Matthew Michael "Matt" Murdock is a man who had been blinded as a young boy by a radioactive substance that fell into his eyes from a crashed vehicle, and even though he lost his sight, his other four remaining senses were heightened to superhuman levels. After his father was killed by mobsters, Murdock was trained by Stick to become a warrior, using his disability as an advantage to fight for the Chaste. However, Murdock's compassion with Elektra led him to be rejected by Stick, as he then returned to Columbia University with Foggy Nelson to gain his law degree and dedicated his life to fight injustice where he could find it in New York City as a lawyer by day with his law firm Nelson and Murdock, and by night as a vigilante known as Daredevil. Murdock's actions as a crime fighter had eventually put him into conflict with a crime lord named Wilson Fisk. Murdock used his skills to expose Fisk's criminal activities and then have him taken to prison.
Daredevil's actions in New York City and his strict moral code soon put him into conflict with the Punisher, a vigilante who believed that death was the only punishment for crime as he caused chaos across the city. While dealing with the Punisher, Daredevil was also thrown into more personal turmoil by the sudden return of Elektra as well as Stick, who had both attempted to recruit Daredevil to join into their conflict against the Hand. Murdock eventually managed to find a middle ground with the Punisher while also defeating the Hand's member Nobu Yoshioka, although losing Elektra in the process and watching Nelson and Murdock fall apart as Foggy Nelson still struggled to cope with Murdock's double life as both a lawyer and a crime-fighting vigilante.
Following the demise of Elektra and his law firm falling apart, Murdock then retired from his vigilante activities as Daredevil and attempted to live a normal life as a lawyer, while telling Karen Page his own true secret identity in the hope of repairing their relationship. However, once the Hand began their attack on New York City and successfully managed to resurrect Elektra, Murdock began investigating, becoming the lawyer of Jessica Jones in order to find out whatever she knew. Murdock and Jones had then joined forces with Luke Cage and Iron Fist to destroy the Hand, while Murdock also reclaimed his Daredevil identity. However, the conflict with the Hand claimed the life of Stick and, in a final effort to redeem Elektra, Daredevil had stayed behind with her while the Midland Circle collapsed around them.
Murdock managed to survive the building collapse and was taken to the care of Paul Lantom and Maggie Grace, although his body was broken and his mind disillusioned. During his recuperation at Saint Agnes Orphanage, Murdock had learned of Wilson Fisk being released early from prison and once again made it his mission to defeat him. This time, Murdock turned away his friends and family and also made his time as a vigilante his one and only priority, putting his life as Matt Murdock behind him. Although Fisk had thought of many of the contingencies to his plans, blackmailing Ray Nadeem and using Benjamin Poindexter to impersonate and frame the Daredevil, Murdock eventually managed to gain the upper hand over Fisk and defeated him, blackmailing Fisk with his threats to Vanessa Marianna if Fisk revealed Murdock's true identity or targeted his friends. Afterwards, he, Karen and Foggy created a new law firm to continue fighting injustice.

Before the Netflix series I hated how people underestimated Daredevil. "Oh, so he's not actually blind, he can still see." No, it's more than that. Matt has to continuously concentrate to understand the world around him through 4 senses, while regular folk just have the big one. Telepaths get dazed and discombobulated when peering into Matt's head. The sheer amount of discipline is what makes Daredevil Daredevil.

Season 3 was great, the villain Bullseye was menacing and we got to see his perspective as well. Even though the hallway fight was incredible, the prison fight in season 3 is remarkable, and a longer one-take than the hallway fight.

Well the hallway fight is actually 4 takes spliced together very seamlessly to make it seem like one take, same with the prison fight, but I completely agree. The prison fight feels more tense/desperate as Matt has been drugged.

Idk about my favorite fight, but Matt's full backstory with Electra (I believe it was season 2 episode 2) is some of the best 45 minutes of television I've ever seen. The story of his dates with Electra and Karen cutting back and forth perfectly symbolizes his inner struggles for the entire show. He's constantly torn between dangerous, ruthless Electra, and kind, supportive Karen in the exact same way he's torn between killing dangerous criminals and letting them live. He's like a much better written Batman.

Season 2 was still good. Instead of bring Nobu back and having Elektra be a focal point of the plot. I would have multiple factions fight over hell's kitchen such as Union Allied, the hand (lead by madam Gao), and various others. I'd have Elektra get kidnapped by the hand instead of a death fake out.

It isn't described as echo location tho. In the comics when anyone calls it that Matt corrects them that it's a "radar sense"....He picks up ambient vibrations which is different than how typical echolocation works.

