put side 2 on as fast as I could. The audience could hear me as I did. Side 2 was better. To this day Dark Side is still the best album in my opinion.

originally called Tea Set..Barratt quickly changed it to Pink Floyd Sound at a gig they were playing as there was another band called Tea Set playing...Pink Anderson and Floyd Council were two Blues albums Syd Barratt had.

To me the best album of all time, and I'm a Beatles fan. Thanks to Roger Walters for bringing his fantastic concerts to Australia. Just a note, this album has sold over 45 million copies and rated by those who know as one of the best.

My first listening to DSOTM, was in 1973 when I was 18 years old. I had put together old headphone cords to make my headphones reach out to my roof top. I went out my window and climb onto the roof. I then put on the headphones and had my Sister lower the needle onto the album, then my trip began. It was a clear night, with a full moon and the stars were shinning bright. The music seemed like it took me out there to those celestial bodies. It was the closest thing I have ever had that may be described as a religious experience.
