Anthony Esolen on Objectification:
The human body is a precious thing, worthy of our reverence. It is not a tool, not an object of consumption like a steak or a keg of beer, not an animate provider of pleasure. It is the outward expression of a profound mystery, that of another human being. When we meet another human person, when we look at his or her face, we are in the presence of a creature whose like we have never found in all the rest of the universe. The human person is open to infinity … He can do more than apprehend the things he observes, he can imagine worlds he has never seen … honor and reverence is due to the astounding mystery of the human person … It is a contradiction to say, “I honor the human person,” while treating the human body as separable from the person using it as a tool, devouring [pornographic] images of it … One cannot at once love the beautiful and desire to defile it. It is like loving the Pieta with an ax (P. 51).

Some can't tell the difference between sexual desire and lust. Wanting to be seen as beautiful or handsome is fine, but wanting people to lust after you isn't. The first frames you as a person, but the second is objectifying. I see this in discussions about dressing modestly too. People think you're afraid of looking good and being ashamed of your body by covering up too much. In reality, true modesty is about dressing with dignity and reverence for your body and those of others.

Thanks for your important work! The observation made by the women in the interview really corresponds to my own experience as a male who started watching porn at ~13 yo and having his first girlfriend at ~17 yo. I exactly did what the women described and wasn't even aware of the depravity of the whole situation.

The study you mention raises far more questions to me than it answers: what do their brains do when they see women in the same poses and clothing but live and in front of them? What about their wives, pictured and in person? To conclude from it “see, you objectify sexualized women in photos” seems like a massive stretch. If they have the same reaction to their naked wives, does that mean men should never see their wives naked? Perhaps the male brain naturally reacts that way to sexualized women in all contexts and the trend of objectifying women has more to do with masturbation as an objectifying activity (of oneself and the focus of the act). To be clear, I am opposed to pornography and think it is a wretched Blight in society that should be outlawed. That being said, I think greater care needs to be taken when referencing these studies because we run the risk of looking foolish and harming the cause when we misuse studies.

This is a very interesting point. My assumption is that this would generally vary from person to person. Though I am assuming that from a biological stand point, we would instinctively gravitate our attention towards it since the organism's main purpose is to reproduce (from a biological standpoint). (Now this is further individual speculation) Now what particularly distinguishes us from a regular organisms is intelligence which affects our instincts to some capacity (so while typically if a creature or organism sees something desirable it will try to have it, which as an example in the animal kingdom it's VERY common for males to harass the opposite sex) humans use intelligence to counter act these instincts to some capacity, and admittedly this response can vary from human to human which I think is what makes us get people like abusers and offenders. There is a great scientific article regarding intelligence vs instincts if you wanna check it out. I think it beautifully adds to the conversation. Instinct and Intelligence - PhilArchive philarchive.org/archive/MILIAI-12 I think this video did a good job explaining that but like anyone researching something they can often lose track of how much background knowledge someone can have on a subject.

I understand what you are saying wrt objectification, but can't this dogma be extended to acting in general. Not just pornography. Can't pornography be enjoyed as entertainment? There are many fantasies that can never be realised those that are curious, porn is an excellent tool for this. Wouldn't you say? Same goes for prostitution, most prostitutes or sugar babies hang out with their clients, the sex is actually a part of it. Is that objectification too?

I also would say this demonizing of pornography is exaggerated. Also a lot of here on youtube are manosphere videos or god related videos. I think seeing someone as a person first but still see their attractive attributes is a more realistic way to look at objectification