It's not just echolocation it's a "radar" sence (he visualises it like fire) where he combines all his sences to give him a full picture.

@@djdubc09271 that's passive echolocation- listening to the sounds around you for information about space- and it's what Matt is doing. It's still very much echolocation, though. Active exploration ('typical' or sonar or bat-like, take your pick) is just the action of sending those sounds out to begin with. Active has the advantage of clarity, passive of greater speed and range, but they're both still echolocation. Radar is just the electromagnetic (i.e. light) version of active echolocation (Sonar). I have a passive form of RADAR-like detection. It's called sight.

My favourite season has to be 1, I love the menacing take he took on daredevil. Like when he has that man against the roof and tells him he enjoys hurting people, when he saves Claire and taunts her capture, and finally when he's interrogating the man for Fisks name. Such an intimidating opponent and really lives up to the devils name.

as an almost dr (be graduating by the end of the year hopefully) i can think of caquexia, which leads to a loss of weight (due to destruction of the muscle), loss of appetite, and due to that all the systems kinda shut down. My theory is that its like feeling when a car has something wrong, are the shifts of the transmission feeling odd?, does the steering wheel feel hard?, is the motor making too much noise? it is the the fuel having a below average mpg?

As much as I loved season 1, season 3 takes the cake for me just because you see Matt at his lowest point and seeing him battle it out against Fisk/Bullseye aswell as his own morality just made the whole season more engaging for me.

Man I love this show so much. It's got the best fight scenes in all of the MCU because everything feels like there is real danger and impact for Matt. He's not a super soldier like Captain America or the Black Panther, and he's not a billionaire with amazing tech like Tony Stark. He's something better. A more or less normal human with some heightened abilities, so when he's fighting Nobu in season one, he really could have died. Or even the hallway scene from the second episode, he gets tired. The fighting actually weighs on him, which is something I wish Marvel movies took into account more. I think the best season is the last one honestly. Although the show was cancelled, had it only bene planned to be 3 seasons, I feel like that ending would still be very fitting for the characters. Season 2 is my least favorite, but it still has some of the most memorable moments from the show. If he gets brought into the fold in some other MCU content, I hope they do him justice because Charlie Cox was born for this role

My favorite fight scene was in Defenders when he fought Iron Fist. Daredevil didn't even think twice about fighting the world's greatest martial artist with a nuke hand. And for the majority of the fight he was kicking Iron fist's ass.

They seem to have buffed Kingpin in Hawkeye, seeing how he fully tanked getting shot in the chest with an arrow twice and then slammed through a brick wall by a car with no injury. (Also, his death was off screen which means he’s definitely not actually dead.) I’m going to guess that, following this, Matt Murdock will also be much more powerful in the MCU than he was in the Netflix series.

Idk how buffed he was. He handled Punisher like a child and withstood a massive beating from Matt in season 3 without even coming close to being knocked out. Also Fisk always wears body armour so I’m not sure if those arrows actually did much damage. Yeah the car was pretty excessive tho

I think they were playing up Fisk's size in Hawkeye more. The way they framed him in the shots, to the very heavy footfall folly work. Really staying true to the "big guy" side of The Kingpin.

Shang-Chi is more skilled but based on their on screen portrayals, Matt’s endurance is something else. Shang-Chi would probably win but Matt (Frank too) are hard to put down unless you get lucky with a knockout. I don’t think Matt’s senses are a big enough edge to best Shang-Chi.

I feel like it’s important to mention that, like you said, Matt feels physical sensations more intensely than other people. This is why in the comics he’s addicted to really unhealthy sexual relationships that get him in a lot of trouble. I always appreciate superheroes that have human flaws, too, because it’s a good reminder that even the best of us aren’t perfect.

@@kirbydied2875 Throughout the comics, Matt has had multiple sexual and romantic relationships that almost always end poorly for everyone involved. Elektra is the best example because things go south almost every time she pops up, but Matt still falls for her. There’s also Typhoid Mary who was a literal supervillain, Karen Page who ended up being a porn star and drug addict before she was killed, and his ex-wife Milla who went insane and was locked up in an asylum. He continuously gives into his lustful desires and messes up not only his own life, but the lives of those women as well. My theory is that because Matt’s senses are so much stronger than ours, these sexual interactions are much more intense than they are for normal people, and therefore even more addicting.

