I love Joel Salatins systems. Growing pigs and chickens is not the problem. Marketing and sales is were you spend all your time and effort. Selling pork and poultry retail direct to consumer is the hard part. We need to spend more time educating people how you develop a market to sell 10000 chickens and 300 pigs retail.

I understand the raising part of pork. The only thing I am confused about is how I go about marketing to sell my pigs/chickens/cows etc.? It’s something I’ve been trying to figure out for a while. I have the 20 acres and the knowledge to raise pigs I just don’t know where, who, and how to go about selling the meat. Anything help would be greatly appreciated.

I live in Las Vegas and used to live near a pig farm called RC pig farm. There was even a Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe featuring the farm. That family does a lot for the Las Vegas community bc they have a contract with several casinos to recycle their food waste. There were days though that the farm would stink to high heaven bc they’d need to cook the dairy waste before giving it to the pigs. Also, the pigs would scream murder when the cold winds would kick up. It was a frighteningly scary sound. And the coyotes would hang around at night too. Now the farm has moved 30 miles north from its original spot. But it was thought of as an unlikely farm bc it survives this 114 degree Desert summer heat waves. Thanks for your impressive movie shorts. I’ll likely not have a farm, but I enjoy watching you learn and grow yours.

Amazing how simple it can all be. But at the same time, it’s sad to see 75% cost on the final product. A huge chunk of that is processing fees. I might have missed it in this video but the length of stay in each paddock is defined by the speed the pigs can eat 2 tones (or was that pounds?) of feed. Small pigs need 12 days, finishers are down to 5 days. So the cost of feed is always there too. A small homestead should be able to run 5-10 pigs thru 2 acres without having to start at paddock 1 until next year. You could even rotate them so that they end up at your butcher station at the end of the season so you really never need to move them. There are real possibilities for a small homestead .

An hour a day or even if you say 12 hours a week for ~$55k a year is a fairly good side hustle. Keep in mind, that tractor isn't just used to move pigs. I'm in California's Central Valley, so land costs are much higher and irrigation will be a must. Call it $40K, that still works out to over $75.00 an hour. Food for thought. Thanks for sharing.

If you are pasturing fewer pigs, do leave them in each paddock longer or make the paddocks smaller? 10 pigs would have less of an impact on the land than 50.

Joel is an amazing guy and steward of the animals and the land. He has figured out a way to make money while using land most owners wouldnt have used and brought them back to life. The ethical way he treats the animals while in his care is amazing as well. Hey animals has a use on the farm and they all seem to be happy doing what they would naturally do. One day I hope to be able to have a farm like his on a smaller scale just because of the ethical way it is. Not a fan of these big huse corporate farms that are all about production at all cost or focus on one thing. This style of rotational farming isnt new, but it has been forgotten and thanks to Joel and his group it is making a comeback little by little. Keep up the great work Justin!
