I'm not sure if the creator of this video is just a fucking idiot or if he's trying to bait people into arguing to get more attention but the idea that we need to allow ourselves to remain vulnerable so that we don't piss off the people who want to strip our freedom and steal our data is fucking batshit. That implies we live in some fairy-tale land where bureaucrats will ever be satisfied with compromising and letting us keep most of our freedom. Compromising one single bit on human privacy rights with the government is the quickest way to make them comfortable with taking more and more from us. If we get better encryption that prevents some current functionalities to work, people would end up to just disable encryption, going from a situation when they've got partial protection to a situation with much less protection. What strikes me is the overarching security/privacy issues with law enforcement holding that data and accessing information more personal than the stuff in your home. I say leave the vulnerability, but the requirements to exploit it should be stringent, and all data must be purged at the resolution of the trial, regardless of guilt.
@thefreedomguyuk3 жыл бұрын
It's difficult to disagree with you there. But, sadly, the bit about police needing a warrant to download data from a mobile device does not apply here in the UK. Since 2012, our legislation has been clearly stating that police are entitled to seize any mobile device from any person, irregardless of the person being suspected of having committed a crime or not. Police are also permitted to search any mobile device, and to download all data. There is no legislation preventing police from storing these downloaded data indefinitely. We, the citizens, are by law required to reveal to police all passcodes to all mobile devices. Refusal to provide police with passcodes is a criminal offense. We WILL go to prison if we refuse, for a very long time. This is just sooo fucked up. Our devices are containing data about any location we've been at, what we say, what we think, who we are communicating with. Basically, our entire life in details. And police are entitled to get all this data from any person they see fit to demand it from.

No compromise, no half measures. Yes they could lobby to remove all encryption, provide back doors, etc. But at this stage it will have no bite, but I could see a scenario where defeating their attempts to unlock your phone could land you in a cage. One option is to have a password that allows access to the factory default so they have the illusion on being able to see what is on your "factory default" phone enough to pass muster, but have your real data protected with another password mechanism. Or a pass sequence that signals the phone to back itself up on the cloud and wipe itself clean.

Ultimately it's everyones choice. If user were given a choice to buy a phone with no back door or a phone with "kinda sorta back door" that could invade their privacy, what do you think they would choose? It's a difficult to say because they already have enough meta data about you and your friends that they don't really need back door, but in case that you want to have something private on your device, they could potentially get it and you wouldn't be able to stop them. This might seem silly but when I talk to my friends there's no record of that conversation. If you weren't there you don't know what has been said. And I believe a lot of people would like to think that if they message something to someone this information will be treated the same way.

@Dpkde3 жыл бұрын
@@eswee6780 it’s abit different on iPhones than the comment above. It does a couple things, mainly calls the emergency services. If you have emergency contacts set, when you press it and let it run the 5 seconds, it rings the emergency services and sends a text to your emergency contacts letting them know your exact location and that the emergency buttons were triggered.

Even if these vulnerabilities are solved, couldnt/WOULDNT they just subpoena the SIM provider to ... you know... clone your phone? I mean, if you wanna believe that "oh no they cant do that because it's illegal" - fine, but it's still the way how thing are done - except for petty random cases.

I think the best approach is to allow law enforcement access to very basic information that is used to help citizens for the purpose of helping to keep individuals safe from serial killers, gangs, and cybercriminals. Anti-terrorism is another important job of law enforcement however I think it is too easy for any individual to be labeled a potential terrorist and to then be put under constant surveillance. If LE has something instead of nothing they will most likely not push back as much as they may if they were stripped of all ability to track mobile devices -- trees that sway in the wind don't break. It is also important that legislation and law enforcement / para-military technology are developed together. As consumers and citizens it is up to us to do the research and take precautionary measures against hackers and cybercriminals, and to stay up to date on law enforcement technology, protocols, practices, and current legislation. It is also up to us as individuals not to be careless.

I wouldn't worry about the police in the UK "hacking" anything, they can barely put their clothes on the right way round and their "technology" is incredibly old. "ActionFraud" the UK's cyber-crime division is also mostly a joke and does pretty much nothing other than logging reports.

UK police does not have to hack anything. You must give them all your data if they ask for it. Not my words, it's the law...

I’d rather just use those old flip phones. If it’s photos, then I will definitely not keep them on a computer or laptop. Just saying that moving my photos onto a USB flash drive is far better and much safe to store your information. Sorry Apple, but the value of privacy must be kept at a level of 100%. Security would be an option users would need for usage, and not necessarily for security to take over and misuse your data. Why flip phones? Well the answer is simple: no need for updates and upgrading.

Get a Blackberry and put it on a proper Blackberry secure data and phone plan. Blackberry is used by governments, and high level corporate people because of the very high security. The only way to decrypt a Blackberry law enforcement would have to get a court warrant and submit it to Blackberry. They would need to have the serial number and hardware key number for the particular phone. To get this info they would need to have possession of the phone in the first place. With a Blackberry smart phone it is safest to only use your mobile data plan and not use public WiFi. You can do your personal business, and your private affairs without worry for security. Make sure any additional software you install is approved for security. Blackberry has a utility called DTEK. It can scan the phone and advise about any security issues and recommend how to correct anything that can be a potential breach. Common citizens and non government people in most of the dictator type countries are forbidden to own a Blackberry phone. These dictator leaders asked Blackberry to sell a phone in their country for the general users that can be decoded by the government. Blackberry at the time refused to comply.

My advice is to see if these anti-encryption people are idiots or hypocrites by trying to get them to post personal info about themselves if they fall into the wrong hands. Example, credit card info would be a big one for bait. It would provide a way to throw the "nothing to hide, nothing to fear" argument back at these people. If they do post this kind of stuff on social media, we don't cry for them. If they don't, we just point out that this is why encryption is needed.