He’s a very pious Catholic who frequently engages in violence and sexual deviance. This was a fantastic video. I really enjoyed this deep dive into the power set, skill, and gear of Daredevil. Growing up reading comics, I always found Daredevil fascinating due to the fact that he’s blind in the traditional sense but yet he can see in a multitude of different ways by using his amazing superhuman senses. I really like what Frank Miller did with the character during his run on the comic. He made Daredevil so much more than a poor man’s version of Spiderman which I never thought was a good representation of the character. Yes they have some similar attributes but overall they couldn’t be any more different. With that being said, I think it’s super exciting that Kevin Fiege finally decided to bring Charlie Cox back as Matt Murdock/ Daredevil by properly folding him into the MCU. How exactly is Matt Murdock going to show up in the MCU is yet to be scene (I haven’t seen Spiderman No Way Home yet.) Charlie Cox’s Daredevil has so much potential and the character is so great that he deserves to be not only utilized properly but to be included in multiple facets to the MCU. For example, Daredevil could pop up in several different tv shows like maybe Moon Knight season 2 and She Hulk. I can even see Daredevil showing up in other films as well. Anyways, you did a great job breaking down the character and as always, I look forward to seeing more of your content. Cheers!

When he gets to fight superhumans he does hold his own with the biggest example being Post resurrection Electra. However him actually struggling in most of his fights (like any human should when fighting this many or this skilled opponents) is what makes his fights legendary like the hallway scene.

7:15 As a watchmaker this scene bothered me. Daredevil could head the watch ticking, but it clearly ticked once per second. Which is not possible. It's a Cartier Santos and houses, as can be seen on the dial, an automatic movement. Automatic movement means it's mechanical and mechanical movements range from 18000 beats per hour to 28800 beats per hour for most movements. some go even higher. This means that it doesn't tick per second (as quartz movements do; quartz = with battery). This watch beats 8 times per second. Small detail, but incredibly dumb given the detail of the context. fun fact: some mechanical movements are actually designed to tick once per second and are called a deadbeat movement. These were, among others, made for doctors who had to measure heartbeats.

My favourite season would have to be 3. The way he comes back from being crushed by a skyscraper to then eventually defeating fisk against all the odds was incredibly satisfying to watch. As for the fight scene, the first that comes to mind is definitely the prison escape. The way they shot that with all the twists and turns to then him finally getting out and stumbling into the taxi was just great in every way.

Great video, you really broke down all his feats perfectly. I'd say even though he's supposed to have the strength and durability of a "normal human", it's interesting that he has gone blow for blow with kingpin (who was pretty amped up in Hawkeye) and Electra (who could toss Luke Cage around like nothing in Defenders). I'm really curious how they plan to scale him in the MCU, most likely he'll just be on par with Echo, Yelena, and Hawkeye.

My favorite season is 3. Matt is hit again and again, pushing him to desperation, but he still manages to triumph against setback after setback. Fisk is after him, the FBI, Bullseye, and he doesn't even have his full abilities at first or the support of his friends. And Fisk not only targets Daredevil, he puts Matt Murdock in the crosshairs as well. The best fight scene for me was his escape from the prison. That sequence was amazing!

My favorite fight scene is the bulletin massacre. Introduction of bullseye, Matt fighting in his classic outfit, how he feels out the ?Num-chuk? realizing he has an impersonator. The fighting was the best part though, you could tell Matt was quite a bit better of a CQC fighter but bullseye was so much better at throwing stuff and keeping Matt from throwing stuff that it overwhelmed him. Very intense and cool episode.

I think one thing thats rarely appreciated about Matt is his devout catholic beliefs. It drives his motivations, his hopes, his morals, and the friction it causes in his life makes for some compelling adult stories. Not to mention the stunning visual backdrop if the churchs iconigraphy. One of my favorite lines from season one: "Claire Temple : Okay, that right there? That's what I'm talking about. Okay, I find a guy in a dumpster who turns out to be some kind of blind vigilante who can do all this really weird shit like smell cologne through walls and sense whether someone's unconscious or faking it. I loved Daredevil as well and was initially excited about his return. However I no longer feel that way. The darker more violent aspects of the show thatmade it so great would need to be watered down for Disney. I think Moonknight will have a similar problem. I think you can have him as a guest on a show. Matt Murdock can act as a lawyer and maybe Daredevil runs down a clue.

Wow I had no idea Matt knew so many fighting styles and technique. This was really interesting to learn and see some of each style. I absolutely love Matt and even though he has some powers that seem super, he still is human and very much a man. I loved to see his stuggle with religion and faith since in a world where gods and myths exist its hard to ground the more human characters and I think the Daredevil show did such a good job with it. Another thing-it’s less of a different power and more of an application of his senses, but instead of only being really aware of what’s in front of him like a sighted person is with their field of vision, his awareness extends in all directions. This is incredibly useful in fights, as we see him dodge attacks from behind without turning around, and I think once or twice he throws out a few blows without turning towards his target. It also means that not only is he really good at sneaking up on people, but he himself is incredibly hard to sneak up on (Hand ninjas literally had to mask their own heartbeats to escape his detection, and even then he was eventually able to overcome that).

