I think a large part of the problem is not that we disagree, but how we disagree. People, individually and collectively, have forgotten how to discuss points of disagreement. It's undeniable that social media has been a major, if not the most insidious, catalyst in this inability to talk to people we disagree with. Politics and religion are two domains in which we entrench our identities most deeply, and this is not ideal for the dispassionate disposition one needs to be able to explore disagreements in a good faith manner and without getting emotionally triggered. I have no idea how progress can be made on a broader scale, but, I think individual relationships can really benefit from keeping this context in mind, and perhaps the "national dialogue" moves in the right direction as a consequence of regular people keeping this in mind.

Even when I was much more liberal, I was disturbed by this aura of "we are not just right, we are superior to conservatives and frankly everyone." I jave read a lot on the psychogy of status seeking. The paradox I have observed is that many self-professed equality-fanatics are some of the most status-obsessed people I have ever met. Including some family members.

When you get down to the root, there’s only 2 kinds of problems. Ones you can fix, ones you can’t. No use worrying about what you can fix, just fix it. No use worrying about the ones you can’t fix, because you can’t fix it. Up to the election this was something you could do stuff about.. donations, volunteering, phone banking/canvassing, holding conversations with others. Attempt to get out the vote. Once Election Day was over, the problem became the former. I wish you the best in finding a way to bring peace to yourself. On the bright side of being a supporter of the losing ticket.. you now have 4 years where you don’t have to defend the actions and you can become the heckler of everything he does.

Politics can really disrupt your worldview, even to the point of causing psychotic breaks. And Democrats probably have it much worse in that it's quite difficult to stray from the mainstream Democrat viewpoint without being immediately cancelled. Republicans have it a bit easier with more flexibility, you don't have to agree 100% with everything to still be accepted. The stress and anxiety can be quite extreme on both sides as well.