It'd be impossible to sneak up on Matt. Besides hearing, he can smell you, feel the temperature from you're body, taste your sweat in the air, feel your the oxygen leave your lungs, and even if you hold your breath Matt could probably still smell your breath from inside you body anyway. There are a bunch of ways he can "see" you. Even with his hearing he doesn't need to hear a heartbeat at all. He can hear your stomach digesting food, he can hear your blood flowing through your body, hear your bones moving and shifting when you move, hear your muscles stretching. Ninjas can be as quiet as they possibly can but EACH of Matt's senses can detect the smallest of things. A ninja will not be able to mask themselves from every sense.

Kinda feels like his sense are played down heavily here. You did justice to the "active abilities" that Daredevil has, where he has to concentrate to achieve the maximum from his senses, but the "passive abilities" that he is constantly exposed to are never really addressed. Matt may be able to hear across a busy city to pinpoint voices, but when he's not concentrating he can hear almost anything around him with a ~100m distance. Matt may be able to smell a city to pinpoint the exact origin of a takeaway, but when he's not concentrating he can smell someone multiple storeys away. Matt may be able to feel ink on a printed page, but when he's not concentrating he can feel many types of vibrations and air flows. His sense of taste is never really pushed with concentration, but I'd be willing to say that part of his search for the restaurant a takeaway came from was done using taste. Again, his abilities are rarely used independantly. They combine to give him a fine view of the world that is beyond the untrained human, and when he concentrates it is beyond what any human could achieve. He has trained himself to always have them on so that he doesn't even need to think about using his sense of smell like the rest of us usually have to, for example. He can also block out sensory input, as the sheer volume of a car engine when Daredevil listens into conversations at night would literally deafen him. It's for this reason that I'd say when he takes damage it's more comparable to punching a bruise than punching someone that can feel the tumblers in a safe with his fingetips; it's sensitive, not overwhelming. Finally, you completely forgot Radar Sense. Radar Sense is what seperates his senses from Stick's senses, and the hardest part of Daredevil's ability set to explain. It's a form of ESP, or Extra-Sensory Perception, that enables him to view the world in ways beyond human comprehension. In the real world, things like de javu and intuitive precognition can be examples of lower grade ESP. Without certainty, I would say that Daredevil's Radar Sense is the thing that tells him to actively use one of his senses at important moments. Of course, the classic version of Radar Sense involves Daredevil sending out weak radio waves that he could then intercept in a form of ecolocation, but Daredevil uses his senses unassisted for that in the MCU. I like my theory of what it does, as it's the only section of the show that can't be entirely explained - why it is that Matt Murdock occasionally becomes distracted by important events

The space between the ceiling and the floor which is us, readers, can be filled easily with logical projections and imaginations. Not to mention, it is displayed consistently throughout the series. There is no need to "do justice". Nobody will talk about how good you are at twiddling thumbs while you're already applauded for executing a perfect Sonata No. 5, that is not "injustice". 2. He does not train to have them "on" all the time, and neither do we normal humans have them "off". We have weaker and fewer receptors, he has more. That's all. And although he is more sensitive, it does not take a minute of google searching to understand only "stronger" sensory organs can receive and translate more signals. His resilience increases as well. In short, "hearing more" is not the equivalent of "hearing it louder", and certainly not "more vulnerable". Just take an hour, research into animals with far more developed senses than us, and take a look at the experiments. A trained dog can smell blood from a bleached carpet, doesn't mean going to a wet market would make it gag and suffocate. By extension of your logic, you can't explain why dogs would eat poop if the overwhelming and repulsive sensation is exaggerated a thousand times stronger. If you want an example you can comprehend, try this: wear tinted glasses, and then switch to shades. One filters, the other barricades and reflects light. As a result, the brightness doesn't change too much with tint, but with shades, the whole world gets alot darker. To Matt, we're the ones with the "tinted glasses". And he can "see a lot more on the spectrum". You misinterpret that as "shades". (I'm using a visual comparison to relate to the other senses, I'm not saying he can see.) 3. Radar sense is Matthew trying to explain superhuman echolocation combined with tactile sense and assisted by smell and taste. Even us normal humans have a "radar sense" of creatures in close proximity, we detect them via subliminal changes in immediate surrounding temperature, new smells, footsteps, shaking floorboards, etc. It is not a sixth sense, not an ESP. Normal blind humans with expertise in echolocation a.k.a Human Echolocators can "visualize" their environment, and it's described to be quite similar to 3D sonar imageries seen on watercrafts. They do so by clicking their tongue and hearing the sound waves bouncing back. Durham University has ongoing research and papers you can look into. That's the "radar sense" you tried to explain with almost mystical properties. You compensate, for your lack of understanding, with an energetic but unrealistic interpretation...let's do a bit of googling before posting theories, okay?

I isolated these two kinds of feats because the show makes an effort to clearly divide them. The easiest example is his hearing, such that he can hear most things within ~100m of himself at all times but can also concentrate to hear most things within ~2km, or equivalent to the size of Hell's Kitchen. If it were a 10% increase I wouldn't mention it, but - assuming I'm correct or near enough - that's a 19,900% increase. As to whether it's beyond normal human capabilities, most of what he does passively has been done by real people. Hearing heartbeats within ~100m may seem out of our grasp, but monks can train to unlock similar senses. "There is no need to "do justice"." If there was no need to do justice, you wouldn't have replied. I provided information in a similar format to what the video did and you responded in an attempt to correct me, so naturally that means I can do the same to the video. 2. Regarding the monks I talked about earlier on, they specifically train to turn their senses "on", or - more accurately - keep their subconscious focus on them at all times so that they can reap the reward of what appears to be heightened senses. In actuality, they have similar senses to me or you, they just have the appropriate training to use the information in more effective ways. This is a common practice for Daredevil in the comics, and his meditation style seen in the show displays no immediate difference. "..."hearing more" is not the equivalent of "hearing it louder"..." I humbly challenge you to tell me what "hearing more" is. You can't choose to place your senses in a location other than where the receptors are on your body, so everything he experiences will become weaker and weaker the further he is from an object. Another way of putting that is the closer an object is, the stronger it's sensory input will be. Our brains learn very quickly to filter out the noises our senses have access to that provide no significant advantage, such as white noise or repetitive noises. This can be trained and applied to standard hearing, and would be necessary to support the abilities of the aforementioned monks, never mind Daredevil. As towards your examples of animals doing or experiencing things that wouldn't make sense with their heightened senses, I extend the same answer. It's quite similar to noise-blindness; you could live in repulsive conditions for a long period of time without ever noticing it, which is likely enhanced by the powerful senses of a dog to become blinded to many common sensory inputs. Or the sensation is perceivied differently, but I can't say that for certain as I'm not a dog and haven't asked one. 3. "Even us normal humans have a "radar sense" of creatures in close proximity..." Humans have many more senses than we are lead to believe. The five basic senses are a starting point, and researchers have never found an exhaustive list of the number of senses humans can possess for many reasons. A reason I'd like to focus on is that many senses can be divided into a kind of "sub-sense". Our sense of touch is responsible for the experience you have talked about, as the hairs on our body notice a change in wind direction and appropriately gather that something has caused that. (I would guess that's a reason why a lot of people associate their necks as a source of fear, as our necks are often left uncovered whilst the rest of our body isn't. When we notice something, our necks almost always will feel it. Although here we have entered my "theorising out loud" territory.) This is not radar sense, this is perfectly natural. "That's the "radar sense" you tried to explain with almost mystical properties." I said, and quote - "the classic version of Radar Sense involves Daredevil sending out weak radio waves that he could then intercept in a form of echolocation". However, all of the unique inputs echolocation provides other animals are covered by Matt's other senses, so I don't think the writers would choose to waste it that way. Don't forget, this isn't real. It's fiction, and so the mystical properties can exist as much as they want to. The "theories" you have accused me with and implicitly insulted are self-professed - "my theory"! In the context of the Daredevil TV show, I think my theory has plenty of ground to stand on. As a footnote, your comment can be perceived as arrogant, belittling, and rude. I've provided what I believe to be fact in a factual manor, open to critique and never subjectively bullying the original content creator for what I believe to be facts that "are never really addressed". If you didn't intend to sound this way, I'd watch how you interact with others to prevent yourself from becoming unlikeable, but otherwise I can understand your passion. With all of his feats of recovery as well as heightened senses, I don't think Matt Murdock is still considered 'just a human being'. I mean, look what he endures and survives. The intro of season three sees him survive the pressure of a ground zero explosion, a concussion from a break moving at high speed, drowning in toxic city industrial sewage and then getting up and fighting a trained boxer within days. He's not invincible but also not a regular-degular human being, even for a New Yorker. Human mutate, yes.
